My sister has had what we have called "chicken gullet" for as long as I can remember. When you swallow and the food gets stuck low, where you can breathe but you feel it and it hurts. Eventually, with movement, drinking or sometimes even vomiting, it will move down. Sometimes you can't swallow liquid past that point. My sister saw a doctor about it years back but never really got any diagnosis that I am aware of. My brothers have also had it happen on occasion (including a trip to the hospital after a particularly long episode) but once again, no real explanation as to WHY. (Bite size does not seem to be the problem.)
i ask because I am increasingly running into this issue myself. I was hoping perhaps someone here may have some experience or insight. Because of my other medical issues something newish makes me nervous but I am not sure yet if it is worth talking to the dr about, or even which one of my doctors I should see.

My 89 y/o mother recently had her esophagus stretched for something similar. Maybe you should inquire about that?

It could be a hiatal hernia.

I have sticking issues as does my Mum and brother. I have dilations but they don't really work anymore and I live mostly on liquids and some mushy foods.

I get food stuck lower down around my sternum area. It usually happens with dry food. Raw carrots and cold chicken are killers. Sometimes even hot chicken causes pain if it's too dry. I just avoid those foods that cause a problem.

Yes. I have a "narrowing of the esophagus". Mine is believed to be caused by a combination of reflux & allergies so I take an allergy med & anti-reflux med daily. I have a family member that has the exact same thing. He also has had is esophagus "stretched" a couple times.

I get it with bread. Like a dinner roll or bagel. Plain bread, not like in a sandwich. It's very strange and can take a while for it to finally pass, even with a lot of water. I've never thought to ask a Dr about it. I hope it doesn't turn into something serious for you OP.

My youngest DS gets that sometimes. His remedy is to drink something carbonated. Swears it works.

This is me to a tee. So weird. I suspect I have a hiatal hernia. My chiropractor one day took the palm of his hand and right below my sternum gave it a couple good wacks (on the top of his hand that was placed on my upper tummy). I tried it again later and I felt a shift. It's felt better since then. I make a point of not laying on my stomach to shoot photos anymore though, that seems to be when it hurts the worst.

I used to feel like food was stuck. Went in for Upper GI and to test, they gave me a calcium pill to swallow and then watched it. It really didn't get stuck as it went right down. Turns out, though I do have GERD and a sliding hiatal hernia. Meds have helped. Now dh has something called Jackhammer esophagus, which the esophagus has trouble pushing food down. It feels like a heart attack at it's worst.

Yes! I didn't start having this until after a surgery in my throat area. I figured it was scar tissue or something. The worst foods for me are chicken, rice, and bread. The pain is really intense. And drinking water doesn't necessarily work, it sometimes makes the pain worse and the food will not go down. When that happens, I know that water is coming right back up, and painfully too. I've tried just stopping eating at all and it doesn't take care of itself. I've tried sipping itty bitty teeny tiny bits of water and that is the only thing that seems to help, and it takes quite a while to do so. I haven't mentioned it to my doctor yet.

I keep having this happen as well. Although I feel like acid is coming up my throat. It gets kind of scary and I feel like I won't be able to breathe even though I can. Bread, chicken, and rice are the worst for me as well but it can happen with most anything. It used to be more spread out but now it happens all the time.

Agree with the majority of posters, it sounds like esophageal strictures. I have a severely ulcerated esophagus with scarring and strictures. When food gets stuck (and meat is the worst culprit, but bread and raw veggies can be bad as well) sometimes it will ease it's way down and sometimes (not often) I have to vomit. Mine was diagnosed with an endoscopy. I'm in need of the dilation/stretching that others talked about. But the doc can't do it until we heal the ulceration first.
I think mine is due to acid reflux. I also think there's a genetic factor--my dad and brother suffer from this as well.
