This is his first full year in the program. (last year he was in marching band and did the underclassman show in February)
DS knows he's not a strong singer. This is the reason he selected this song...so he could be a character singing vs. being up there singing a serious song. I continue to remind him that he's never had a real chorus class...so I'm fairly confident that with a year or two of chorus under his belt, his voice will improve.
He's got stage presence...he's not afraid. He projects well...and he's pretty darn funny and got a great response from the audience. (and I made the sock puppet...I shed BLOOD for that sock puppet. I told him he needed to make a "number sign" that someone in a spelling bee would wear, but I guess he either didn't want to or forgot.
So here it is...from the musical "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" a shortened version of "I'm Not That Smart".
"I'm Not That Smart"
Edited to add some of my favorite performances of DD [HASH]1
"Gimme, Gimme"
"See I'm Smiling"
"Party Dress"

OK...gonna shamelessly bump this...it's been buried for hours and I'm not sure people routinely go back several pages to see what they missed earlier in the day.

You must be so proud... your children are both so talented. I agree with you about your son; he's got such stage presence. Fearless! And your daughter's voice is just beautiful. Are they aiming for careers in the theatre?

You must be so proud... your children are both so talented. I agree with you about your son; he's got such stage presence. Fearless! And your daughter's voice is just beautiful. Are they aiming for careers in the theatre? At one time, DD wanted to pursue a theatre degree in college, with the hopes and dreams of moving to NYC and getting a role. I encouraged her to pursue an education with a more practical degree, something that she could use to gain employment, knowing that in all reality, very few people end up performing on Broadway. While at college getting a practical degree, she could perform in college productions and still get her theatre "fix". Initially, she told me how horrible I was for crushing her dreams...but eventually came to realize that I was right. She is now in her 3rd year of a music degree major/vocal performance minor and in her 5th yr will become a Music Ed. degree. She did one musical at college in her freshman year, but has been so focused on classes and multiple performance groups...some which provide scholarship and grant money that she hasn't done another musical with the theatre dept. at the college.
I'm not sure what DS wants to pursue yet. (he'll be a sophomore next week) Just a short year ago he wanted to be a band teacher...but now that he's out of band...I'm pretty sure his area of interest and focus has changed. He is so knowledgeable about music...and has such a love of music I would not be surprised to see a similar education/career path.
Thank you, I am very proud.
