In the past, I've made mini albums documenting trips. They are usually in a somewhat mixed media format with stitched pages and paint. I doodle, adhere photos, and attach memorabilia from the trip (e.g. maps, hotel keys, napkins from restaurants). They look similar to something like these: meandmyscraps.blogspot.ca/2011/04/travel-album-after-part-1.htmlwww.shopevalicious.com/2011/03/destination-travel-journal.htmlI've been getting all the supplies and printing photos to start working on another one for a recent trip, but I keep wondering if I should do a different kind of album. I've been doing more pocket scrapbooking for the past year (Project Life, December Daily) and am now wondering if maybe I should do the travel album like that, i.e. with page protectors in a fixed size binder. I could see an album in this style (pocket/page protectors) as having a cleaner look and could be potentially faster to put together (I have a lot less time these days). But I also feel that this type of album is missing some texture I like on the other type. And for some reason, lately I've been feeling like the "artsy" scrap album is a little dated - maybe because I haven't seen many made recently? Any thoughts? I don't know why I can't seem to make up my mind!

I don't think the albums you describe are dated and I think you should always do the project the way that you love. But since you mentioned you also like the project life style scrapping, something like this might be a good mixture of both for you: www.inthescrap.com/2015/08/summertime-2015-mini-album.html?m=1You could fill in all your pocket pages then add in memorabilia and artsy inserts amongst the pocket pages.

Personally I prefer page protectors but I think that's mostly because I cannot make the kinds of beautiful albums you have linked.
If you're tossing up between page protectors and not could you do an album that incorporates both? It could be a quick way to get photos and memorabilia into an album but you could focus on a few special photos/events/memorabilia with the more artsy pages. I also think that with pocket pages (if you went that route) you could create mini layouts in each pocket or do a mix of mini layouts with photos.
I've seen people attach things to the outside of page protectors too so there's always that option to make the project a bit more tactile.
ETA - obviously lovestocreate and I think alike!

I agree with Chinagirl828 and lovestocreate that you can incorporate both styles in one album. On my last trip, I took journaling pages from a Sn@p album with me. When I came back, I did my titles, embellished those pages around the journaling, added some pages with memorabilia glued on in more mixed media style, and filled the pocket page protectors with photos and post cards. It was quick, yet fun to do and fun to look at

I think you should do what you love, and are good at.
I also don't think there is such a thing as "dated" when it comes to scrapbooking. It's an art. You do it as it comes to you, and as you love it.
And I also happen to love the artsy look, though I'm no good at it.

I love the albums you linked and you can definitely get that look with pocket protectors. All you need to do to add "chunk" and texture is to add memorabilia directly to the rings instead of putting everything in pocket pages. I love grammadee's suggestion of gluing things outside of the pocket pages and Chinagirl828's idea of switching up pocket pages with your mixed media look. You may want to check out Marcy Penner's series of 2015 albums for Studio Calico (like this one www.youtube.com/watch?v=xINQcMIQZQQ). She has a super clean style, but she incorporates different textures and sizes in one album. I think every month has a youtube and they're really fun to watch! Those albums are delightful because they're so personalized and different! I think you'll like it

Thanks lovestocreate, Chinagirl828, grammadee, LavenderLayoutLady, and ellewood for your input! I was having decision paralysis last night, haha. I'm really liking the look of these hybrid albums, and I think that's probably the way I'll go. That way I can get the best of both. I liked the links you guys posted too, and ellewood, you're right, cute video.
