Out in the central valley probably a nice little house. In my area, nada. I just ran all the active listings in my town and there are less than 100 single-family homes with the cheapest at $690,000 for a 2BR/1BA home with about 1000 sq feet. That's why DH keeps a box of Kleenex in his car when he is showing property to couples from places like Texas.

State is too broad. 300k in Illinois gets you anything from a very small 2 b 1 b to something approaching a mansion.

I'm in TX. $300,000 would get you a 5 bedroom/5 bath brand new build on a large lot in a very nice gated community. Source: my sister just bought a house and that's what she got. I guess it depends on where in TX b/c in Dallas or the North Dallas burbs this isnt true. We're in DFW.

It depends so much on the area. We just bought a 4 bed 3 bath on an acre of land for just under $300K in UT. But it's in a very rural community. If we had bought the same thing in a slightly larger community, it would have cost $100K more. At least.
We just sold a 5 bed 3 bath on a little over a third of an acre with a pool in TX for just over $300K and it was in the city.

San Diego. A whole lot of nothing. Yep, same in Auckland, New Zealand. Basically NZ$300k would get you a small section in one of the outer suburbs, or a very small apartment. The average price across the city for a 3 bed house is now $895k. In the areas closest to the city centre it's nearly $1.2m.

You can get a decent house here in Nags Head but not ocean front. I was very blessed my grandfather bought land in Nags Head when everyone told him it was a dumb move and good for nothing land.

I think with most states it really depends on where you live. Of course a house in Portland is going to cost more than one in Roseburg. I live in Oregon and wouldn't choose to live anywhere else. I love it here! It takes me about 75 minutes to get to the ocean, and about 75 minutes to get to the ski resort. I can find multiple covered bridges within 30 miles of where I live (Willamette Valley), and I'm only 65 minutes away from the 'big city.'
That being said, I grew up here and other than about 12 years in the Portland/Vancouver area I've always lived in the valley. I do wish that when I was younger I would have moved someplace else, just for the experience. But I've traveled enough to know that this is where I want to spend the rest of my life.

Sure but she asked about state. I worded that wrong, sorry. State is too broad. Even this area of the state is too broad. Neighboring suburbs that share school districts vary widely in this area.

I live in Houston and the real estate market is good here. I live in the burbs and have a 4 bedroom/2.5 bath 2700 ft2 house and I paid less than $250k. It's only 5 years old. $300,000 in downtown Houston (i.e. in the loop) will get you a 1200 ft2 old house that needs major renovations. You MAY be able to find a condo for that price if you are lucky. Thats what's so misleading about these "how much does it cost in your state" articles. Moderate, good shape, houses where my grandparents grew up can cost less than a luxury car, but in the larger cities $300K buys a Victorian fixer-upper or a 1980s 3bedroom row house.

Whenever I see pictures of Pea homes on here, I can't help but assume y'all are millionares but that is just my bias showing as 300k doesn't go very far around here. My 1200 sq foot condo at the edge of the city goes for twice that. It's just stupid. You can't get a 3 bed house in Toronto for less than 750K. That would be a starter home in need of reno. I couldn't afford a $300 K home, so that should make you feel better yeah - that - we have a 18 yr/old mobile home on 4 acres which is worth about $110K (ok - so a good chunk is the land but...). There's NO way we could afford a $150K house never mind a $300K $300K in my zipcode? 5 beds 2.5 baths 3,994 sqft $299,500 - and it's been on the market over a year and they've dropped the price 3 times. Beautiful brick home in a quiet, exclusive neighborhood between Gainesville and Lake City. Many upgrades and updates to this grand 1970s estate. Lots of open areas and light through the many windows. 2.31 acres

I live in mid-Michigan and $300,000 would get you a really nice house in my area. I could never afford a $300,000 home. Good thing my area is affordable. Every time we have these threads, I feel terribly sorry for peas who live in high cost of living areas. I don't know how you do it. I just bought a ranch style fixer upper that was 1150 sq feet with a full finished basement for $105,000. We ended up putting about $8000 into the house to get it ready to move in. It is a nice, middle class home in a safe, middle class, urban neighborhood.

Keep in mind that those of us who live in more expensive/urban areas also probably my make more than someone doing the same job in a smaller town or rural area. It's all relative.

In my town a not so great 3 bedroom house is about $1.4 million. Cheapest house is a $700k condo.
The Central Valley would be totally different though, I would assume you can get a $300k house.
I need to move to the Pacific Northwest where it's expensive but not this bad....

