...and 50 people coming to my house tomorrow for DD's graduation party.
We ordered a dishwasher two weeks ago and it finally showed up today. The other one was still working, but was on its last leg. Nevertheless, DH decided that he was going to install the new one at 10:00 tonight. But he's never installed a dishwasher before and didn't realize that you have to wire in the power cord and, oh yeah, he's not an electrician or a plumber. And water keeps dripping from somewhere, but who knows where.
So now both dishwashers are sitting in the middle of my kitchen and everything that used to be under the sink is also in the middle of the floor (because he had to access the water shut off).
Meanwhile, the kids are running around screaming like little girls, moving furniture, and trying to rescue a ginormous gecko that made its way into the house before the dog or cat eats it.
Did I mention the 50 people coming to my house tomorrow? And all the food I need to prepare? And my preference not to have my kitchen in a total state of disaster?
Update!
The new dishwasher is in (and it is sooooo quiet!), after a second trip to Lowe's. We owe BIL big time.
My kitchen is finally back together and I am working on food prep.
The gecko was successfully rescued and released to the front yard.
Now, if the rain will just stay away.
Update 2
The rain did not stay away. It started raining 5 minutes before the party was supposed to start and lasted for about 25 minutes--just long enough to thoroughly soak everything in the back yard and blow over half the stuff on the patio.
Fortunately, once it was done it was done, and family jumped right in and cleaned everything up. Even my littlest nephews were outside trying my patio chairs with towels.
Even so, all of the teenagers headed into the house to the game room. I don't know how many kids showed up, but literally every surface in the game room was covered in kids, packed in like sardines.
Overall it went well, after a bit of a rocky start.
Lessons learned:
1) Nobody cares about my cute Pinterest-inspired decorations but me. I need to put way less effort into decorating.
2) Teenagers will not eat antipasti skewers, no matter how many different ways you make them. They weren't huge with the adults, either. I have about a million left in my fridge.
3) Burgers and hot dogs went over well, but I always buy too much food. I have a ton of leftovers, but at least they will freeze.
4) White sangria went over well. There was none of that left. The kids liked the bottled IBC rootbeer. The tin buckets I bought to hold drinks looked cute, but the ice melted too fast and they didn't hold much. We eventually defaulted to the coolers.
