My daughter asked me today "Why do Americans pronounce it sug-jest?"
As in sug (rhymes with bug) jest
I told her that I'd never heard anyone pronounce it like that. She told me that she's heard it on TV and gave me a few examples. I still didn't believe her.... until she found this video:
WTH??? I've never noticed anyone pronouncing it sug-jest before.
The video gives 2 pronunciations. The "proper" pronunciation sug-jest and the "common" pronunciation suh-jest, which is the only way I've ever heard or noticed it pronounced.

That's weird! Dying to hear if our American friends really do say it like that. I can't remember hearing it like that on any American TV but who knows!

For me the g sound is not as hard as the g in bug, but is definitely not silent. Maybe more like suhgjest.

I've never noticed that about Americans either. I'm Canadian and pronounce su-jest similar to the word gesture.

So all those of you who pronounce the 'g' - had you noticed how other nationalities pronounced it differently to you? Because I've never heard it pronounced differently in any of the American tv we get here. Maybe it's just really subtle.

American who pronounces it Suh-jest.
But I used to rush through a lot of words. I had to break myself of saying I was from Kan City instead of kansas city.
Maybe it is a regional thing.

I have never heard or said sug jest in real life or on any tv shows. Chicago area American teacher. Thousands of students, parents and teachers, not one said it that way. Travelled a bit, as well. I have never heard it.
I had no idea it could be pronounced any way other than suh jest.
ETA. Listening to that video again, the way he says suh jest is too fast on the suh. I hear and say it with the longer first syllable but not a clear g. So sort of somewhere in between. And suggestion still no g.

Southerner here. I say Sug-jest. Not quite as hard as the g in bug, as someone said above. Not pronouncing a hard g sounds wrong to my ears. What about Suggestion? blue tulip answered, but what about the rest of you?
