Our 20th anniversary is coming up and DH has promised me a three-stone ring. I would wear it in place of my wedding set and I like a total carat size (all three stones combined) of around 2.25.
I admit that I really want a sparkly ring, but cannot wrap my brain around what diamonds that size cost. DH and I have not looked together, but I know he would flip out if he saw prices around $12K, even if we could afford it. Personally, I would be highly uncomfortable wearing a ring that costs that much. I also have some ethical issues with diamond mining, so there's that.
I've seen moissanite rings that look like what I want, but are much more reasonable. My question is - is it as durable as diamonds? Does it retain its sparkle over years and decades? Should I look at another brand of stone instead?

My sister in law has one and it does look dull but I think she just needs to clean it. She's been married 6 years and it seems to be holding up well. She always comments how sparkly my wedding set it and I told her that I clean mine all the time. She then says..."Oh I never clean mine." So....I bet you would be safe! I agree with you too about the expense of diamonds....crazy! A friend of mine just got engaged and just her engagement ring was $40k!!!!!!!!!!! I cannot even imagine.

I am fairly certain that AN has a Moissanite ring instead of diamond and loves it. Hopefully the tag will bring her here.

My niece has one in place of a diamond and while it is pretty, it is definitely not as sparkly as a diamond. At first glance it is diamond like, but if holding up my solitaire engagement ring next to hers and I see it. For our 20th I got a 3 stone ring and had each diamond set with a circle of diamonds around it, My DH went to a local jeweler who designed it with him based on rings I pinned on a Pinterest board. It was under $8000 and is gorgeous. I can honestly say I get compliments on it ALL THE TIME and I haven't cleaned it at all in the year and a half I have been wearing it. I would start pinning rings and then go to a jeweler that is recommended to you. The ring was much less expensive than what we found in chain stores. After 20 years I wanted a ring that I LOVED and I do

Thanks elaine. I have a moissanite engagement ring (4 years daily wear) and wedding band (3 years daily wear). LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE. Absolutely NO regrets and so glad we made this decision. It looks awesome and when you put it next to my friends' super nice big diamonds, you just can't tell the difference. I'm talking about close friends who would totally tell me if they could tell a difference, and they all know it's moissanite. Mine is not "treated" or "enhanced" or any of those special upgrades I saw when I was researching them (again, 4+ years ago - a lot of those things were pretty new at the time). I will say that on a very overcast day where the sky is super gray, when outside in certain lights, it can get a slight green undertone. And you have to be really looking for it to see it. I don't think I've noticed it once since living in Texas, but I did notice it a few times living in Illinois. Mine is set in palladium, which is in the same family of metals as platinum. It wears like platinum (patina over time) but is lighter weight, similar to the weight of white gold. I'm glad I got the palladium so I don't have to have it redipped (my body chemistry seems to wear jewelry finishes pretty fast and I know I'd wear white gold down fast), but I will say when I had it polished, I was like OMG NEW RING it was so shiny. But that's true of platinum too. I had to have my rings sized once and made sure to let the jeweler know it was palladium/moissanite. No problem, although I will say he was a custom jeweler and I think I lucked out. As you probably all know about me, I did extensive, insane amounts of research. The stones are going to last forever, just as well as diamond. That isn't true with all types of diamond alternatives, but it is with moissanite. My ring was about 1/10th of the cost of what a comparable (quality, size, etc.) diamond set in white gold would have been. DH purchased from MoissaniteCo, and we did end up exchanging the band - he originally bought a "fitted" band that came as part of a set and would only look good with the engagement ring, and I wanted a little more bling that I could wear without the engagement ring, haha. They were great about the exchange. I do clean my rings regularly, which I would do whatever stone it was. I just keep a little pot of that jewelry cleaner stuff on my bathroom counter and drop it in maybe once a week or every other week when taking a shower. Cleaning makes a huge difference, no matter what kind of stone you have. There's a lot of snobbery out there about moissanite and alternative stones, but I can guarantee you no one has ever known the difference - although I'm happy to tell them. And I DO know the difference every day, and it makes me even happier with my rings. I think that is key - I've found that people who reallllllly wish they could get a diamond but "settle" for moissanite tend to be not as happy with it. People who like the background of moissanite, are happy they aren't getting a diamond, and really appreciate the savings tend to be thrilled. I'll see if I can find a pic to post. IIRC, I don't think they got a pic of my engagement ring with our wedding picture, just the band.

Okay, here are some pics - no closeup pics of the engagement ring from our wedding. The pic on my hand is from recent photos and the point of the photo wasn't the ring, I just snipped out the little part with my hand, so sorry about that. Then I just snapped a pic on my phone right now at my desk, inside in a room with medium natural light/no overhead light. You should see this thing in jewelry store style lights or elevators (everything looks amazing there). www.schubachjewelers.com/ was an amazing resource for lots of info on moissanite and custom jewelry back when I was looking. He had a great blog - blog.schubachstore.com/ - would have been cool to have him custom make something!! FWIW, DH's ring came from Amazon, it was $20 or $25. EXACT same ring, same material, everything as the $300 ring at the mall jewelry store. Exact. Haven't regretted that decision either (were quite pleased about it when he ended up needing a smaller size, and whatever the material is is impossible to size).

Look at the 100 facets diamonique on qvc...they are gorgeous. I have a 3 stone ring that is the epiphany,,,platinum over silver...after four years, its still great. It was less than $100. You could take the stones and set them in gold if you wanted to, i have a lot of really nice jewelry that is the real stuff and this holds its own.

I'm not familiar with the other one, so can't offer help there. But pawn shops often have diamond jewelry for very reasonable prices. You could have the stones remounted to suit yourself and sell the remaining gold to offset the price. Since it would be recycled diamonds, that might ease some of the ethical concerns too.
Either way, enjoy your new bling.
