Older DD (age 15) and I leave for NYC in two weeks. We have tickets to Hamilton and are staying in an apartment in the West Village. We visited NYC a year and a half ago and did a lot of the typical tourist-y stuff like Times Square and the major museums, so are looking for a different experience this time.
1. What are some things we should definitely not miss in the village? DD loves shopping for funky/interesting/unusual/retro things, and we both love good food. But we're also unlikely to go any place where we have to wait in line for an hour or more to get food or be seated.
2. Would you say it's safe to take the subway from the theater back to the west 4th street station after the show? Or should I plan for a taxi or an uber?
Thanks!

I would walk the High Line and go to Chelsea Market. There is a restaurant in Chelsea Market that is good, but also a number of food stands that aren't sit down and you shouldn't have to wait long (the crepe place is a favorite ). I can't comment on the shopping, but we did this a few years ago and really enjoyed it (if you have time on Saturday and the weather is nice) - take the subway to Smorgasburg in Williamsburg, eat a lot of good food, take the East River Ferry down to the Brooklyn Bridge, and walk back to Manhattan over the Brooklyn Bridge.

Brooklyn Flea... I have never been but I have heard nice things about it. I cannot be on my feet too long, working on that Subway...safe. My 16 year old takes it to and from school daily. Nighttime is still fine. And I recommend Paul's Burgers... Lemme find the address...

The Strand bookstore in the East Village at E. 12th and Broadway? The Strand and Chelsea Market are two of the things that I was bummed we missed when we were there at Christmas.

131 Second Avenue
Best burgers in the city, in my opinion...

I've done two walking food tours in Chelsea / Greenwich Village area and loved them both. Great food, fun history tour. I highly recommend it. Foods of NY Tours - fabulous. Taking my daughter on one in December. They do sell out fast so I would get tickets ASAP.
I love the Staton Island ferry at sunset. Free, great views and photo ops.
The Morgan library also interesting. It's a few blocks from the NYC library on 5th Ave - also a must.
Have fun. Very jealous of Hamilton tickets.

Hmmm... I usually prefer just to wander. Maybe check out some restaurant suggestions on trip advisor to get the right mood/food type for your liking? Then book a reservation on Open Table, you can always cancel if it doesn't work into your plan.
I did do a food tour in Soho one time that was pretty cool, can't remember company, but there are lots now. It's where you go to different food establishments to try different specialties, and in between they also talked a lot about history. It was very educational.
Chelsea is the place for restaurants it seems. Hip, kitschy, theme type places.
Search consignment shops, I know there's a few in the East Village. And markets, not sure which days you will be there, I went to a vintage market in Hell's Kitchen on a Saturday.
Downtown has a totally different vibe from Mid-town, and I think you & your daughter will like it very much.
Subway is safe, but be alert and aware just like anywhere. I don't mind paying for uber/taxi to be a little more comfortable and see more sights from the car.
Enjoy your trip!

-Union Square. Great for people watching; often protestors. You'll walk there, but it's a subway hub. There's a farmer's market several days a week ("Greenmarket"?) and shops around the square. For bathroom or air conditioning, the adjacent Whole Foods has a huge eating area upstairs that overlooks the square.
-Strand Bookstore is between Union Square and Washington Square.
-Washington Square Park/NYU area. Street artists...chess players...there used to be a great Indian food cart at the south end of the square..
-Shops on 8th Street between Broadway and Sixth Avenue. Also lots of East Village shops farther east on 8th Street/St. Mark's.
-Go see the Neo-Futurists show in the East Village. Cheap and teens love it.
(I make an effort not to stay in Midtown; I much prefer the more residential neighborhoods. The subways from the theatre district to downtown are absolutely no problem at any time of day - and fast.)

Thank you guys! We actually did Chelsea Market and the High Line last time, but might go back because we were kind of rushed. We also went to the Strand Bookstore last time - it was our one quick trip downtown. I obviously have some looking and planning to do. We only have 2.5 days this time so want to make the most of them!

You get a nice history of the area as well as a chance to try 7 or so restaurants & bakeries. We were introduced to Cuba about 6 years ago through this tour and I love to see it is still going strong. Great food and atmosphere and it looks like you can make reservations.

It's REALLY difficult to get a taxi or Uber right after the show lets out. I generally walk a few blocks away from the madness and call an Uber. I don't feel unsafe on the Subway, I am just severely directionally challenged and worry about getting lost. If I am with dh or a co-worker, we take the subway.
Have you done the Tenament Musem? Very interesting and more interactive/tour like than a traditional museum.
I usually map out the areas I'll be in each day and multiple restaurant choices in each area. Then I'll use Open Table to check for spur of the moment reservations or pre-book.
Two of my very favorite restaurants are Distilled (love everything I have ever eaten here) and Boqueria (tapas).

I love all the book nerds on this thread. I loved the Strand. Maybe not quite as much as I loved Shakespeare and Co in Paris, but pretty close. I enjoy the Housing Works thrift shops. There is an East Village thrift as well, IIRC.

we didn't have trouble getting an uber right after seeing "Curious Incident"...it took maybe 10 minutes, but they can't do anything about the traffic. we were so happy to have seen an incredible play, all was wonderful!
