16yo DD is grounded for lying to us last weekend. As her 18yo sister told her--"Bad move girl." It's been extended by a week because she "forgot" and didn't come straight home from church youth group (we don't ground from church stuff). Tonight she begged to go to the lake with a friend and claimed its been two weeks already. I reminded her it's only been since last Friday. "Well, it feels like two!" I told her then it's working. She stormed off saying I have ruined her life and she hates me.
Yah, yah.

Yup - when "you are ruining my life" starts that means it's working!

Way to go mom, keep it up!
(and as a giggle, I would be tempted to make a paper chain for her to tear a link off every day so she can see how many days are left. LOL)

Funny thing is she's been out of the house plenty this week because she had signed up to volunteer to teach for VBS at church. She pulls a lot of drama but comes around once reason sets in. But the drama period is Oscar worthy.

Remind her YOU are not ruining her life. Actions have consequences.... she chose wrongly when choosing the action that led to being grounded. Choose wisely!

Yes, I always get a kick out of the whole "MOM, you are ruining my life" comments that my daughter loves to throw out sometimes. It reinforces my belief that I'd rather be her parent than her friend, at this stage in her life. She is turning 13 next month so I am sure I will hear it quite a few more times over the next few years. Melissa

Have you had the "None of my friends get grounded!!" accusation yet?

'Oh, I am ruining your life? If that means I am ruining a life where it's ok to lie to your parents/friends/siblings, I am ok with that. Oh, none of your friends are getting grounded? Well, they will keep living a life where lying to people is ok, and the real world is going to smack them in the face pretty hard when their parents aren't around to bail them out anymore. I will give you small consequences for your small infractions now, to better prepare you for the brutality of the real world. Because the real world is NOT just a reality show on MTV. And if it was it would be more like Naked and Scared.'
I have kids approaching puberty, I am rehearsing for the fights to come....

This lie was one that could have had serious implications. She is naive and was planning to meet an older young man while telling us she was at a girl friend's house. Her older sister found out and told me. I gave her the opportunity to tell me the truth, and she gave her tell while lying. She trusts everyone and had no clue how dangerous the situation could have been. We had a long talk about how she can't trust everyone. Why it's a red flag if you can't be truthful about seeing someone. And a million other things. I hated to punish her, because she's a sweet kid, just for her innocence.

Tell her she's lucky to have you for a mother because it would have been way more that 2 weeks for *that* particular lie here. It'd be hard to keep DH from locking the door and tossing the key! She's 19 now I I still have to back him down from the ledge when he want to dictate her life. That particular lie would have sent my DH over the edge when she was 16 and I'm not sure I could have mitigated anything. DH is not like me at all in the thought process of my daughters body is her own, he's a lot more medieval about that. So he'd have been keeping her home unless he went with her. Lol. This is why there is a burglar alarm on her window. So she ought to know there are way stricter oatents out there!

So dates would be necessary

Yeah, mine would just take the whole chain and put it thru the shredder in a fit of teen drama. So dates would be necessary Oh my!Well she's a mature calm collected young lady of 19 now so we made it thru, but from 13-17 'Oh my' would have been an understatement in the drama factor. She like her 'drama'. And she was a good kid I can only imagine those years if she were actually into bad things.
