that I was NOT a scrapper when my kids were small! Birthday parties were stressful enough! I was usually up until some ungodly hour cleaning up the kitchen after my middle of the night cake baking and decorating. But thank goodness I didn't feel the pressure to do something like THIS ! Designer invitations? Backpack style goodie bags? Coordinated favors and activities and cute little signs and...

I was a scrapper when my kids were younger. I was one of those moms who gave goody bags full of candy and plastic crap! I also only did 2 whole parties for each of my older kids. I don't plan on doing any for my younger kid (special needs). I've always been a slacker. Probably why I'm a simple scrapper.

I think Pinterest has caused people to go way beyond what we used to do for parties of all sorts (not just birthdays). Not that I'm exempt. Love me some Pinterest party ideas. Hence the homemade wedding invitations and mixed media sign for the candy buffet at my wedding two years ago.

LOL, that does look like overkill! We just had our son's 1st birthday this year and after scouring online for party ideas I was blown away by how extravagant some children's parties were! It overwhelmed me until I told myself that is he ONLY ONE. He is not going to remember this and that spending crazy money and stressing myself if just not worth it. I wanted to enjoy the day! He loves dogs so we had a Puppy Paw-ty, lol. I downloaded a jpg invitation on Etsy and printed them myself (along with homemade envies). I ended up totally enjoying making all the banners, food tent cards, a dog house from a Uhaul shipping box and the food (minus the cake.) We kept it small and only invited family and had a light lunch. All of the food was 'dog-themed' and I used a simple plastic table cloth and newspapers under all the food to keep the theme. A couple of walking-dog balloons, regular balloons and plates/silverware and dog bowls from the dollar store. It was a fun day, we didn't go bankrupt (lol) and everyone (especially the birthday boy!) had a great time!

nicolep it doesn't look over the top at all! Very cute! I understand party planning and decorating are fun for some people, good for them! I'm the type that gets too much anxiety and can't wait for it to end.

nicolep those themed items look really cool, and the photos will be SO much fun to scrap! And I am assuming he will be playing with that cute dog house for awhile. Kudos! When my kids were kids, I invited people (usually by phone or in a quick part of a general conversation) and I baked and decorated a cake. And purchased wieners or made burger patties for a simple meal. And junk food & plastic toys for goodie bags.

My kids had big parties when they turned five, other than that, it was just our family going out to eat with maybe a friend or two for a sleepover. I did make a few decorations for graduation (banner and senior scrapbook), but knew they would all be tossed right after the party. Going to weddings anymore is a Pinterest extravaganza. I do like how cute things are. They just aren't very practical for me.
ETA: A dog themed party would be worth it! That is adorable.

Designer invitations? Backpack style goodie bags? Coordinated favors and activities and cute little signs and... But let's be truthful..... All that is for the birthday boy's mom to feel precious. No little boy gives a damn what shape his goody bag is made into. Birthday mom wants all the other mommies to fawn over her. "It must've taken you days to put all this together!"

nicolep: fabulous job! So cute! I was a scrapbooker by the time my oldest was 2 (he's almost 18), but there was NO PINTEREST! Very few blogs. There was no pressure to create invitations or hand-stamp placecards I was a rebel because I scrapped away from the CM style I did hand-make decor/game items - like I spent hours drawing/painting a huge Thomas (train) so we could play "pin the face on Thomas". We didn't have the money for purchased items, so I made my own!

Notwithstanding the fact that the original post was meant to sell something (paper products, a lifestyle, a "look"), the fact that the blog thought it was on-trend enough to post is.... troubling. Being a mother today is automatically enlisting you as a soldier in the mommy wars...

Could you imagine that kind of pressure for a guy?

Heh, the dog party would be too much effort for me. My son's 1st had cake and balloons, non helium. I taped them around the room. I did bake the cake, a 3D teddy bear cake. That was the first and last time I made that cake. I think I still have that cake pan 25 years later.

Thank you ladies! It was a fun afternoon and I loved seeing his face when he first saw the dog balloons especially. He started panting like our dog does, lol. And yes, he still plays in the doghouse.

Thank you ladies! It was a fun afternoon and I loved seeing his face when he first saw the dog balloons especially. He started panting like our dog does, lol. And yes, he still plays in the doghouse. I think it is the memories like these that are the best. My kids still talk about the cakes I made for them. And I did it all in the middle of the night so the birthday child could wake up to find the cake on the table. When a 30 something man still occasionally mentions a birthday cake he had as a kid, I guess it was worth a little sleep deprivation. I didn't do the star tip pretty cakes that were popular then. I guess I kind of scrapbooked with cake and icing, because I cut the cake into pieces and arranged them to represent some kind of scene or animal (still have patterns for a cat, a bunny, an elephant, a bear...), then decorated them with coloured buttercream icing. They weren't fancy. Two that my sons remember are a "mountain" made by having cake slab pieces cut into different sized triangles and stood on edge, and a "bull"--just the face and horns. And I made a castle (it involved ice cream cones) for one of dd's birthdays. Up until a couple of years ago, one of my niece's girls insisted that I make her bd cakes. Hers were a bit more stressful, because she requested specific motifs--a unicorn, a butterfly, a soccer ball (used a bowl to bake that one), a car, were some of them--and I was always worried I would disappoint her. But she seemed to like my creations!

I got the impression those items were "ideas" using a particular product and not an actual party. I could see using the invite but not the backpacks!
