Okay, I tried MonoVision a few years ago. I never got used to it but we are trying it again. I have one contact in the left that gives me 20/20 distance. We tried to just fix both eyes with contacts for distance but I hated losing what little up close vision I had left at age 51. I couldn't even glance at my phone or FitBit without readers on. So, the doctor gave me a bit of close-up vision back in the right eye so I can at least see my phone, sign credit card slips, etc., without having to throw on readers but I am wondering how long it took you to get used to them. I think it's going to work this time but it's still weird. I am on day 3 of the trials. I feel like I am also thinking about it too much so my brain keeps thinking about it. I just need to let go and see if this works. LOL! Any words of encouragement for me?

Have you already tried multifocal contacts and not liked those? Those are what I wear and the eye doctor said the correction is more "seamless" for your brain. I had a mild headache for one day and that was about it.
Sorry I don't know anything about the kind you have.

actually, when I had monovision, I did not have any adjustment period. But, I belive it was because one eye is so much worse than the other eye and the doctor used that eye for the close up/reading RX. Sure wish I could do that now. But, it no longer worked for me when my age started affecting my vision.

I've had monovision my whole life, so I'm pretty used to it! My eyes never worked together, so my brain never learned how to integrate the info coming in from both at once. I have a "close up" eye and a "far away" eye and crap depth perception! Good luck! Dealing with new glasses/contacts is such a pain--but so is not being able to see!

Multifocal contacts are not made for those with astigmatism yet. My doc says I am the perfect candidate though for those once they are available. I also have a congenital eye problem in my right eye so things become a bit tricky. I hope this works because it is nice to see so "crisp" with my distance again.

I initially tried monovision contacts when I first started needing readers. What I found was my need wasn't strong enough so it was more bothersome than helpful. Fast forward 4 or 5 years and my need for readers became nearly constant for every situation except TV and driving, except I was even having trouble seeing the screen in my car.
I went back to the eye doctor and we tried monovision bifocal contact lenses and it was an immediately relief to be able to read without the readers. I did give up some distance but my brain was much more accepting this time.
It may be that you're just not far along in your sight's up-close deterioration that your brain will cooperate?
ETA: I have significant astigmatism and do just fine with my multi-focals

I never did get used to it. I really, really want contacts, but my vision was so bad with MonoVision, I gave up. My midrange vision was the only thing that was any good, distance and near was impossible. I have not tried the multi focal lenses. I have prisms in my glasses too and can't be done in contacts. Every time I go to the eye doctor I ask him if they have come up with contacts that would work for me.

Hmmm... I have astigmatism, and wore the multifocals for at least a year. Maybe my astigmatism is mild? I've just switched to monovision (last week), and so far it's been easy. I think it's because they were already doing it somewhat with my multifocal prescription. I just called today to see if they could tweak my far vision to a little stronger prescription.

I may also have a mild form of it. And multifocals sure don't correct my vision to the same crispness that my progressive glasses do, but they're pretty good. I'm starting to be annoyed at the tradeoff with distance vision and considering going back to regular contacts + readers for the days I don't want to wear my glasses. Anyway, age. Yay.

I am on day 8 of my trial (first-time contact wearer -- finally worked up the nerve to touch my eyeball eewwww). Same as you -- right eye for up close and left eye for distance. Still getting used to them. I know when I cover each eye, each prescription is doing its job. It's just a little tough with both eyes getting that inbetween vision. I'm going to keep going and hopefully it will get better and better. I do find that by the end of the day my eyes are tired, so I just switch out to glasses.

I've been in monovision for a little more than 2 years. The day I got them in the office was life changing for me! I never missed a beat. My doctor said its because I was determined! Ha! I've known people that it took a week to ten days to be comfortable.
I, too, have heavy astigmatism. I wear toric lenses, so multi-focal aren't available yet.
If you can press through. I think you'll love it.

