We went out on the lake yesterday. I bought a Coppertone Sports spray spf 30. I sprayed dd before heading out on the boat. I also sprayed myself. I reapplied multiple times to both of us. Each time I applied it, I made sure I was close to the skin, rubbed it in, and we weren't moving so there was very little wind. So I know it was getting and covering on her skin. The places that I concentrated most got burnt. I say this because as dd pointed out last night that there is a spot on her hands that she said I never really put the sunscreen but the other part I did and is burnt.
It seems that anytime I use the spray stuff, we get burnt. Am I doing it wrong or is it a faulty product compared to the old fashioned lotion style?
I feel so bad for her. She was very uncomfortable last night. I made sure I was reapplying frequently and she still got burnt.

I've always found that the spray kind aren't that effective. We stick to lotion. Ditto that plus I don't think inhaling it is good either. Lotions for us. And remember that sun screen expires. I didn't know that until recently, and I had to throw out a bunch. It's not any good after it expires. No more stocking up for me!

I find it is SO much easier to wear protective clothing than to worry about sunscreen. Long sleeved rash guards for every member of my family at the beach, pool, and lake every time.

Top rated sunscreensI have also heard that sprays are not near as effective as lotions, and have to be applied much more often.

I've heard the spray doesn't work as well. That said we used it on vacation (WDW, the beach) the last two years without any problems. Neutrogena spray, at least 50 spf.
However I wanted to make sure we had something really good as dd is now on a medication that makes her more prone to burning. And the spray stuff didn't work a month ago when she went to a friend's lake house and went out on their kayak. So this year for our beach vacation I checked out Consumer Reports and ended up buying Pure Sun Defense SPF 50 (lotion). It worked great, no burn, we came back just about as pale as when we left lol.

We use a combination of lotion and spray. I can't adequately lotion my own back so I use spray on places I can't reach well. The only sunburn I ever get is when I forget sunscreen altogether. I know lots of people hate the spray but we find it very effective for us.
You may have burned for another reason - the sunscreen was out of date or old, the UV rays were multiplied by the water, your cumulative exposure, any number of reasons. Sunscreen still does let some rays through and that may have been sufficient to get a burn no matter how much you reapplied, if you were in the sun all day.

I use the Coppertone sports spray for my body and a neutragena lotion for my face, neck & ears. Except for spots I missed, I haven't had sunburn in forever and I am very prone to sunburn. I don't rub in the spray and reapply often and it seems to work fine.
I read that vinegar helps relieve sunburn...I hope your daughter feels better.

I would recommend looking at the EWG's sunscreen guide. There are a lot of ingredients that you should avoid. They tell you what to look for and what to avoid, but I like that you can search for products to find the best rated ones. They also have an app that you can use at the store to scan products. I spent quite a bit of time researching the other day and the best rated ones I could find were BAbyganics (was on sale at target) and the honest company (also at target but it is cheaper if you bundle it online, which is what I plan to do since j use some of their other products as well). There were others on the list but those were the two that I could find most easily. The sprays Always rate lower since the particles can get in your lungs. ETA that we have been using equate spray and up and up lotion. I think the equate Spray worked well to protect against sunburn (better than the up and up lotion) but wanted something that was better for us overall and did not contain the harmful ingredients that are to be avoided. I used the BAbyganics at the baseball tournament this weekend and didn't get burned. I also say under a tent for a majority of the time so that helped as well. But I don't have any new freckles or sunburn.

Teenagers won't wear rash guards all the time, and frankly I don't want to when it's eleventy billion degrees outside, either. Rash guards don't do anything for your head/face/neck, either.
It can be hard to find, but there is one that's been really effective for our fair-skinned family. It's Banana Boat Sport in an orange bottle with the pump spray (not aerosol). No one gets burned when we wear it. I also like the Neutrogena Baby zinc-based lotion for our faces. Very effective and doesn't cause any skin problems.
ETA: I actually couldn't find a new bottle of the Banana Boat Sport in any of our local stores last week, so I sent my youngest off to camp this week with the Babyganics spray that was mentioned above. Got rave reviews from some local friends, so fingers crossed. I also sent her with a rashguard, but I'm not fooling myself that it will get much use.

The only sunscreen I can use that I am not allergic to is Coppertone Baby Pure and Simple (pink bottle). It has to be the Pure and Simple, not the other one (the bottles are almost identical), SPF 50. I've never gotten burned when I remember to put it on. Target sells it, but usually I have to search because they don't put it on the end cap with the other sunscreen.
DH likes the sprays because they are easier but even spraying it on the kids gives me a rash.

We have used the sprays for years with no issues but my older DS (an adult), who burns very easily, always uses lotion. I do think that lotion provides better protection.

Funny you mention the Coppertone SPF 30. I used that when I took DS to Thomas Land and even liberally re-applying we both got red. My cousin, who is the sun screen queen, met us there and her husband was complaining she had SPF 100 and it was like putting liquid plastic on his skin. He borrowed my SPF 30.

I would use a higher SPF next time. I always use SPF 50. Especially when I'm out on the water and the UV rays are magnified even more.

I am a big fan of Coppertone Sport. It works great for me-but it doesn't seem to work as well for my mom. I think that it has something to do with body chemistry (for lack of a better way to describe it.) Kind of like how different deodorants work for some people but not others. The funny thing about SPF is that higher doesn't equal better. SPF 45 works just as well as SPF 100. The key is using sunscreen appropriately and when it is, you don't need SPF 100. I am sure that I will get all kinds of responses that I am wrong but if you are using SPF 30/45 then you are fine.

I bought the spray as opposed to the lotion even though the lotion had a better rating (due to the spray factor, I believe). However, it was not an aerosol spray and you do definitely have to rub it in. It blends quickly and was easy to apply, though.

We only use Kinesys sunscreen. It squirts out - not like a lotion but more like a liquid. Then it is so soft and silky that it spreads so evenly all over our skin so easily, with perfect coverage. It is so smooth it's almost like a greasy feel but it isn't at all greesy and you feel dry from it in a matter of seconds. We use it everywhere but on our face. On faces we use a stick. The aveeno type with less chemicals but with a blocker, like zinc. We never burn.
My girls won't use any other type of sunscreen anymore. They love the kinesys.
Paige.

I'm going to go with a preventative that I have a reasonable expectation they will use, even without my direct supervision.)

[ I just sent my dd to camp for a month with 3 rash guards and 3 bikinis. I know the majority of kids wear a bikini but that we're happier with dd in a rash guard. Last year, some of the other kids made fun of her rash guards. She doesn't normally succumb to peer pressure (she's 10) but I told her to do what she wants to do. I've noticed in the pictures she's doing a combo of rash guards and bikinis. I agree that rash guards aren't for everyone in every situation. I won't wear them because I don't like a shirt over a bathing suit top. My dd has just grown up with them and likes them, but once she develops up top I'll be surprised if she wants one. Like me, she'll be uncomfortable with a shirt over her bathing suit top. Luckily there's good sunscreen!

We don't swim that often but are out all day most weekends during baseball tournaments. Wearing more clothing isn't the smartest thing to do in that scenario so sunscreen is a must.
