So, I have 2 years to go, but I'm starting to think about this now because from ages birth - 6, we had a 35mm camera and I'm going to have to go through and scan all the ones that I need from those. I'm a slowpoke and don't want to wait until the last minute and then not have anything. So, which way do you think would be best / why? Thanks!
1. Scrapbook (1 book that chronicles just a few things from each year of graduate's life- about 20 pages total)
2. Poster boards with pictures on them hanging up here and there around the party area (misc. photos mixed together or grouped by event i.e. first days of school preschool - 12th, etc.
3. Some of those tri-fold boards (like kids use for science fairs) with pictures
4. Slide show

I just got done doing this at my DS's grad part in May and used large black frames with chicken wire (I got 4 of them at Hobby Lobby) and used clothes pins to hang up a variety of pics from his life (in quarters - first 4 years -second 4 years, etc.) I then had his senior picture and his cap and gown picture in big frames sitting on my entry way table.
On the opposite wall I had all years (including his preschool graduation pic) school pictures displayed in 5x7 frames. Everyone got a kick out of seeing him change and mature over the years.
Its a lot of work, but I got such great feedback, everyone loved looking at them.

We skipped the picture boards for ds' party, but at others I have seen a lot of the tri-fold boards, and the clothespins on chicken wire at a few. Paperboard, as well. The reasons we skipped them are that 1. at all the parties we have been to, only a few people glance at the pictures. They would rather see the grad in person. 2. Picture boards remind me of funerals. 3. We ran out of time and it was an overwhelming project that wasn't needed. 4. DS had tons of awards in academics and athletics throughout high school, so I had 2 tri-fold boards, plus the entire table in front of them covered with award certs, honor cords, medallions, and photo books from baseball. People did spend a lot of time looking at that stuff, and I think got a deeper appreciation for all ds has worked for and accomplished, and why we missed so many events throughout the years.

tbh - guests just take a cursory glance at them -
don't work really hard at it - some type of poster board is usually sufficient
unless it's a relative of mine i am not going to look thru a scrapbook or watch and entire slide show

I just saw one of the Pea's Pinterest boards and they had pinned this idea from a birthday party. Another cute idea. Pictures and balloons

I really like this idea. You could include birth photos and it's short, to the point and easier to look at than a big collage of pictures. IMO

I'm just here to say that I'm utterly and completely FASCINATED by how you all plan so far ahead. When I was planning my kids' graduation celebrations, i didn't get to this point until a couple of weeks before the party.
I suspect that if I were more like you, I would have avoided much stress in my life, as well as all those who have been frustrated with my inherent lack of planning.

A photo slide show loop on the TV. Multiple guests can view at once and it doesn't take up any table/surface space that is needed for food and drinks.

I like the idea of having pictures from the beginning of school to graduation. You could include birth and early years too if you wanted.
I will say that having too many pictures means they won't really get looked at. For a friend's daughter, they did a joint grad party with a good friend and they had pictures up all over the first floor of the house, hundreds of them. Neat in a way, but most people don't want to look at all of those.

Apple TV..... Scan your photos and put them into Photos. Make a slideshow and loop it on your tv. You won't have to do a thing but start it.
The slideshow can be made within Photos. Easy peasy......

If you scrap pages, I would not put them in an album. I have had problems with someone taking an album and monopolizing it through the event. They intend to look at it but keep getting distracted. I would put them on a trifold or poster boards.

I did something similar to kimpossible. I had frames made from a barn we had torn down. Each frame had a theme. Growing up, sports, marching band, friends/prom. I had tables set up in front of my porch. On the tables and railing I had about 4-5 select favorite 8x10 pictures in black frames. I had her first album out. And her marching band album. After the party I put the clipped pictures in an album and sent it with her to collage. I used our wii for the slideshow. I pulled out her albums and took pictures of the pictures. Kept them all the the SD card, slid into the wifi selected one of their music choices amd done! That took less than 30 minutes. I actually did it the night before. I had already tested it, so knew how it worked. It was just a matter of going through the albums. Afterwards I got a lot of comments that it was simple and not a lot. I have even loaned out the frames a few times! I don't look at every single picture, album or award. So I set it up that way.

