I'm flying into DFW and then driving to a ranch in Johnson City for the weekend. I'll be spending the weekend with 20 women as a guest speaker/business coach. I don't think we're riding any animals, sessions in the house during the day and then there is a pool outside where i'm hoping to spend some time. I'd also like to spend some breakout session/one on one coaching times with the girls outside at the ranch, it looks gorgeous!
I've got bugspray and sunscreen and it looks like it's going to be hot. Is there anything i'll need specifically for Texas? Any critters I should be aware of before I go? I'm a little nervous! Anything fabulous in the area that I need to check out? I'm excited to check out the lone star state...it's been a minute!

well, it's hot as hell but you already know that. There are snakes, but they'll leave you alone if you leave them alone. Check out Pedernales Falls while you're there.

Waco is about halfway...lots to see/do there, especially if you watch Fixxer Upper.

Make sure your clothes are cotton or other natural fabrics. If you wear polyester or something of that non-breathable type, you will freaking melt. Too bad you aren't going to be in DFW for an extended time. We could all get together for lunch or dinner.

It's not just the heat, the humidity is insane. Like being smacked with a wet hot towel in the face the minute you step outside.

I know you know about the heat . . . but I'll mention again, THE HEAT. It is so humid here, which makes it seem so much hotter than it is, it is miserable to be outside at times. I suggest packing a swimsuit (although we noticed last weekend that the pool was not even a little refreshing and felt like lukewarm bathwater) and at least two outfits per day - because if you have to be outside for more than a couple of minutes you will be sweaty and want to change.
That said, Fredericksburg is about 30 minutes from Johnson City and if you are able to get over there, it is fun to walk around and shop. There are several German restaurants there, but our favorite is not German, it is Hondo's on Main. We were there last July on a Sunday night and there was live music and the food was amazing.

Yes! Make time to spend a few hours in Fredricksburg.
And it is hotter than hell...

Bring sunglasses and a hat or a cap for lying by the pool.

Yeah -- you said you know it is going to be not -- but I don't think you understand humidity... and heat. Bring something to pull your hair up OFF your neck ... wear big baggy sundresses so nothing touches your skin AND you can flap to get some air under there!

Welcome!
Ditto the suggestion for visiting Fredericksburg. My favorite tortilla soup ever is at Bejas Grill on Main St and we really like the food at Navajo Grill, and burgers at Rathskellar also on Main. It's hidden and is actually a cellar underneath a fabulous cooking store. Fredericksburg is known for peaches so try them in a dessert.
For shopping, I think there is a Lush Store, and if you feel like trying out a million types of hot sauces among other things and don't have germ issues then check out Rustling Rob's. For around the house items, I love Abella Homes and also the shop across the street from Bejas and next to Wheeler's (mentioned above) Phil Jackson's and just for fun Hip Dingo which is next door or a few doors down. If you don't have a James Avery Jewlery and like great quality sterling silver pieces, I can not recommend them highly enough and they are next to Bejas. They give me serious addiction issues. All of these stores and restaurants (except Navajo) are within a few blocks of each other on Main, along with most of the other restaurants I've seen listed in the thread.
If you're bored and don't mind a shortish road trip, and looking for excellent BBQ, I recommend Salt Lick in Dripping Springs.
Have a fun trip!
eta: and not to be crude, but if you will be outside for any amount of time, bring fresh panties to change into part way through the day. It's just that hot and humid.

Hot, hot, and more hot. Plan to spend the hottest parts of the day indoors, but it doesn't cool off a ton in the evening either! Have fun!

I'm excited to check out the lone star state...it's been a minute! Why are you flying into DFW and not Austin or San Antonio? That is going to be a four hour drive for you. Ugh. Take Hwy 281 down. It's a much nicer drive than IH35 and A LOT less stressful. Bring sunscreen. Lots of it. Wear tank tops and shorts/skirts and sandals if possible. Wear fabrics that are breathable and loose fitting (i.e. cotton). Bring your own water bottle or else you have to buy an entire case of the stuff to stay hydrated. Make sure you have water ready to go before you start driving. Pedernales State Park is right down the road. It's an awesome place to take a short walk to the falls and relax in the cool spring fed waters. Sometime the swimming pool water is like bath water when its this hot. The Salt Lick is in Driftwood (just in case you use Google Maps). Make sure you bring cash because they don't take credit cards. Sometimes their ATM works, other times it doesn't. Just be prepared. You might be able to catch the last blooms at the lavender farms in Blanco. Whatever you do, if you drive Hwy 281 from DFW to Johnson City you MUST MUST MUST stop in Marble Falls and grab coffee and pie at the Bluebonnet Cafe. It's a legend of a restaurant in Texas. As for critters, the snakes stay away from the paved and well used paths. If you start walking along trails where the grass is high you will want to keep your eyes and ears wide open. Seriously though, rattlesnakes are not that prevalent in the area. We are just hyper-vigilant about snakes in our area due to a lot of new construction. Welcome to Texas!!! If I think of anything else I'll come back and do a tag and post.

I forgot to mention the scorpions. We don't have them much where I live, but my mom lives near there in Fredericksburg and I see them at her house. BTW, I'm not sure why everyone loves FBG so much. I feel like it's more fun watching the grass grow LOL! Luckenbach is fun though.

Besides all that is mentioned above, I don't think I saw anyone mention the Winery's out that direction. I'm pretty sure there a few just down the road from Johnson City. They are fun and have decent wines.

Your hair is not big enough. Is it too late for a weave?

Hit Salt Lick for sure, cold beer, dress lightly like tank tops or something super breathable. Bluebonnet Bakery, plenty of water and we are a friendly bunch so you will fit right in! it is hot but we have so many great things to make up for it. We have a lot of great AC and you have short hair so that all helps!

My friend says she has to bring ziplock bags for her shoes when she visits because the scorpions will go in them and bite her. But it is possible my friend is a little nuts. I told her if it's THAT got there all the time why not just wear sandals. Lol

Forecast is mid-90's this weekend but it will easily feel about 5+ degrees warmer....yes, hot, but not completely miserable compared to late July/August standards!! Sunscreen, shades/hat and lots of water and you'll be good! Hope you enjoy your trip!

I'm flying into dfw to meet another team leader, we're planning tomorrow, packing up and then heading that way Friday morning. We have the ranch Friday to Sunday and then I'm flying out Monday. I don't mind the drive so much, maybe I'll see something cool. .
Y'all are freaking me out with the creepy crawly critters!
I'm working on planning a Texas tour,.not in the summer.... Getting together would be so fun!

Not to freak you out more, just check all clothes before putting them on. You are brave! I don't go near that part of the U.S. in summer.

If it makes you feel any better...
I've lived in Texas 44 of my 48 years. Born and raised. I've only seen two scorpions my entire life and both times were in a newly built home no more than 3 months after we moved in.
I'm serious about stopping in Marble Falls for coffee and pie. Their chocolate cream pie it to die for! Three years in a row made the 2.5 hour round trip to buy pies that I could take back to NE Texas for the holidays. They are that good.
