I love catfish. It is a wonderful fish, very tasty, and easy to grow. I love to fry it up, make it crunchy, breading it, seasoning it...drooling....
But there are many times that I find 'strands' located near the middle of a fillet of catfish, or near the backbone. I pull them, and they are rather elastic, tubular and white. I'm thinking worms. What do you think?
I have a cousin who is my fav relative, and she use to work in the Alaskan fisheries and canning houses. She told me they would get their knives ice cold and cut those fish up and stab the fillets with a super cold knife and the worms would wrap themselves around the tip of the cold knife. Consequently, she isn't into fish all that much. Most white flesh fish have tons of worms.
I'm having an EWW moment here. Is that what I think it is?

I only catch and release, so haven't cleaned a fish, but googling makes it sound like worms in catfish is not uncommon.

Makes me think about sushi now... Course that fish is of the highest caliber and it tends to be thin enough that the chef should be able to hold it up to light and see any worms or cysts in the flesh.
The worms are the same color as the meat which makes it really hard to see them. I would not be so EEEWWWWed over this if I could see a dark worm in the pink flesh prior to cooking like Helen did in the video.
I am more careful to flake the catfish apart after it's been cooked. Breaking the fish into bite size pieces lets me see the 'strands' and then I can use a paper towel (for a better grip) to pull on it gently to get the rest of the worm out in one piece. Most of them are really long. I never knife my fish for this reason. I don't want to cut the worm up into bite sized pieces because they are the same color as the flesh.

Absolutely NOT looking at that link!!! Another reason I can be glad that I cut fried foods out of my diet (the only way I could eat catfish and it is the only fish I used to eat.) *shudder*

I grew up eating catfish. Love it anyway its cooked! Even fileted it. I was always told those strands were nerve tissue and just pulled them out during fileting. If they are there after cooking, because they weren't removed, I just push them aside.
As far as the worm thing, all fish have worms, or so all the specials on TV say. They don't survive the acidic environment of the stomach and are destroyed on contact. I don't worry about since most of the shows I have seen show an endoscope showing the destruction on site!
Won't stop me eating fish. Just not sushi-I don't like raw fish!
