He is handling this tragedy with honesty, heartfelt emotion, integrity and grace. He is a beacon of truth in a time of media hype and ignorance. He is hurting and his officers are hurting. He and his family have received death threats. I cannot imagine how he is reconciling his need to protect his officers and his family, yet still do his job with a clear head.

I do not envy him his job right now. What a tragic, terrible situation all the way around.

I agree.
And I wish that the protestors/media would look at the stats of what he has done to improve the department, specifically in regards to decreasing brutality/excessive force.

I agree with everything you've said. But does he remind you of an actor? I can't remember the name but he looks so familiar.
I was also thinking as a police chief you can't take a vacation. If anything happens you have to come back home.

I am paraphrasing here...
"We can't let the 1-2% of cops who do bad things define our profession. We have to be willing to separate the employment. The 1-2% should not be able ruin the other 98%. " Chief Brown

The funerals start tomorrow. This is going to be a tough week for Dallas Police Department and the citizens of Dallas.

He has been a voice of hope and calm in a terrible situation. He has every reason to be proud of his department. And they have every reason to be proud of him.

I completely agree. he and your mayor are doing a great job. Kudos
My friend is the mayor of a large (top 25) city in the US.
Whenever I see something like this play out I wonder how she would handle it, and think about what a grave responsibility it is to be a leader of a major US city.

I haven't seen much (intentionally avoiding too much news), but he is the definition of poise, compassion and professionalism. Dallas should be proud. And other cities should learn.

I love how he addressed the protesters. "We are hiring. Get off the protest lines and fill out an application. We will put you in your own neighborhood and give you the support you need to do your job."

I saw some stats today that in 2009 there were something like 147 complaints of excessive force by the Dallas police. After he took over as chief, he fired 70 officers and last year the excessive force complaints were down to 13 - for the entire year. I'm not sure how accurate it was, but I found that to be really impressive as well.

I streamed part of it. His comment about the police being asked to do the job others failed to resolve was on the mark. (I know I phrased that differently)

I'm in agreement as well. I live in a suburb of Dallas but work in Dallas proper and I have been so impressed with Chief Brown throughout this ordeal. I cannot begin to imagine how overwhelmed he must be 24/7 by these events - physically, mentally, and emotionally - and he continues to do a superb job. I know that's part of his position but still, it is commendable.

(I know I phrased that differently) I heard the comments you're talking about and I immediately thought of this board. So many times the Peas have advised someone here to call the police non-emergency line for some pretty trivial things.

I love how he addressed the protesters. "We are hiring. Get off the protest lines and fill out an application. We will put you in your own neighborhood and give you the support you need to do your job." I sobbed when I saw him say this. Giving people a way to help and a way to get in there and be the change. I love it and I hope that many people do take him up on it. I've seen every briefing that they've done on periscope & I've followed him & the police department on twitter and the communiction and professionalism that they've shown throughout this awful time are truly impressive. My prayers will be with the city of Dallas this week & the entire police force as you lay your police officers to rest.

Looking at things from an out-of-state perspective, I would have to agree with you. I have been impressed with everyone in Dallas from the start: The night of the march I saw a lot of diversity in the marchers; they were peaceful, they seemed to have a positive attitude. Maybe the people who taunt the police were there, but they weren't shown on the couple of channels I was watching. Of all the people I saw interviewed that night and in the next few days, none seemed to have a hard core "all police are bad" attitude. Quite the contrary: They were thanking the police for their efforts to protect them when the shooting started. Any leader who can foster an atmosphere that creates that kind of unity deserves a lot of respect.
I bet he will soon be receiving job offers from other areas of the country.
Here is an article about him: www.nbcnews.com/storyline/dallas-police-ambush/dallas-police-chief-david-brown-faces-toughest-challenge-difficult-career-n607266

If anything happens you have to come back home. As SOON as I first saw him, I told my husband that he reminded me of RuPaul! My husband knew RuPaul and agreed. Chief Brown is an incredible guy. He's been through SO much in his personal life, but he still carries on. He's an inspiration.

I was reading a little more about Chief Brown, and I'm even more impressed with what this man has accomplished and overcome. He lost his own partner nearly 30 years ago in an officer shooting, and then only seven weeks after he became the Dallas chief, his own son shot and killed a police officer and a civilian. His son was then shot and killed by the police. Can you even imagine the pain this man has endured? In spite of his own suffering, he has pressed on and made Dallas a better place. God bless him and his family. CNN story on Chief Brown

Does anyone have a link to the entire press conference this morning? I've only been able to find clips.
