I had my first ever facial a few days ago. Everything was great, a couple products stung a bit when she applied it but she said that was normal for it to "tingle". But now my skin is SO FREAKING DRY! I would have thought that it would be soft and moisturized but it's dry as a bone, feels like sandpaper. Is this normal? Any suggestions to remedy? TIA!

I would guess that the tingle was a product with AHA and that can dry skin for sure. Definitely use something that is super hydrating, even healing, without any extra ingredients or fragrance. Depending on how it looks, I would probably use Aquaphor or coconut oil.

If she used any kind of light peel (which usually tingles), it will cause that. My esthetician calls it "frost," and it's when the top layer is getting ready to slough off. It's usually about 2-3 days after, and it only lasts a day or two. Exfoliate gently to help the process along.
ETA: I just googled to see if "frost" was a widely-used term, or just something she says. The stuff I pulled up is way more intense than what I've experienced. Mine just feels dry and rough, almost like the skin is thicker there. It's also fairly targeted; usually just on the apples of my cheeks and along the cheekbone, and sometimes on the bridge of my nose. It's definitely a normal part of a facial for me, and I get them once a month or so.

That has never happened to me, and I have rosacea and have to be really careful. My skin feels amazingly soft and moist after my facials. She always does an assessment of my skin and uses products accordingly for me. She also tells me what she is using so I can turn something down if I don't want it (for instance any peel of some sort). Maybe call and ask her about it.

My face peels after I get chemical peels. It's pretty ugly for a few days but after that then is when the soft skin come through. My lady also told me not to exfoliate for several days afterward.

If she was using a peel you should have been aware of it. Did she analyse your skin first? Is you skin normally sensitive? Did she question you about that?
I would call and ask about it.

I would call and find out what she used on you. That hasn't happened to me.

All I know from the only experience I have ever had with facials having never had one myself, is from my friend who owns a spa-like place. Her husband told me he never gets facials because it takes away the natural oils that are on your face. And I guess to him it's a good thing for those oils to be there. So maybe since it was your first time would mean to me that your face has been used to the natural oils it has.

Was it just a facial with steam and cleansing products, or did you also get a microderm? If the latter and sometimes even with a facial, you'll have peeling a couple of days afterward. She has stimulated your dermis (which produces collagen) and then this causes your epidermis (older skin) to peel and be replaced. You should be glowing in a couple of more days!

I just had one last Saturday. my skin was super dry in some patches until late yesterday. by then, the last of the dry skin had sloughed off and I'm back to normal. in the mean time I just used heavy moisturizers in those areas.
I've been told not to exfoliate for a days after a facial because it was done during the facial. further exfoliation could irritate the skin. just moisturize and use gentle cleansers the first few days.

It all really depends on what type of facial you had and which products were applied. There are many different types of facials to target different skins types and conditions. Usually there is a consultation with the esthetician before deciding which one will suit your skin and its needs best.
Personally I've never left a facial feeling the way you did. My skin always feels baby smooth and super moisturised.

So maybe since it was your first time would mean to me that your face has been used to the natural oils it has. Every time you wash with soap the natural oils are removed but only briefly. Does he never wash? The oil does protect the skin but it's also 'sticky' and attracts dirt, hence the need for proper cleansing.
