Hi all! My DS is getting braces tomorrow. For now, just on his two front teeth on top. So there will be the metal rings around his two back molars on top, and a wire going around to the brackets on his 2 front teeth. He just had 6 teeth pulled and will need 2 more pulled as well. He will eventually have a full set of braces on all teeth, headgear, possibly a bionator, jaw surgery, implants and a bunch of other stuff. It's going to be a journey He has a medical condition that effects his teeth- they are a bit sensitive, they are widely spaced, and conical shaped. He has 4 missing adult teeth. The adult teeth he does have are late to come in, and pointing every which way- erupting in the roof of his mouth and under his tongue, and going in wrong directions. He has a very extreme overbite and his bottom front teeth hit the roof of his mouth. He gets absolutely horrible canker sores! I feel so bad for him. The doctor and dentist just say he is prone to them, and that he needs to be careful not to bite his tongue, cheeks, and lips, because he will get sores that last for weeks. They are so painful looking! What can I do to help with this, now that he will have braces? I worried he will have sores constantly for the next decade! I know I can put wax on the brackets (I had braces and ortho work for 7 years myself... A long time ago!). Any other tricks to help him out? Thank you!

L-lysine vitamins. When I was a young teenager I got them all the time and taking l-lysine helped a lot. I have recently read that baking soda can contribute to canker sores and that makes a lot of sense as I used to brush my teeth with it to whiten them a lot during this time. So maybe try and avoid toothpaste with baking soda in it as well.

Do they use latex gloves? My niece had this problem when she got braces and they finally found she was allergic to the gloves they used. They switched gloves and she stopped having the sores from her monthly adjustments

There is a product called GlyOxide it is an oral rinse that can be used when there is some flair up as well as preventatively. I used it when I was under going chemo and it helped a ton. Also try the Biotene products. He may not produce enough saliva and that can be a canker sore cause.

My dentist recently prescribed Valtrex (valacyclovir) for treating recurrent canker sores. You treat at first sign. I think you can also take acyclovir (Zovirax) prophylacticly to prevent them. Might be worth asking your dentist about. Also some B-vitamins are thought to help prevent them. They are miserable - hope you can get some help for him.

I have been out of braces for more than 50 years, but that time there was a wax that I could put on the braces when there was a sore that would keep the braces from rubbing against that store. Do they still do this?

I have a prescription for Triamcinolone Acetonide dental paste which is very effective if applied at the first hint of a sore. Was prescribed by my PCP, so ask your pediatric Doctor or Orthodontist about it.

I had chronic canker sores for as long as I can remember. Under my tongue, roof of my mouth, throat and the usual places. Whet to doctors, dentists, imudematologists and just about anyone to find a way to control them. I was desperate, so painful and then there was the bonus of the swollen neck glands too.
Than I read something about supr B complex helping mouth cankers. I never believed in vitamins or supplements but figured what the heck. Well, it has been a miracle cure. I started taking them about five years ago and think I have had maybe one or two of cankers in that entire period of time. Again, I almost always had cankers and it has been so wonderful to not be faced with those nasty things.

B12 and Lysine are helpful. Canker sores are a fun symptom of my reactive arthritis ( similiar to rheumatoid arthritis) and eating a gluten free diet really helps me. Also, use lots of wax!

This is exactly me too, except I just started the B complex vitamins about 2 years ago and really nothing since. Really a miracle cure IMO.

Wow, thanks everyone! I will for sure be checking out all these options! I am a little surprised... We have complained to multiple doctors and his dentist and orthodontist about the canker sores, and NOBODY has ever suggested any of these. They have never said anything this helpful! Lol. A poster above also mentioned a possible cause being not enough saliva, and I think that may really contribute, in this case! With his medical condition, he does produce less saliva than normal. I am excited to have some options to try for him now!

My daughter will definitely need braces, and I worry about this. She went through about a year where it seemed like she constantly had canker sores, and it was so awful. We tried so many different things. We finally figured out that she doesn't get them (or at least much, much less) if she doesn't eat goldfish crackers. I imagine the irritation of braces will make it worse.

dental wax is GREAT-- USE it!!
I get canker sores (not nearly as often now as an adult, thank goodness) but Colgate also makes a Hydrogen Peroxide rinse that you can buy in the oral care section of most stores (walmart, target, etc). It's called Peroxyl, it's in a blue bottle, and the price is approx. $10 (but it's worth it).
ETA: right after the braces get put in, he will make a LOT of extra saliva-- I drooled a ton and finally asked the technician, what the heck?? She told me your body thinks the braces are something 'foreign' and it's trying to flush them out by making extra-- it will eventually even out, but he shouldn't be surprised if he's drooling for a while.

My son started using toothpaste without SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) and his canker sores went away and never came back.
His had been so bad and deep that the dentist had prescribed a steroid topical gel for them because they weren't healing.
Now he hasn't had them in 2 years. We just buy an SLS-free toothpaste at our drugstore.

full fat dairy products is what gave me canker sores, I always had bunches of them as a kid. also had bunches of ear infections.. finally when I was in my mid 20s and after fighting bad double ear infections for months the dr told me to stop drinkign milk.. havent had a ear infection since, didnt realize til months later that I also had not had any canker sores..
ds 18 gets multiple canker sores if he drinks whole milk.
so when I do buy milk its skim or 1%, as that doesn't bother either of us.

Definitely find a SLS free toothpaste. It can be hard to do since Rembrandt took their canker sore toothpaste off the market (LOVED THAT PRODUCT!) Sensodyne makes a nice one, you have to check the labels because not all of them are SLS free. I think it is Gentle White. It makes a HUGE difference for me & my 2 boys. Toms also has some, but we don't like the taste or feel of it.
