I am planning in going to PEI on an LM Montgomery/ Anne of Green Gables trip for my birthday and need some suggestions, information, help, tips, etc from anyone who has been. I live on the West Coast, so this is a big trip for me and I want to make it thorough! Is there a better time of year to go than others? If you have been, what were things you wouldn't miss? What are some things you felt weren't worth it? Any suggestions are much appreciated!

It's been more than 25 years since I've been. I enjoyed it. I was there in the summer. Nights brought a lot of mosquitos.

My daughter and I read the books together a few years ago then took a trip to PEI to do the same thing. We went to the Green Gables house and to LMM's childhood home (loved the property that was on). We really enjoyed watching the stage show in Charlottetown as well.
Enjoy! I love PEI.

I love Anne of Green Gables and watched the entire series on DVD! Hubby and I went on a New England/Quebec cruise in 2012 and one of the ports was PEI. Unfortunately, we were there for a short time and took a group tour with a private company. We had a full itinerary and we stopped at the Green Gables house and I was so disappointed we didn't have the time to go to the museum. I would love to go back to visit PEI!!!

Hello! I have lived in (on?) PEI for the last 25 years! When do you plan to come? PEI is VERY seasonal. A lot of places are only open until after the Labour Day weekend. You definitely have to go to the AofGG musical at the Confederation Centre in Charlottetown. It plays till Sept 24th. Even my rough and gruff husband liked it! AofGG- The MusicalThere are plenty of tours also. The beaches here are beautiful. Our favourite is Basin Head. It is on the eastern end, about 1 hour and 15 minutes from Charlottetown. Let me know what else I can help you with. Use Google and Trip Advisor too!

We went the end of June/early July several years ago. The weather was wonderful temperature wise. Everything was so very green and lush. Flowers were in bloom. It was so gorgeous!

I've never been, but enjoy! One of my favorite series, even as an adult.

I'm so jealous - PEI is one of the places I'd love to visit because I just loved the books growing up. I've been to Canada a few times but never made it there yet. Have a wonderful time!

Love PEI. Besides the Anne stuff, the beaches are beautiful. Go outside, walk and explore. Some cool lighthouses. Good golfing if you are into that. We did a lobster dinner and enjoyed that. What else - fun brewery tour in Charlottetown (sorry - can't remember the same) but it was attached to a pub and you went into the basement to see all the brewing. There is also a good Confederation museum - interactive and engaging. I love PEI. Lucky you to be going.

I went there in 1970 I think. We stayed at Cavendish Beach and had a lovely time. We went to the Green Gables house and one other (it was so long ago I don't remember that bit). I do remember eating lots of lobster! Would love to go back one day.

There are a lot of things around the island for LM Montgomery... but you need to realize before you go that LMM is NOT Anne and vice versa, so you will hear a completely different story about Montgomery's life versus the storyline of Anne. I've done a lot of research into LMM's life and I am often given "wtf" looks when I talk about how different things were (a lot of people assume that the Anne books are autobiographical... they are not).
At any of the Anne/LMM sites on the island, you can get a stamp book to document which ones you have visited.
For Anne, head to Green Gables in Cavendish. That is the old Campbell farm that was converted into a park (without telling LMM... it's interesting to hear her take on it in her journals) that was imagined into the house because of tourism.
Down the street is the foundations of her childhood home with her grandparents.
In New London, you can visit her birthplace. I buy a book every time I am on the Island because they stamp the book. This is a fascinating place. You can see her scrapbooks and some of her photography.
In Bideford, you can see one of the places she taught and boarded.
In Park Corner, you can see the Lake of Shining Waters, go on Matthew's Carriage Rides and more. This is the Anne of Green Gables museum.
In that area, there is a house that was her Grandfather's... the one that was a senator in the Canadian Parliament.
Of course, you have to enjoy the north shore to really understand LMM and her love of the island and the land itself. I spend an extraordinary amount of time on the shores... oddly enough, writing and doing photography.
In Charlottetown, you can enjoy the Anne of Green Gables musical.
I know I have missed some items. I haven't done the circuit in a while. When I go to the island I don't do the whole thing... just the parts relevant to my research. And the shore. I love the shore.
If you're into the movies and RTA, I know a few of the second camera locations that were used to enhance the final edit. The vast majority of the shows were shot in Toronto, but second camera got a lot of beauty shots and locators.
But as mentioned, many of these places are seasonal so make sure you check their status.
Mail me if you have any questions. I am glad to help. The Island is a very special place for me.
ETA: There are many non-Anne things to do on the island that I strongly suggest checking out. Doing the Tip to Tip tour (getting a certificate and ribbon for your effort). North Cape is western tip and one of my favourite places. There's also a rich Acadian history to explore among other many island centric things to explore.
ETA 2: As for time of year, I would suggest the last week of June or the first week of September (over the long weekend). For me, I have found that everything is open but the crowds are not thick. Well, other than the crazy bus tours but I've always been lucky in the sense that they are leaving when I arrive or arriving when I am leaving. I've done other times of the year and it was hit or miss for locations due to seasonality.

I think I will plan late June, as I am a teacher and need to be back on school by September. Glad to hear the weather is not too hot then, that is what I was trying to avoid!

It's been 20 years since I did this trip so my info is woefully out of date. We went in the summer and stayed at b&bs throughout Nova Scotia and PEI and it was a lovely experience from start to finish.

PEI doesn't really get that hot but bit can get crowded. You've got some great suggestions. I would also suggest you check out the beautiful beaches and coastline, do a lobster supper, shop for some local pottery (maybe even with red clay), perhaps check out a ceilidh. You'll have a wonderful time - I love PEI!

I went about 25 years ago. I took my younger sister on a camping visit since I was a poor grad student and my sister was a young teen. The beach where we camped was lovely. We saw some of the major sights, but mostly we walked along beaches and drove around the countryside.
One thing I was not fully prepared for was the long stretches of driving to get there -- it seemed like we drove for hours with minimal towns/services, and I hadn't planned all that well for the long road trip between Detroit and the ferry to get to the Islands. Those were the days before web info, when we relied on a AAA trip tick.

All of my books are packed away right now for the move so I can't go look and suggest anything other than get the new unabridged versions of her diaries. All the stuff that was taken out of the old journals (mostly because her son asked it to be removed because so many people were still alive) is back in now. It's a very different look at her. A more real look at her. Glad you've read about her. I met so many people in PEI who thought Anne was her autobiographical story, so I always caveat that when I suggest where to go. I'm going back to the Island in 2 weeks, if I don't remember to message you in three weeks, message me and I'll let you know what I found.

Thank you for all your tips and help! I will get the new versions of the journals. I figured some was left out of the final journal, but thought maybe her son had destroyed them because it showed his problems. I love reading her journals, but so wish she could have had the benefits of modern medicine as I think it is pretty clear she and her husband could have benefited from them. I am off to find the unabridged journals. Have a great trip!!!!
