what kind of side dishes do you think would be good? We are having a bunch of people over on Father's Day and my husband wants to grill a turkey-if you have not done this yet, try it, it is amazing! I have some ideas, but wanted to see what others thought would be good. I don't want to make traditional holiday sides, something very summery!

For a potato, I would grill some wedges along with the turkey.

Grilled pineapple in place of cranberries.
Roasted/grilled asparagus in place of green bean casserole.
Sliced avocado (a forkful of turkey and avocado is sooooo good - match made in heaven).

I usually choose sweet potato over white potato any time of year, so I would choose those, but perhaps grilled instead of mashed with marshmellows, which seems to be the typical Thanksgiving for a lot of people.
Maybe a big green salad with some type of toasted nuts on it. I love lightly toasted pine nuts, but they cost an arm and a leg these days, but they are so good on a salad.
I would do a fruit salad or, don't freak here, a Jello salad of some type. My mom and my MIL always served different types of Jello salads in the summer and as unpopular as they are with most people, I LOVE them. Not a Jello salad from those older books with the bologna or eggs or weird stuff in them.
My MIL used to do a tangerine and pineapple Jello salad with cream cheese and orange sherbet in it. It was so good. My mom also did one that had cream cheese and whipped cream in it along with various fruits and some pecans bits. It was high calorie, I'm sure, but it was so good. Cold and fluffy. I think she used lemon Jello, but by the time the fruit/Jello part was set and the whipped cream was folded in, you couldn't see any Jello any longer. I think that was my favorite salad that my mom made. I know I requested it for my birthday almost every year. I probably made the rest of the family sick of it, but that was fine with me because that meant more for me! This was back in the days where I was chronically skinny and could eat stuff like that all day long and barely gain any weight. Now, I walk past the cream cheese in the grocery store and I think it jumps out and latches onto my thighs. Sigh.

I think it would be fun to do summer versions of the traditional dinner. Like the grilled sweet potatoes suggested earlier. You could also do sweet potato fries. Maybe an apple cranberry salad or a cranberry relish? potato salad instead of mashed. corn on the cob. etc.

Since you're grilling the protein, I would just go with regular side dishes that you would serve at a cook-out -- tangy black-eyed pea salad, corn on the cob, grilled zucchini/squash medley, that sort of thing. Just because the name of the poultry is turkey doesn't mean you have to go with Thanksgiving side dishes. Do what you like!

I would just do the traditional fixings. Comfort food is good in June too. Jen
