We will be driving through Indianapolis late this month. We just need a place to get off the highway, grab a decent dinner (with vegetarian options) and a good night's sleep. $100-150 range?

I'm not up on hotels around here, but I'm sure others are. But how are you coming through so others will know what to recommend? We're the Crossroads of America, I65, I70, US40, and I69 all go through us, just depends on the direction!

If you are on 70. I would suggest the Cambria in Plainfield off of 267. Easy on and off. Nice, clean, good area.
It is near the airport as well.

What part of Indianapolis will you be driving through?

Yeah, it will depend on what road you're driving on. I'd say pretty much any chain hotel (Hampton Inn is our favorite in that price range) would be good and available in that price range in the outskirts of town. Look in Plainfield on the west side and Fishers on the north.
Does that help?
(Indy native here. My mom actually lives just north of Fishers).

My brother is a long distance truck driver and he's recommending I take the "southern loop" around the city as well.

If you're traveling through Indy via I-70 I recommend the Greenfield exit (east of Indy). Safer small town with newer hotels & restaurants, or the Plainfield exit just west of Indy off I-70.

Right off of 70 and there are lots of resteraunts and an outdoor mall close.

Yes! The southern loop is easier traffic-wise, and there are more exits to the suburbs, which is where the overnight hotels are, as opposed to downtown with the JW Marriotts. You'll be on I-465 that way -- the Beech Grove/Emerson Avenue area is safe and clean. I wouldn't stay at the hotels on the US 31 exit -- they are pretty old and tend to attract people who attract trouble. Ditto double for SR 37/Harding Street exit -- it's a big truck stop area and it's the local place to go to score or buy a hooker. If you take I-65 down to the first exit, Southport Rd., you will find a nice collection of chain name hotels and some sit-down and fast-food restaurants all within walking distance of each other. Here's a list of exits -- the ones marked Indianapolis at the top of the chart, plus Speedway, are on the southern route. I-465

I'll second or third Plainfield. Safe area and new, that area has only been built up in the last ten years maybe. And a ton of restaurant choices.

Depending on time of day, taking I70 through downtown is not that bad (although I am not up on current construction projects). Going around 465 will add a significant amount of time IMO. Plus, on I70 you drive through the south side of downtown right up next to Lucas Oil Stadium which is pretty cool to see smack dab in the middle of downtown if that is something that interests you. Plainfield is a nice area and would probably have better dining options for someone who is vegetarian compared to the smaller outlying towns.

Honestly, even during rush hour, I'm not sure how much time it saves to take 465 instead of 70 anyway. It's a straight shot through as opposed to halfway around the city and both are going to be busy during rush hour.

I find that I-70 across isn't as big a traffic problem as other cities are used to, so I agree it can be more exciting and scenic of our downtown. The problem lies in where you stop. If you are looking for the Hampton Inns, Country Inn and Suites, Courtyard by Marriotts of the world at $100, you must know to stop in Plainfield and plan your timing the next morning to avoid rush hour if you don't want to sit in traffic at all, or push through to an eastside stop like Exit 96 at Mt. Comfort or beyond.
Neither route is wrong or anything. You just need information upfront.

And we also have to consider my brother's perspective as a truck driver. We're not driving a big rig, so it may be of little difference for us in a car.
Thanks again everyone!