I just had another visual field test and MRI to ensure nothing else was going on because I trip, fall, and have horrible headaches. I just went to multi focal contacts last Friday. I couldn't effectively see close up and distance was okay but faces were blurred. I tried readers but they were causing problems as well. Sigh, I am aging. The multis are thinner contacts and don't correct my astigmatism. However, not having to carry readers or "borrow" them in a store is nice. I truly wish I had lazik in my late twenties because I probably would be dealing with a better option than now. Instead I have several issues and they can't effectively correct with surgery. Bummer.

When I first had monovision years ago, it worked great - I adjusted after a day or so. Took me longer to get the hang of contacts themselves, lol. I went a few weeks for an exam (I knew I needed a new prescription) and am having Problems. The first two days, the contacts were great - but now nothing is really clear. Distance sucks, midrange is awful, close up is good, but I don't think it's normal to look at the computer screen 10 inches from your face! He's ordering me another pair to try - we'll see. I also have astigmatism, so that just adds another level of frustration.

Never did. Also couldn't wear the bifocal contact lens either. I went back to regular contacts with readers when I need to see up close.

I have a paralyzed nerve in my eye so that causes issues too. I will not give up; I will not give up; I will not give up. :;

I never could get used to monovision, but I love my multifocals. My eyes are very dry so I use the daily wear. Love putting in a fresh pair every day. They are a little pricey but so worth it to me. I do think maybe you are overthinking it. Just relax. Easier said than done, I know. I did find when I wore monovision that it was much easier when I wasn't constantly thinking about it.

It mostly bothers me on road trips with friends. I feel like I'm not a great driver, because I can't see the exit signs in time to quickly react; I can't read the GPS without readers, and even THEN, I get motion sick looking down. I'm mostly good for distributing snacks and comic relief.

My eye doc told me to try wearing one regular contact in my left eye and not using one in my right eye. When I have them both in, I need readers. I haven't done it yet because I don't want to deal with headaches. I have to try it but I keep putting it off. Right now I'm wearing my glasses (which I need for distance) but take them off while sitting at my desk.

Patter, which is your dominant eye? For most people, it's their right eye. Are you wearing the contact in your dominant eye?
I started wearing just one contact in my dominant (right) eye about six months ago and adjusted very quickly. Since we tend to favor our dominant eye anyway, that is the easiest one to adjust to.
I have multifocal but they didn't work well enough for me and I needed cheaters with the contacts anyway. With the mono vision, no cheaters needed.

I never got used to it. I had worn contacts for 30+ years and was really committed to giving the monovision a try. I gave it 2 years. I could see okay both close and far (although not as well as I had with regular contacts and readers), but would get headaches when I read or did close work for any extended amount of time.
I finally gave up and went back to regular contacts and readers. After I got to the point that I basically needed the readers most of the time (I was about 53) I switched to glasses with progressive lenses.

Yes, he has me in the dailies. They are so nice. Love being able to just take them out anywhere without worrying about a case and solution. Just chuck them in a garbage can. And I am definitely overthinking it. Gotta just "act normal" whatever that is. LOL!

I've been on the mono for about the past 3 years and I love it. Contact in the left, right eye naked. I think it took me about a week or so, maybe two..but I was determined. And it wasn't that bad, I was just *aware* of a difference. I don't need reading glass at all (will be 53 in a couple of weeks), I can read and see close up and mid range perfectly. I can see distance well by day. At night driving it's a different story though. I have to remember to bring my glasses because I just can't see well enough and its scary. One thing that cracks me up is when I chop onions now. One eye totally blurs and tears up like heck, and the other is all 'lalala..fumes can't get to me!". I say try to stick it out another week or so unless you really are dizzy or don't feel well, good luck!

oh yvonne, I will always need the reading glasses unless I really want to go crazy and not see distance at all out of my right eye. Oh dear. Glad it is working out so well for you! Maybe when I get used to this, I can then increase to something that helps me with up close even more.

It's taken about a week each time. She's had to tweak one contact a few times. The prescription will work for a while and then it needs adjusted.
I never adjusted to just wearing one contact though. The right contact is my normal prescription, and the left is different.

I just tried monovision for a week and hated it. I did that 2 weeks ago and last week was multifocal contacts. They seem to be better. The one eye for distance and one for reading drove me crazy!