I just did the kindergarten through high school pictures that you get from school. Matted them and put them on a piece of plywood. Covered the plywood with a table cloth. It was just enough!

I really like this idea. You could include birth photos and it's short, to the point and easier to look at than a big collage of pictures. IMO This is cute, and if you scrapbook and they were small enough you could put them on 12x12 pages and put them in a scrapbook after the party. I also like the idea of putting photos in a slideshow loop and playing it on the tv. Apple TV is an easy way to do it but I just got an inexpensive DVD player that has a USB input and will play JPEG photos too. Save photos onto a thumb drive, plug into the DVD player and hit play. Or burn them to a DVD and play it the traditional way.

I would much rather look at pic's of the graduate, then his awards?!
I put out just my reg scrapbooks thru the years. DD has her own. I had a cork bifold that I put her pins/awards/medals on, and then on the table we had pictures out for centerpieces, with the metal holders that hold pic's in a wooden block painted the school colors.

For my girls, I took a long rope and tied the school colors around it (you can buy the strips of material just made for this) and then put their school pictures from pre-K to 12. Everyone loved this and it was cute to see the progression all at once. I had their senior pictures on the wall and I put their baby pictures (they're twins) under it and in another room I had a digital frame going.
I would only do a slide show that was like a large digital camera. That's a great idea, but not making people look at it.

Which is fine, everyone has their own preferences. I know that I rarely see anyone look at the pictures, especially since the graduate is right there in front of them and then can look at the graduate! We don't regularly brag about all of ds' accomplishments, so the awards were a good way to let people have a visual of how much he has accomplished and how much hard work he has put into his accomplishments. At his party, a lot more people were checking out the awards than I have ever seen look at a picture board.
If you came to my party, you wouldn't look at the awards, and if I came to your party, I wouldn't look at the picture boards. All good!

The table I put together was a way for me to brag about my kid. I'm sure some people just look to be polite but I wanted him to have his moment. We had a trifold board with pictures from different activities (band, golf, science Olympiad) as well as some fun ones - like when he was little with his first best friend (his stuffed dog), vacations, fishing, prom, etc. We put out all his medals, award certificates, varsity letters, etc too. I also put out a book of all the 8x10 school pics (which didn't take me any time because that's how I store them). But the biggest hit on the table was the double frame with the first day of kindergarten and the very last day of school.

For DS, I had a banner similar to the one above with school pictures from preschool to graduation. Then I did a slide show and displayed some memorabilia. I plan to do the same for DD next year. I had the slide show playing on my Mac, which has a huge screen. I moved it to the formal living room and had it there with tables set up for eating and the memorabilia. I didn't put the slideshow up on the TV (with Apple TV) because I had the teens hanging out in the family room. But in hindsight, I could have done both, as many of the later photos were of DS and his friends.
Many people stopped to watch the slide show. I was actually kind of surprised, as I thought people would watch bits of it, but I had several stop on their way out to watch the entire show. It was about 15 minutes long and I was sure to include photos of people who I knew would be attending the party.
Be warned--it takes longer to scan photos than you think. I had about 6 years for DS on film. After sorting through photos (which were already sorted by year and event), scanning them, changing the date from the scanned date to the date the photo was taken, labeling the people in the photo and the event of the photo, it took me several months. I didn't work on it constantly, but I probably scanned about 300 photos (didn't use them all in the slideshow.) If I had left more time, I would have just scanned all my photos and had them all digital. But in the end, I probably have about 75% of the photos scanned that I would ever want. And they are all on the Cloud now if there is ever a fire. That gives me a lot of peace of mind!
