We are in the process of building a new house. I will have a dedicated room that I can have all for scrabooking and doing my school stuff (I'm a preschool teacher). This will be a pretty large room, maybe 13x14. We are going to put aside some money so that I can organize it and make it my dream workroom. I did have a room of my own in our current house but it was small and crowded. I will have a lot more room and a big walk in closet in the new house. But where do I start? I have no idea. I just want to get rid of all the plastic drawers and bins that I've been using and go with something more streamlined. Who wants to help me design my new scrapbook room? Ready, GO!

How lucky! I've had fairly large rooms in our last 2 houses but never the $$ to custom fit them with cabinetry, basically a lot of Michael's cubes Here is my Pinterestboard for craft room ideas if you would like to have a look. First time linking on this board so hopefully it works. link

I am about to move into a new room in our house (ds is leaving to college and we are swapping rooms since his is/was twice as big as mine.) I am looking at doing something like this... I don't want to use those cubes (Recollections or whatever they are) and will more likely put some cabinets/Ikea shelves in there.

Ok, I was just going through my old bookmarks and came across this one. So amazing! Scraproom
ETA: Oops, sorry! I didn't realize links aren't working anymore. If you look up Peamember: Jana Eubank, you can see it.

Nevermind. I forgot they're not letting us access the gallery anymore. Damn!

I can see the links to the Gallery, strange.
I'm getting ready to do my room too. I would love to do custom cabinetry but my bank acct said no so I'm looking at in stock cabinets at Lowes and then DH can modify them to fit my needs.
Check out Pintrest, lots of good ideas there.

I watched Brenda's studio tour on YT couple of years ago and was just as amazed the first time as I was when I just watched it again. Incredible....

Here is my room...I posted it to my blog and 2Peas a few weeks ago. Don't know if you saw it or not, but my room is 14x14 so about the same size you're planning. It's in the basement with an egress window and closet so we could easily turn it into a bedroom eventually. www.awdml.com/blog/?p=10326

Also look on Houzz for craft rooms and homeschool rooms. I've gotten lots of ideas from there. I'd love to do something more built in, especially since my scrap room is in what's supposed to be the formal dining room, which means it's a very visible space from the rest of our house. For now though, my plastic bins and Jetmax cubes are doing the job. I'm just glad I have a space all my own!
One thing you might give some thought to is if you like to stand or sit when you work. I prefer to stand, so I have a butcher block kitchen island I got at Big Lots and then an old kitchen table for when I want to sit or when the kids want to join me.

I've discovered that although I need to see my stuff, I don't care for a room full of shelves and/or cabinets. If I were building a home, and planning a huge walk in closet, I'd keep most of my supplies in my closet, but visible. Then my room would consist mainly of ample desk area and a work table, with some minimal shelves or cabinets. I like to plan my projects, gather my supplies, scrap and then put everything away. i already scrap like this, but it would be so much better if I was putting everything back into a closet and few cabinets rather than being completely surrounded by Expedits and three carts that serve as "stations." For instance, I like Organized Like Jen's home office (formerly her craft room). I could put everything I own in her closet, my die cutting machines on one of her deks and all the supplies for them in the drawers underneath, and her second desk would be for computer/printing photos, etc. Organized Like Jen Home OfficeOrganized Jen's Projectg Area VideoOrganized Like Jen's craft room closet
She has a lot of videos on her craft room/home office, but she kind of gets on my nerves after a bit, so I just posted the two that give you the gist of my idea of a great scrapbook room.

Builtins or cabinets are the way to go if you can afford it, otherwise Ikea shelves, etc are a good alternative. I'm holding out for the cabinets for mine, which unfortunately means I'm stuck waiting until some funds I've been waiting on come in. I'm sick of the plastic Iris carts and drawers that are hard to open and close, and the cheap laminated cubes that get dinged up more and more every time I vacuum.
Don't skimp on the lighting. That was the second thing I upgraded in my space after I painted. You can have the nicest room around but if the lighting is bad you won't want to spend any time in there. Have fun putting together your new space!

You all make me envious with all this talk and pictures of nice big spaces for crafting. We are a military family and moved from Florida to California last summer. I went from a 12x10 room that was pretty much just mine for crafting to a shared guest bedroom that is probably 10x10. My dream is to have a big room and fully furnish it with the Martha Stewart crafts furniture from Home Decorators in the Cement Gray color. I could buy the furniture now but there is nowhere to put it! I just hope it isn't discontinued before we move somewhere larger again.
In the meantime, I will just look at other people's spaces and be happy for y'all but also jealous.

Sherry, I always love seeing your room. One of my faves. Cmpeter, I like that room, too! It would be nice done with IKEA pieces.

I have also always liked Ali Edwards' space. She posted an update recently on her blog. Ali Edwards' office While she has way more product than I do, what I think I like about it is how it's divided up into zones...a computer work station, a station for die cutting and a big open place to work in the middle.

I desperately need to do something with my scrap room. It is a hot mess. I'm anxiously waiting for our Ikea to open up.

Ooh...so jealous! Our nearest IKEA is in Atlanta, so about two hours away. Buying anything involves a day trip and extra planning to be sure what you want is in stock and has all its parts! Check out the post to Ali's office above. She uses mostly IKEA pieces. I really like the table she uses for her work area. I think it's actually a kitchen island.

Another great place to look for modular furniture is The Container Store. They sell the Elfa line - it's pricey but is really nice.

My first post on our new board....just finding out how it works. Love the like button! Last week, I was adding one crate paper tablet to these shelves, and the whole thing came down! Talk about too much paper! Attachments:

Sherry, your room is so...me! If I had a spare room of that size, that is exactly how I would want it! What a happy place!

Seeing all these rooms makes me want to get in gear and paint my room. Our garage was converted to a room, (long before we bought it). I just haven't worked myself up to paint over all that WOOD PANELING! Ugh whoever invented wood paneling should be shot. It's a large room with lots of potential, but I half to split it with my husband, so whatever color theme I go with will need to match all his fire fighter stuff.

Beautiful rooms. As others have said, check out Pinterest and Houzz - great ideas on there. I did a mini-makeover of my room and got tables which actually fit all the way along one wall, so no wasted space. Makes such a difference. I think Ikea has some great desks and storage solutions.
