Why do people feel the need to repost or share horrible gruesome news stories?
I'm not being snarky. I don't see why anyone would want to spread horrible stories into other peoples lives. What does it accomplish?
Am I missing something?

Without knowing specifically what you're talking about, maybe they're doing it with the thought of "If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention" in mind.

Yesterday on my DHs feed someone shared a video of a person in a police interrogation room that used a gun to commit suicide. We didn't watch it, but why would anyone share that? Horrible.

Do you have the same complaint about people posting horrible news stories here?

A personal friend of mine is a Christian leader in Iraq and has been seriously affected by events there of late. He recently posted a very gruesome story from his location in which a family was martyred in a most horrible way due to their faith. It has been shared and reposted numerous times since then. I think it is because many people know that this is not a story that has been told in the news media and that it needs to be told. I needed to know it.
That's one example.
The gross stuff like car accidents and train crashes and that plane that got shot down and other stuff that gets covered in the news media ad nauseum - I don't know why people feel the need to share that stuff unless they have some reasonable commentary to offer. I really don't go in for sensationalism. Just not my style.

Some people are just 'into' tragedy, some people are just professional mourners. I'm not being snarky either, but it's been my experience that that's just how some people roll. I can't explain it, I don't know the workings of the minds of people who seem to thrive on bad news. But, I do try to avoid them.

I usually share things that I feel haven't been covered by the MSM and is something that needs to known. But I don't share horrific pictures or videos.

i hate when people share animal abuse stories. WTH? Yes, I am certainly against animal abuse and if I wasn't, seeing a gruesome story isn't going to change my mind.

I think it's just an awareness thing. "Oh my gosh I had no idea. Everyone should know about this!"

I hate the gruesome pics too. You can't unsee them and can cause nightmares.

Why do people race to post celebrity deaths?

Why do people race to post celebrity deaths? Not a bloody clue! Though if someone else didn't post it I likely wouldn't know about it. But then again I'm not hugely aware of many 'celebrities' anyway.

I think it's a power thing; "I knew about this first." I hate it, and I hate people who have to speculate about news stories too.
I have managed to edit a lot of my friends on FB through the things they've shared. You can definitely tell who has given some actual thought to the issue and who just clicks 'share' on everything.

What does it accomplish? Am I missing something? I get tired of reading these. I don't want to read something depressing every time I open facebook. The animal abuse ones are the ones I see most often. Ugh! They want to spread the news so people are aware and help animals find new homes. It's depressing to see every day. I have one facebook friend that shares everything she reads. I get tired of it taking up my feed.

My mother has shared things from our local news because for some reason, she doesn't believe that me, my cousin, my sister or anyone else pays attention to the local news

I go on Facebook to enjoy my friends and family. I live in Germany so I am not around them. However more and more I find the need to hide people. I am tired of the blanket statements of if you do not repost or agree with me, then you are not supportive of _______, you don't believe in _______ you are ignorant if you are not sharing or believe what I believe_____ and so on. I read the news I keep up to date with politics and world events, I do not need someone posting on FB what they think I should believe and know.
It can be unsettling and defeat the purpose of being there.
At least when things are shared here you can have the choice of opening or not!

If there's a specific type of story you don't want to see, there's a handy little browser plug-in called Rather. You can provide it keywords that you don't want to see in your feed and it'll replace them with something happier, like a picture of a kitten.

I'm just about to block a very sweet lady from my newsfeed because she will post 20-30 of these EVERY DAY. I click on each one and hit "block all from... (whatever the abuse site is)", but there are hundreds of FB pages. I don't want to miss her other posts, but picture after picture of sick and abused animals is really getting to me.

We were at the zoo this morning and outside the elephant exhibit there were posters about ivory poachers. Complete with gruesome pictures of dead elephants, elephants with the front of their head chopped off and bloody elephants laying in a big pile. I was like WTF? Families with young kids at the zoo know that poaching elephants is wrong and the people who need to be told this aren't going to be affected by the pictures any way. It was an awful display.

I think FB is our new 'over the garden fence' or shopping in the market or whatever - people used to physically get together and share exactly the same kind of stories/gossip/news. Now we are less geographically connected, we seek ways in which to have that same conversation. I think we are all basically not that far off our previous generations in respect of sharing the latest news, but do it in a different way. For some, they don't have someone next to them or next door to talk to and so share online. Welcome to the new world!! Same old crap, different delivery!

Yes, but we didn't draw pictures then either! lol It was "wow, did you hear about ______?" or did you know ______?" I think the constant showing of pictures/videos is taking the place of real communication. You know, the spoken word.

You mean when, not so long ago, people used to say 'Did you see that story in [insert newspaper of your choice]? I think what you are missing from my post, and what I also missed (dumb old me) is that the garden fence is far bigger than it used to be! For me, you will be unfriended faster for sharing those dumb old messages which are like the chain mails from yesteryear than for sharing what may be an uncomfortable but very pertinent, necessary piece of news. In my defence, I don't have 3000 FB friends, so am not inundated with stuff over and over again!

I have a close family member that does it all the time. I think in her own warped way she is using it to gather attention for herself. The worse the story is, the more she relishes in sharing it and shaming us all into to following suit. The joke's on her, I have hidden her because of this (and the fact that she's known to share 20+ stories at one time). You'd think she'd get the message since NO ONE comments on her shares, but apparently not.
