A group of friends are going for tapas soon. I've never had tapas. As I understand it is a sharing of "little plates" of 2 or 3 of the same sort of thing. Right?? Is there an etiquette as to sharing ... ordering ... paying for tapas?
Thanks

We usually just have everyone pick a couple of their favorites and then pass them around like appetizers. It can be helpful to ask the server how big some are, so you don't order something that has three pieces for your group of 5. At the end we split the check evenly.
Have fun...I love tapas.

Any etiquette is going to be unique to your group. Tapas aren't necessarily a *shared* plate. THink of it as an appetizer plate at a restaurant or bar. You may or may not share. That is all a tapas plate is... an appetizer or snack.
In my group we each pay for what we order and generally eat what we order. Occasionally one or more people in the group will order a plate specifically to share (which the person ordering pays for) and they make it clear it is a shared plate "here, pass this around you HAVE to try it!"

Oh, and we do a lot of "swapping" as in I'll trade one of my pot stickers for one of your ____ but it isn't a matter of just setting the plates in the middle of the table and people taking what they want without much thought of how much they may be consuming that someone else is paying for. There isn't anything wrong per say with either way.

We did a night at a tapas restaurant recently with friends. We passed the plates initially so everyone could try each dish. After that we did as you would do with any shared food -- offered, shared, negotiated, etc!
I love that concept for eating: little bites of a variety of foods.

We always just order a variety of things and share it all. I like to try unusual items myself.

There really no such thing as a tapas meal. The idea of tapas is a very small snack given free with your drink. There is a trend to make a meal of multiple plates, usually bigger than true tapas. I would think the best is to order what you fancy and pay for it!

To start, don't eat more than your share. After that, ask before eating more.

We ate at a tapas restaurant last week and the portions were way bigger than I had in the past.
We all shared family style but be prepared to be accommodating of specific tastes. There were 4 of us and one woman's husband ordered everything. He ordered octopus and she didn't take any. It was amazing and tapas are a great way to try new things.
I always love anything with stuffed dates.
One time, after much sangria, we used the paper table cloths to rate each small plate as it went around the table. Kept the conversion flowing.

My suggestions was to order more than you think you'll want since something might not be to your taste and the portions a small. Also love using the paper table cloth to rate the dishes! What a great and fun idea

It really depends on the group of friends. In one group of friends I go with, we all order 1 or 2, share all of them and split the bill.
In another group, some people may be picky and not want to try as many things, or they really really like something so they don't want to share, plus some drink & some don't, so we all order what sounds good to ourselves, each paying for her own order, but usually offer to share, knowing that you'll get to try some other things too.

As a vegetarian I hate sharing plates at tapas restaurants because the other diners have more food to eat then take part of my limited plates so I get even less food. If there's a popular veg dish that everyone wants, I tell them to order 2 of them, one of me and one for them.

Ask the waiter how many pieces on each plate before ordering for sure! DH and I have a tapas place that we love and honestly, I would never want to go there with anyone else and have to share the food! Many of the plates there only have 3-4 pieces. My favorite dish has only 3 pieces. DH and I each have one and since he knows it's my favorite, he lets me have the last one. But if we went with another couple, what would we do? Who doesn't get one? And ordering 2 of every plate would get awfully expensive really fast.

Every time I've eaten at a Tapas restaurant, I've left hungry and with a large bill. Those little plates add up. I would eat a large lunch that day and have fun with the girls sharing your plates.

If there's a popular veg dish that everyone wants, I tell them to order 2 of them, one of me and one for them. My father and BIL are vegetarians and we typically just let the restaurant know ahead of time and they bring a smaller vegetarian dish for them to share whenever the rest of us get something with meat.
