Hopefully your BIL will hire a competent exterminator and they will be gone by the time your party rolls around. I wouldn't move it to a hotel if I were you because lots of hotels already are dealing with bed bugs themselves.
Some companies offer bed bug insurance. They will come out to your house and have a bed bug dog search the residence. They certify it to be bed bug free and then for an annual fee, they will insure the home, meaning if you do get bed bugs, they will treat your home for free. You may want to look into that to see if it could be done before the party.
Otherwise, I would consider putting down some kind of blanket or towel on upholstered pieces of furniture that they might sit on. Once they leave, take them all off and throw them in the dryer for 45 minutes on a high setting.

We have bee victims of these nasty little things. We spent a lot of $$$ to get rid of them. It sent my emotional well being out of control. I couldn't sleep, I was paranoid and every itch I thought I was being attacked. Took a few years to get rid of. Not all heat and sprays work. We now have been bug free for almost two years. When we go away, we are diligent with our bags, they stay in the garage. We don't put anything on hotel floors, or keep the bags /clothing on beds. They stay on the luggage rack. Honestly the chances of someone walking in with a bug on their clothes is slim. If they have a coat...maybe just keep somewhere else, but again I doubt it would be there. Since we have had them and now gone, I am not as worried as I was before. Once we found what works to get rid of them, I have been feeling more at ease when traveling. The people you know, know they have the bugs. How about those that are too embarrassed to tell anyone? While we knew and we did all we could to treat bags, pillows etc...we didn't tell everyone. We treated /heated our stuff before we would stay anywhere. They feel bad enough, to ask them to bring clothes to wash and change will make them feel worse. I would be mortified, and possibly would not participate with that family in anything for a while. They didn't ask for it, and I am sure they would not want anyone else to get them.

yikes, that's a tricky one. I was that concerned, I would the party to an outside venue and have people stay at a hotel. I just wouldn't chance it.

So we have found an alternate venue..it's actually an outdoor pavilion, but then I don't have to worry about anything.
The only kicker is that it's $350. Bah. But it is what it is and best we could do last minute.

I am so sorry you went through this lancermom. Would you mind sharing what finally ended up working? We tried everything from heat to nasty chemicals. New mattresses, duck tape traps, baby powder traps. I know more about these bugs than I want to!! After I spent almost $5000 and I still had them I was about ready to burn the house down! I had to run an errand for work, stopped into Home Depot and saw a display of a product called Hot Shot. It came in a spray and bombs, so I thought $10 for two bombs I will try it. I bought three packages and a spray, we followed directions to a T. After first bombing I found one. After second...NONE! We did the treatment once a week for four weeks, every other for eight, then a couple times monthly. We use the spray on the outside of the bags when we travel, then spray the inside and out when back. They supposedly can live up to a year without feeding. We counted each month we went without a bite. Felt so good when we celebrated a year! When I told the big company the store product worked, he didn't believe me and said they would come back. My kids learned a huge lessen about hotels and cleanliness!!! We felt disgusting and like we were dirty, but after reading about them and hearing stories, we find it happens to more people than you think.

Thanks for the info lancermom. I am going to find a local source for that product just in case. I feel like it is just a matter of time before I bring them home from work. Dh also travels for work.

You need to gush on your MIL about this one, no matter what you decide. "Thank you MIL - you are so respectful, thoughtful, etc. I really appreciate your concern in this situation. You know it's awful because we want everyone to be here, but bed bugs are so insidious. I do so appreciate your understanding." blah blah blah.
I'm with the others in moving the site!
