Why is the most common symbol for "I refuse to sink" an anchor? I mean... Makes about as much sense as... ETA: Shouldn't it be something that actually refuses to sink? Kinda like this?

First...I could swear one of those said "I refuse to sTink". Anyway...I never thought about it but that is weird.

I could understand it if there was a line drawn through the anchor but the float one makes no sense at all.

Ha...never really noticed the irony of that, and I have a shirt that says it. I'll never look at it the same way again.

My logical brain has wondered that for a while now. Things like that just make me shake my head.

my daughter and I hate the anchor and the refuse to sink trend, its like having a tattoo of a kite that says 'refuse to fly' or something.. Makes no sense to me. If you need an anchor you WANT it to sink, thats the whole point of an anchor.

Cutting the rope that is attached to the anchor represents letting go of what is holding you back. So the anchor without a rope does not make sense, but an anchor with a cut rope means you have released the weight that is dragging you down. At least, that is the story I have heard.

I've never heard that before, but I'll look out for it now. It makes no sense at all.

Maybe it's symbolic...refusing to give in to the anchor that's weighing you down. Seems kind of a negative way to display that though. Who knows?

The anchor is based on a bible verse - Hebrews 6:19 - that says ...We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.'.
My tattoo is the infinity and anchor, based on the above verse.

So Funny! When I got my only tattoo last month we were talking to the tattoo artist about that exact phrasing with the anchor and he said how much he hates it and that he wants to tell folks to get a rubber ducky rather than an anchor but he can't. My best friend and I reference it all the time when something doesn't quite make sense,
