is there some reason that thomas barely has a job to do anymore. did he do something that cause him to fall out of favor (besides just being thomas and being a turd all the time) that i am forgetting. carson is treating him like crap and i was wondering if something happened that i just don't remember?

I'm trying to remember, was it something to do with him being gay?

Robert once made a remark along the lines of "Who has an under-butler these days?" at one point. If I recall, as they tightened the reins on spending around the estate, they wanted to try to cut out that position, and so they had to start to work as if Thomas wouldn't be there in the future, therefore giving him less and less to do.

He was told to look for another job (as part of DA cutting staff to save money) and Carson is very out out that it is taking him so long to find another job.
I believe Carson wanted to let him go immediately, but Mary or Lord Grantham said he could stay until he found another job.

I'm not sure where you are so this may be a spoiler if you haven't finished season 6 - Yes, he went to be butler at the house of a very old lord and his wife. He was the only staff member. There wasn't much for him to do and he was lonely and bored.

Yes he did but it was for an old man and there wasn't a lot of staff or much going on. He missed Downton and came back.

Carson was never a Thomas Barrow fan. He knew Thomas was underhanded. Wasn't there something early on about him taking Carson's wallet? Later in Season 2, Thomas was made a manager of Downton's convalescent hospital for the Army and lorded it over Carson and the rest of the staff.
I think Carson's dislike of him was a culmination of all the crappy things Thomas did over the years. When it came time to downsize, Carson was more than happy to see Thomas go.

In Season 6 Thomas decided to "be nicer" and realized that most of the dislike he felt was not because he was gay, but because he was mean (reflection of current social mores). At the time Thomas decided to be nice and that Downton Abbey and everyone there had always extended him courtesy, Downton needs to downsize and Thomas is the obvious extraneous staff member. So Thomas covers his disappointment and unhappy in "pissy"; Carson doesn't mind that Thomas needs to go. Ultimately, Carson has his "issues" and Thomas, as a guest in the house for ... the wedding reception?? ... jumps in to be helpful and solves the problem of "what to do about Carson".
Happy Ending.

They needed to cut costs and they deemed Thomas the most dispensable since he had become the "under-butler." Plus no one really liked him upstairs or downstairs.

Yes, we just finished watching this season last week. It was a combination of finances and his clashes with the other staff. The family was actually pretty accepting of his being gay. And since Master George will one day be Lord Grantham, it bodes well for Thomas that George likes him so much.
