I have had this problem forEVER, so it's not about getting older, although is IS more often now! It started back in my mid-twenties when I was very fit and active, and a much lower weight than now. My family and friends have a joke about how fast I'll fall asleep after a movie starts -----whether in a theater or at home! It's MOSTLY movies more than TV shows----no matter HOW awesome and/or exciting, it doesn't matter! The ONLY thing I can figure out is that I'm usually a huge multi-tasker, so when I sit in a comfy chair and REALLLY focus on the movie, my brain gets SO relaxed, it wants to sleep! Ugh, I have missed SO many great movies/ shows!! Thank goodness for DVRs, Netflix, Apple TV, etc. I'll go back and watch what I missed later, but more often, I'll just ask " how did it END ???I HAVE to know!!!" DH used to get a bit annoyed, but he's cooler about it now.....even the times I start snoring in theaters.....embarrassing!!! LOL! ... but he just gently nudges me. How about you?

This is one of several reasons why I watch hardly any TV.
Dh and I are watching Outlander (currently the only show that I watch). On Saturday we tried to catch up by watching two episodes. I dozed off during most of the second one ("The Fox's Lair"). What I did see.. I felt it was one of the more boring episodes, but that's not entirely fair because of how much I dozed off. I need to watch it again.

I do it, and I finally figured out why.
I grew up in a really small house. My bedroom was next to the living room where the only TV in the house was. I could hear the TV through the walls and I grew up going to sleep to the sound of the news and The Tonight Show. Still to this day, I sleep best when the television is on (the flashing light of the television bothers DH, so I use headphones at night and stream either TV shows or podcasts all night long. And I'm asleep in seconds) I have to be careful what channel is on because certain things, like infomercials, find their way into my dreams. Oddly enough, Forensic Files is my favorite. The narrator has a soothing, calming, and even voice. It's not so much about the content as it is about the pace and tone of the voices.

I fall asleep more often than not during tv shows and movies. I think it has more to do with the fact that I'm sitting down and relaxing than anything else. I've even fallen asleep in the theater.

Nope, I have to be dog ass tired to fall asleep in front of the tv. I'd rather just go to bed if I start feeling sleepy. The few times I have fallen asleep on the couch, I wake up with my neck hurting. LOL

I do it constantly. As soon as I sit down I set the DVR to record anything I want to watch. That way I can catch up later without the annoying commercials. I blame it on the fact that I'm most mornings by 5:30 so by the time something good comes on I'm beat, has nothing to do with the fact I'm old.

Our house is on he smaller side, and her room is next to the living room and just a few feet from the kitchen. Apparently we're just noisy in general--tv, talking, etc. A few years back when dh and I went away and my MIL stayed with the girls, she later told us that she couldn't sleep because it was too quiet! All of the regular comfortable background noise was just not there.

I don't do this any more, but it was a problem for me at one time. In my case, I learned I had apnea issues. I wasn't getting a proper rest during the night, no matter how long I slept. My body was constantly being disturbed by oxygen deprivation. One of the signs apnea is falling asleep in inappropriate conditions. Ask your husband if he has ever noticed you holding your breath at night and then suddenly gasping for air. I'm not saying that apnea is the only reason people fall asleep soon after sitting down to relax, but it is one symptom, and it could be quite serious if it is apnea, so it is worth paying attention to.

I quit going to movies. Yup...it's not worth the cost of a movie for me to sleep through it. If I want to watch one I'll Netflix it or check Redbox. TV.....at times I've used the dvr at others I just figure it isn't that important and fall asleep. Ya, I'm just a blast to watch tv with!

I have what I call "movie narcolepsy" and I've had it all my life! I can stay awake in a theater, but at home all bets are off. I used to have apnea, so that is an interesting theory Lexica. My dr. said I no longer need a cpap after losing a lot of weight. I wonder what would happen if I try using my cpap again?

I always fall asleep at home during movies and tv. But I wake up at 5 am and work a job where I'm standing at least 50% of the time so I don't feel bad about it.

I've been doing the same thing over the last year. But I think I have some health issues going on because this isn't normal for me at all. I have some appointments coming up this week. It's frustrating for sure because it used to be my DH that was always dozing off early.

Not TV for me, but I recently found out that Audible is not for me. It takes me forever to get through a book because I fall asleep and then have to figure out where I dozed off when I start over.

Not me but my DH does it. I also count the minutes, sometimes seconds before he starts snoring. He doesn't do it as often in the theater but does fall asleep there some too. At home, it always happens, then he'll jerk awake and want to know what he missed. It was annoying for me, but I've grown to laugh about it now. He's been doing it our entire 22 year marriage.

