My son is driving from Arizona to Salt Lake City this week. He has asked me to help find him a hotel but I have no idea what area would be best. He would like something that isn't far off from the interstate. I know how helpful the refupeas are so I thought I would ask for some suggestions. Thanks in advance!!!

I have stayed at the Salt Lake City Hilton Garden Inn. I really like it. It is just off the 600 South off-ramp of I-15.

If he is just passing through, anywhere really would be fine. West Valley City isn't the best, but it is fine for a night. I stay at the Embassy Suites frequently, but that is because it is convenient for where I need to go and I like the extra space. There are also a bunch of Holiday Inn Express type places in WVC on the other side of the highway. I like Little America downtown, and they have free parking, but they are often sold out due to conference season. I only like their tower rooms. I've also stayed at the Marriott downtown which is close to Temple Square, but they don't have free parking.
How much does he want to spend and what does he want to do while here? I'd just look on Kayak based on his budget and go from there. SLC is a pretty small city so wherever he stays won't really throw him off course.
If he wants an interesting place to stay and is looking for more than just a place to lay his head, I'd look at airbnb downtown. Lots of cute places and close to walking around stuff to do.
If he wants a really nice experience, Park City is beautiful and very affordable this time of year. Rooms that are 400+ in the winter can be had for under 175 right now. I have stayed at the Waldorf, Hotel Park City, Marriott on Sidewinder, Doubletree, and the hotel across from Stein Erikson (drawing a blank on name) up there and all are nice. Some are valet only in PC.

AN I think he would really like Park City but his budget isn't able to handle anything more than about $110. He is only staying the night then heading to Montana.

We have stayed at the Hampton Inn and Suites near the airport Easy to get to, clean and breakfast included. There are eating establishments near by and shopping if he needs to pick something up literally across the street. My husband uses this hotel when he travels to SLC for business We were recently in Park City and stayed at at the Double Tree. There is a very good ( and not terribly expensive) restaurant across the street and a grocery store next door
