So our a/c broke down on July 4th. We were having a party and early in the day we noticed that the fan wouldn't blow the cool air. The unit itself was cooling the air but it wasn't blowing out. DH and his friend managed to poke around and figured out that they could hand crank the motor to get it to start. It would then work for anywhere between 15 and 90 minutes. Then required us to go down and hand crank it again. It's been 100 degrees nearly every day! We could keep the house about 78 or so by going down and hand cranking it 2 dozen times a day. Ugh!
Anyway, we kept getting put off by the repair guy for people who actually had no air due to how hot it was. He finally made it today. Turns out it was the capacitor for the blower motor. he said it is a really cheap part. So I asked what the bill would look like and he said he didn't know. The owner did the billing.
Just kind of wondering what to expect... He replaced the capacitor and filled it with one pound of freon. Honestly, I don't care how much it cost because it's worth every penny to have the a/c back in this heat!!!! We have never had to have a repairman out so I don't even have an idea of what to expect!! I did a google search of the actual part and it was selling between $9 and $20 online.

I had to have that fixed also...I believe it was less than $200 and well worth every stinking penny (that included a check of the entire unit and labor)

The part is cheap, the labor is where they get you. How long was he there?

OP, I don't know how much it will cost for your replacement capacitor, but whatever it is it'll be worth every cent! Save

The part is cheap, the labor is where they get you. How long was he there? Less than an hour. He kind of figured this was the problem based on our description over the phone. He pulled it our right away and tested it and confirmed it was bad in like the first 5 minutes he was there. I also wondered if there was some big markup on the actual part, like at the car dealership!

My new unit only needs to cool 1400 square feet. A unit with enough power to cool a larger house will cost more, even here.

A couple of years ago I had a part in my heater break. The part was $4. Between call out fees and labor charges I wound up with a bill for just shy of $200. So I'd expect at least that much for what you're describing.

Probably a few to several hundred dollars...we watched and learned when they came to replace the capacitor, and have since replaced two (multiple story house with multiple units). Pretty inexpensive part. The end is coming near though for the whole shebang, would love to get a new system for $4,000!

Just had the exact same part installed at my house. The total bill was $145. That's weird that he did the work & is going to bill you later. Around here, they expect to be paid immediately upon the completion of the work. Thank goodness for A/C!

We replaced the capacitor this week also. The part was $130.00. It was $85.00 for diagnostics. It needed four pounds of freon. Total bill was $480.00.

We had something similar last year and it was $140. The part was really cheap the rest was the service call. He even left the part so we could see it and replace it ourselves if it happened again.