Did you have another sleep test before your doctor decided you no longer needed your CPAP? I'm just curious. Unfortunately, so many doctors still believe that apnea is strictly related to your weight. It isn't. A normal weight or even underweight person can have apnea. So can a child. There are so many people that are suffering from apnea and are undiagnosed because some doctors still don't know enough about it. When I was first diagnosed, I joined an apnea support group. One of the members was a young doctor. He was very athletic and certainly not overweight. He had just finished all of his medical education about 5 years prior to finally discovering he had apnea. Here he was, a doctor, and he never considered it as the cause for all of his recent issues. None of the doctors he saw recognized it either. I don't recall exactly how it was caught for him, but he was quite surprised an a bit angry that in all the years of training he had just undergone, apnea was not even discussed once. So that means that the majority of doctors out there are probably not as familiar with it or the causes as they should be. They still believe it is something only older men who are overweight can have. They don't even consider it for women or children. The doctor and a couple of other members of the group joined together and wrote a piece about apnea and how so many doctors are not educated in the proper diagnostic tools. It was really interesting to read it. I will see if I can find it and post a link in this thread. And if I were you, bbkeef, I would ask for another sleep test to be positive you are not still suffering from apnea. Perhaps not as severe as it once was because weight can be a factor for some people if they carry weight in the neck area that would put pressure on the throat when you lay down, thereby narrowing the airway. Especially since untreated apnea can kill you. But not everyone is like that. Or maybe just try using your CPAP again and see if you feel more rested and can stay awake when you should. I didn't have any issues until I had my neck surgery. After that, I now have apnea and I also have difficulty swallowing and gag on foods if I don't drink water throughout a meal. My uneducated guess is perhaps scar tissue plays a part? I don't know. But at that time, I did not have a weight issue at all. If anything, I was underweight. (oh, for that issue now!) SaveSave

Lexica all this is very interesting. I was not tested again after losing all the weight. I might just try using my cpap for a couple weeks and see how I feel. I know I don't feel like I used to when I was first diagnosed. I was literally a zombie most of the time. I usually feel rested, but I don't think it can hurt me to use my cpap. My DH says I still snore, albeit lightly.

That's my hubby. I tell him to sit up and watch tv. It's easier to fall asleep when you are laying down on the couch then sitting up. I could fall asleep if I was laying down and it was close to bedtime. But I'm sitting up and usually on my phone, laptop or crocheting so it's not too easy to fall asleep.

That's me. I have always been this way. I always fall asleep especially during movies. And audio books. If I can't sleep I put in my headphones and put on an audio book. Out in 5 minutes or less!

Not in theaters, but when I am watching TV in bed at night I fall asleep in the middle of the show. For anything I really want to see I make sure to set the DVR. This way I can watch the rest the next day!

I fell asleep during Avatar, American Sniper, Saving Private Ryan, Titanic, AND Congo (remember that one?) in the theater. If I'm not laughing in, I'm snoozing. There are more, but those are the ones I typically get razzed for.
I don't seem to have the same problem at home. If I get sleepy there, I go to bed.

That was all very interesting, Lexica !!! burningfeather -----your post was also interesting, too! I remember ALWAYS falling asleep on my Dad's shoulder while watching TV as a child---maybe my brain just LIKES to sleep during TV! And what you said about having it on to sleep---I have several friends who are the same way---they keep it on ALL NIGHT and they say it really helps them sleep. There are times when I'm half asleep and DH watches something and it keeps me AWAKE and is annoying to me! LOL, I'm just a mess! Can't stay awake when I WANT to watch something, then DH's shows keep me up......UGH! We don't keep it on, and many nights, I am SO happy when he finally turns it OFF (I need to get some of those noise-cancelling headphones!!!) We DO have a lovely noise machine that sounds like the ocean, though----verrry soothing!!! It goes on as SOON as he shuts off his annoying shows! Also, what you said about the guy who narrates "Forensic Files"....YES!!!! His voice is SO soothing, and also so distinct, and I know I've heard him narrate LOTS of shows through the years. I was recently watching "FF" and I just HAD to know what he looked like! His photo was surprizing to me, I always imagined his face would be c ompletely different ! Whoever asked----No kidney problems or diabetes, but I DO have sleep apnea, (only diagnosed last year) and have a wonderful bi-pap machine now , so I doubt it's that. And mayyyybe I had apnea wayyyy back when this started, of course I'll never know. I always worked on my feet anywhere from 8-16 hours per day, but falling asleep during movies happened no matter how rested I was or not, and even on vacation when I'd had PLENTY of sleep.....I think TV/ movies just relaxxx me too much, but who knows? LOL! Oh, and don't get me started on falling asleep while reading ----I HATE that! But I know it's because if I'm in my comfy bed with lotsa pillows, it's sooo relaxing, it's just inevitable!!! Once in a great while, I can FORCE myself to stay awake if the book is SOOO good, I just don't wanna nod off!
