Don't panic! After the download is finished just decline the terms or service and they will put your previous OS back on your computer.
If you accepted the terms of service and it has been less than 30 days since they did it, you can still revert back.

Thank you for passing this along! My parents' computer updated and they don't want 10 on it. I was hoping there would be an easy fix.

I was surfing best buy and all of a sudden my computer screen went black and it said it was downloading windows 10 and NOT to turn off the computer!! So I thought about it for a couple seconds and shut it down, which did successfully stop the installation and then I googled a small freeware that sets it to never do that automatically again - panic time!! My dad's has done it automatically and it is past the 30 days. He hates it but cannot get the old one back. Declining the terms is probably better than shutting the computer off like it did - involuntary reaction

PSA: Check your windows updates and under optional updates (bottom of the list) is windows 10 and it's automatically checked. Right click on the update and it will be hid from your list of updates. I have also changed the settings on windows updates to notify me of updates before downloading. That way I know what I'm choosing to update and I check the optional updates just to make sure tricky Microsoft hasn't included it once again.

Yes, that happened to us. Somehow a little "update" got hit and there it was - Windows 10! I was able to reverse it and re-install our previous Windows. Seems like it took an hour or so.

Did you physically reinstall it yourself or allow Microsoft to reinstall it? My understanding is that they leave the previous OS on your computer so that it is easy for them to *put it back* for you. That's what happened to me. It took about 15 minutes for it to be reinstalled.

I have a Mac so I'm not involved in this, but I'm just curious to know what's wrong with Windows 10? I'm one who delays putting any update on my devices until it's been out for awhile, so that everyone else can work out the bugs. lol But Apple never -- at least not yet so far -- downloads things without asking first.

Many people have had trouble with Windows 10. Granted many people like it but those who don't have various reasons. Here are 10 reasons from Kim Komando: Windows 10 isn't a good OS for everyone. Here are 10 reasons you may want to wait to get Windows 10:
10. Drivers don't always work well for video, printers, and more, especially if they're not Microsoft products
9. Software compatibility issues for many non-Microsoft programs
8. Microsoft may remotely delete pirated software
7. Lockscreen ads
6. Microsoft doesn't sell competing brands in its online stores
5. Blue Screen of Death and other hard-to-understand error messages
4. Big catch - option to rollback to older Windows requires your computer to have 25 percent of unused capacity
3. A downside to automatic updates - could make system restore difficult
2. Murky pricing - Microsoft hasn't said how much it'll charge for Windows 10 in the future or for upgrades
1. Privacy hog - Windows 10 collects more data about you than any other OS in history

I've done that, unchecked Windows 10, but every time I go look again, it's checked. I haven't hid it - is that the secret to keeping it unchecked? I changed my settings earlier to notify me of updates.

But that's not quite the same thing, to me anyway. I mean, the U2 album didn't cause problems with the computers in the way it sounds like Windows 10 has done. But I suppose if someone didn't like U2.... lol

But I suppose if someone didn't like U2.... lol Apparently there were a LOT of people who didn't. I remember it causing quite a stink. But you are correct that it was not nearly as significant as changing an operating system.

marianne, since I have hid it (which is only this week), I haven't seen it return. I was having all sorts of problems with windows update for windows 7 but finally got it working and that windows 10 was a pain. But I just checked it again and it's not showing up in my updates anymore.

marianne I always check before doing the windows updates to see what it says it will update. I do not have it on automatic update.

Marina I don't have mine on automatic either... and will be checking more closely when it updates. Again, thanks for the info, it was very helpful. And thanks too, cadoodlebug for your helpful info.
