My junk drawer is an unorganized overflowing mess. I know as I move I will come upon countless items that would normally just be added to it. When we moved from our first place in OH to KY, I had a rubbermaid bin full of oddball unidentified and "junk" items. It went into a storage unit until we found an apartment, then got shoved in the back of a hall closet when we moved in, not to be discovered again until 4 years later when we moved into a house. Where it sat in the garage for at least another year before we bought garage shelving and spent several weekends organizing the garage. I will not buy bins to hold things I don't need when I move this time. I'm at a point in life where I will no longer be indecisive and procrastinate, holding onto useless baggage. Do you toss it all in the box and give it a new home in the new place? Dump it all in the trash? Take time to organize and purge? Other?

I don't have a junk drawer so I never have this problem What's the point of keeping junk? I'm asking this seriously, not to be snarky. I've never had a "junk drawer" so I don't really get why someone should choose to have one.

I go through everything. Trash what I don't need and keep everything else. My junk drawer seems to be mostly scissors, screwdrivers, pens and other random catch all things that never really have a home. It isn't organized perfectly but it can open and shut without any extra effort.

I also don't have a junk drawer, never have. I have a very small bin (maybe 4x6x2) to temporarily hold random small things. Having it be so small forces one to deal with it regularly.

My junk drawer wasn't full of junk, but rather a catch-all for items that didn't have anywhere else to go.
Assorted screw drivers that were often needed for electronics. Extra scissors that were used in the garden. Ball of string. Little bits and pieces of hardware that came off of things, were found under the couch, etc. Instruction manuals for kitchen appliances.
Batteries. A lot of batteries.
When we moved I cleared out the drawer and put like with like. Our new house didn't have room in the kitchen for an assorted drawer of stuff, so everything has been dispersed elsewhere in the house. We have a dresser for a TV stand right now, so the screwdrivers and batteries went in there, for example.

Take this time to purge. I keep my house relatively tidy - my junk drawer is utter chaos in a contained area. Some of my junk is too cool, comes in handy, brings back a memory.

I have a junk drawer and use it all the time. It has things in it like emergency candles and matches, a couple of balls of twine and string which only get used once or twice a year, the kitchen supply of band aids, and part packages of stupid things that come in packs of four but I only needed three. It also has a dish for things like odd screws that I find on the floor.
About once a year I go through it and if I don't know what it is or what it is for I throw it out. Sometimes I just move it to the garage in case it is something DH put in there for safe keeping.

I moved a few months ago and purged the junk drawer. Some of it like take-out menus, bread bag ties, mystery keys and such went into the trash. I moved the stuff like batteries, lint roller, rubber bands, hammer and tape measure to a drawer in the new house. I guess instead of calling it a junk drawer I should say it is a drawer for things you like to be kept handy. I don't feel like running to the workshop where all the other tools are kept to grab a tape measure and hammer when I want to hang a picture, etc.

I wish someone would ask my OH this as he seems to be taking over every available space for his "stuff". We just had a conversation (nagged) about this same sore subject today. Left to my own devices I am like oldcrow says above.

I probably open my so-called "junk" drawer several times a day. It holds all my small household tools like tape measures, a small hammer, screw drivers, pliers, exacto knife, utility knife, picture hanging things, brads, screws and nails, E-6000, floral tape, eye glass repair kit, etc., as well as various and sundry small items that don't seem to have a real home but may be useful from time to time. Couldn't function without my junk drawer. And I'm glad I don't have to go searching out in the garage every time I want to use any of those items.

Mine is currently full of things like cords that I don't know what they go to, random bits like curtain hardware, lots of screws and unidentified parts that I'm afraid may be on an important piece of something. STBX is a big part of the size of the collection, he leaves things laying around and if I don't know what it is, that's where it goes. I cleared all the markers and pens out a few days ago at least and put them in a jar. I may have to just set a small box aside for actual needed items like scissors, tape, etc since those sort of items end up scattered all over the house. I guess I can put screws, nails and useful things in jar and just toss the rest. Its things like random cords that cause me anxiety I will keep one forever because I'm afraid I'll someday find the electronic they match and be unable to use it.

The Junk drawer in my home is used by everyone. Lost something, look in the junk drawer. It's usually found.
We keep household tools in ours also. Just makes it easier when your looking for a screwdriver fast.
I clean out the drawer once a week or so. Usually when I'm looking for something.

When we listed our previous house, we went through ALL of the drawers that would be staying (bathroom, kitchen) and trashed most of it. Some stuff we kept or put in a better place. We knew buyers would be opening drawers and didn't want them to be full of random stuff.
I've taken it upon myself to go through it at each change of season to decide if the 5 screwdrivers that always end up in that drawer really belong in the garage or not, if that almost gone roll of tape should be tossed, etc.

I have 2 junk drawers...one is tool and handy stuff, screwdrivers, packing tape, batteries, pens, notepads, charging cords, etc.
The other is crayons, coloring books, coupons, gift cards, stickers, candy, birthday/greeting/sympathy cards, etc.
When either gets too full to easily close, the whole thing gets cleaned out. I could never just get rid of it though, because those are all necessary items. They have to go SOMEWHERE!

We organise and purge. This time was a bit rough though because we moved fast. I usually start doing that in the first week of notification along with deep cleaning.
