Hi I started a new job last week (yay) and I am constantly moving. The job is fun, but my feet are taking a beating. I am standing and moving so much more than my old job. I can wear whatever kind of shoes I want for work. They told me anything is fine and even running shoes as long as they are black or dark and all one colour.
I have some sandals that are memory foam and they are very good. They usually help my feet until 3 pm or so then my feet and legs are tired. I need another pair of shoes. I don't need to wear sandals when I am wearing pants. The weather has taken a turn for the worse and I can wear pants for the next few days. Should I go to the walking store or the running store to be fitted for shoes? I need good shoes as my mom had bad feet and I need to take care of my feet.
I am open to all opinions. Walmart is out of the question. I need better quality than that.
Thanks for your advice!

Hi Elannah, Do you have Naturalizer shoes in Canada? They have come a long way from what we used to call "ugly dog shoes" and are built for comfort, including hard to fit sizes like very narrow or very wide. I used to wear them back in the day when I waitressed. My mom was a manager for them for many years. What's your new job? Best of luck! Tracy

A running shoe store will fit you with shoes that are perfectly fitted for your foot shape and gait, but running shoes are not built for lateral movement. You would destroy an expensive pair pretty quickly. But maybe they have other options there, too. A cross trainer would probably be best if you're up and down and side to side all day. New Balance has some good options, but I think you need to know more about your foot shape (high arches, flat footed, proper size and width) to make a good choice on the first try.
Signed, someone with terrible feet!

Signed, someone with terrible feet! I don't want to get terrible feet so this is why I am asking. I do replace my running shoes often maybe more often than I need to. I don't want to get bad feet. The running store sells new balance. There is a good running store near my house, too. They know their shoes really well. I think I will have better luck getting fitted there than I will at say SportCheck or Champ's that just have teenagers working there. The walking store might have something good, too. Cross trainer might be what I need, though. I will go take a look. Thanks for the advice.

I was just talking today to my hairdresser about shoes. She says that she can only wear athletic shoes for a certain number of hours before her feet are killing her. If she's going to have a really long day, the only shoes that work for her are her Danskos.
She stands more than she walks, but there are some shoes made more for moving around. You might find that you need something other than a running, walking or even cross training shoe. If you have a Walking Company store you might want to try there.

You may want to look at Sketchers. They keep my feet from hurting when I'm on them all day.

I am a HUGE fan of Doc Martens! I LOVE LOVE LOVE my 8 eyelet soft leather boots! If you get them, make sure to get the SOFT leather, not the hard leather. I have a pair of red hard leather boots and I cannot get them to soften up enough to wear. the ones I love are 1460 Nappa. They're buttery soft leather and AMAZING. I need to get a new pair since I have completely destroyed both of the pairs that I have had for the past 20 years. www.drmartens.com/us/p/originals-boots-nappa-1460-w

I second the Danskos. When I was working retail and started walking all over the store all the time, I had to buy better shoes. I went to a walking store, and they were totally worth it.

Propet walkers are fabulous for walking, standing in all day! I wear them all the time. I am in my 7th pair so I guess I can brag about their comfort.

I have been wearing sketchers with memory foam and I love them. They have so many different styles, from running shoes to slip on's to sandals. I just go online (Amazon is my choice) and search sketchers with memory foam.

If you get Danskos don't get the clog like ones. They are fine for standing but horrible for walking all day..
I would get some Merrels or Mephistos IMO they are the best for walking.

I've had good luck with my allegria Mary James. They are not the prettiest but they have a good footbed. I've had mine 4 years with weekly wear, maybe 2x a week.
Anything by keen is good.
I have a pair of Naot that i wore for a week vacation and they were not as comfortable as I would like. Especially for what I paid.

Not sure they sell Cole Haan in Canada, but I am absolutely in love with my Zerogrand Wrap Slip On Ballet flats. I just walked about 15 miles in one day in Montreal the other day, and my feet felt great after. They are not the cheapest, but they last forever.
They also sell really cute wingtip styles and ballet flats in the Zerogrand line.

When I was teaching I wore a lot of Danskos. Try on several styles, they have a few different styles of foot-beds that feel/fit differently. I can't wear one of them for long, the others I can wear all day and my feet and legs never hurt. Vionics are another brand that I can wear all day, great arch support. Love 'em.

I don't have an advice on specific shoes but a few friends that are on their feet all day swear by changing their shoes half way through the day.

My comfort shoes are Munro. Whenever I can switch out of my heels I have my Munro Mary Janes on at work (like right now).

I love Danskos and Clarks.
I am a music teacher, and I'm active all day - doing dance/movement activities with the kids, moving furniture, going up and down stairs, etc.

I got some shoes today. They feel like butter on my feet. Or like walking on a cloud they are so comfortable. I didn't think shoes could be that comfortable. I am wrong I guess. They feel great! I saw my GP today (for other reasons) and she wants me to wear orthotics, too and hopefully that with these shoes should help.
Thanks for all the recommendations!

Along with the shoe suggestions, consider socks with some level of compression.
