So, in the on going saga of the anxious household's car jinxing, the work truck borrowed from my parents wouldn't start this morning. No clicky, no lights, no nothing. I was standing in my driveway kicking the tire (because it was about 900 degrees with 500% humidity and the silly thing wouldn't even try to start) and two women happened to be walking by. Usually when Jehovah's Witnesses randomly show up at the door, we chat, I offer water and gently send them on their way. Today though, they asked if they could do anything and I laughed and said if they were able to jump start the car then sure. One of the women whips out her AAA card (I'm not a member) calls them and says 'they will be here shortly.' I stood there with my mouth hanging open like a dumbolina, and she pretty much shrugged her shoulders and said 'It's how I can help.' So the two women stood with me in the 900 degree heat with 500% humidity chatting until the AAA guy showed up. Then they told me to have a nice day and left. Not one word of proselytizing, no handouts, no nothing-they didn't even say which church they belonged to until I asked. All the did was act in the spirit in which they believed. So there is my cool deal for the day. Gotta say it warms my heart...more than the Central Florida heat already has. (Although, I did have to buy a new battery in the end. )

That really nice! It's good to know that they realized that being nice can be a better message than their magazines are.

That's nice. I'm not surprised though. While I don't share their beliefs, the SDAs I know are very kind and giving.

Many years ago when I was in undergrad, I lived alone in an off campus apartment in a really rough part of town (the pizza guy wouldn't deliver to my complex). One afternoon while I was in summer school there was a severe thunderstorm and the power went out all over town. I was dumb and unprepared and had neither candles nor flashlight. The JWs who also lived in my terrible apartment complex (I knew them because I had seen them biking around town) came to my door with a flashlight and candles and batteries because they saw me walk in alone in the dark. They had taken that opportunity to keep watch over the neighborhood and help out students who needed help. It was so nice of them and I think of that occasionally. They did not bring me tracts or magazines, just a flashlight. Good neighbors.

That's so nice! There were a couple of JW ladies who would periodically stop by just to visit (but not proselytize) with my mother before she passed. Mom was pretty much home bound the last 2 years and always enjoyed their visits. That's more than I can say for the rector of mom's church, who repeatedly said during the graveside service that she had never met my mom and didn't know her. It took all my willpower not to call her on it and say WTH not? She was one of your parishioners! That woman (rector) was a flake though and gave us great stories to tell in the coming years.

I applaud their kindness and generosity and am really glad you had such a great experience with them. People of all persuasions can and often are genuinely gracious and kind. Their cult still gives me the creeps though.

I had a friend who is very much an atheist, but for some reason this lds group keeps coming to her house to do chores for her. They never say anything about their missions or church. They have repainted her house, cleaned her yard, washed her cars. Washed her windows. Every type if chore you can imagine.
This gal and her family go out boating and leave the group to mow her lawn! She never pays them and barely speaks to them.
What gives?

Great story! Human kindness is a wonderful thing.
And - dumbolina? Love that word - I may use that in the future!

I've never found this denomination to be obnoxious even when handing out pamphlets, myself. They usually start with something friendly, hand me a tract and leave. No arguing, no endless questions, no superiority complex.

Your post warms my heart. But I guess 900 degree heat travels a" far piece."