A really really nice house, but our property taxes here are outrageous and you'll pay anywhere from $5000 to $7000 a year for that depending on where it's at.

I know I have real estate on the brain right now since I have been looking at areas to possibly move to. This morning, I was sent a link to this site where they show you what $300,000 will buy in each state. I was really surprised with some of them. A small, older home in Hawaii for just over $300,000? I didn't think that was possible. And in of some of the other states, $300,000 will buy you an amazingly nice big home. In Texas, you get a McMansion! This may make me change my mind on Oregon. I don't know anyone living there, I just liked the area with all the green and waterfalls. I was in Oregon a couple of times as part of a team hired to provide ideas to redo their downtown area. I saw Brookings on the coast and Roseburg inland a bit in that manner. While in Roseburg, we took part of the day to go hiking (well, walking really, it was such a clean, wide path) to a beautiful waterfall area. Deep blue water and ferns growing everywhere. It was so beautiful and peaceful. I saw a brochure in the hotel we were in that talked about the number of accessible waterfalls in that area of the state. I want to hike to all of them. That is what put the idea in my head about moving to Oregon. But seeing how much house you can get in some of the other areas of the USA might just have me changing my mind. All I know for sure is I don't want to live in Southern California anymore. Plus, it is too freaking crowded and expensive. Take a look at this attached link. Are you surprised about what $300,000 will buy in your area? If you could choose any state to live in, and your budget was $300,000 for your home, where would you choose to live? And this is assuming no attachments to any specific area and no employment worries. Pretend you have the freedom to just choose an area to live in without any consideration for a job commute or schools for your kids. You have just retired and can live anywhere. What would appeal to you? www.purewow.com/home/houses-for-sale-300-thousand-dollars?utm_medium=email&utm_source=national&utm_campaign=State_Houses_2016_07_11_b&utm_content=Home_and_Garden_editorialI think that's a common misconception. It depends on where you live. In our area (north of Dallas), $300,000 will buy you a pretty decent house, but certainly not a McMansion. A 2 bedroom + office, 2 bath, 2 car garage, 2,000 s/f house on a tiny lot in my neighborhood averages about $400,000. You aren't going to get anything even close to a McMansion in north DFW for less than $800,000 or more. ETA: My definition of McMansion and the authors definition must be very different. Because the 3,000 s/f house on a small interior lot with 4 bedrooms isn't even close to a McMansion in my mind. That house looks large, but there is virtually no furniture in it. Not that it's not a nice house, but it's no McMansion.

I would choose the beach in a modest beach home anywhere from Maine to Florida. I want to wake up to the sun coming up over the water and fall asleep listening to the waves. I prefer to be on the ocean side if possible, not the bay side. Don't bother clicking on the "11 BEACH HOUSES YOU CAN BUY RIGHT NOW FOR LESS THAN $300,000" in that link. At least for the ones they had in Florida, they were no where NEAR a beach.

It's an important piece of the puzzle. Also willingness to commute is huge. We decided to build 10 mins further south and saved over $100k on the house, go a little further and you get more house for even less. My husband was fine adding what amounted to 5 mins to his commute because it's already less than what we made in Arizona every day. In Tucson, 300K is a pretty solid house, probably 3-4 bedrooms/office/2 1/2 bath and 2 car garage in a good part of town. In NC that similar sized home is going to need a lot of updates/repairs probably.

I live in the cheap side of California...AKA dead smack in the center of Hell. Our house is right around $300,000K and it's a 5/3 with game room, 3,000 square feet. For California standards it's inexpensive to live here but the trade off is you have to live in the ugliest part of the state. Fresno? Lol i live in the CA foothills... My house is valued at $350k. Itwas built (by our own hands in 2004 and is upgrded to the max) a 4 bed/2 bath 2600 sq ft in a golf course community on 1/3 acre. I also live 45 minutes from any shopping other than a crappyoverpriced grocery store. my parents live in 82 miles from me in the SF Bay Area (Fremont to be exact) and their house is worth 1.6 Mil. It was built in 1985 (by my dads own hands) and is a 4 bed/4 bath/den/finished basement 3600 sq ft. It is nothing special. Oak cabinets, small lot. my sister lives in between us. Her house was built in the 50’s and is 3bed/3 bath and valued at $700k. Again, builder grade materials and a small lot.

We are in SW VA. 4 bedroom/3 bath, 17 acres, and a barn. I think if there is an area you are interested in you really need to look at what's available there. You may be surprised.

That link made me LOL! That tiny and old 4 bed, 2 bath Victorian farmhouse would go for around $180,000 tops in my area and it would have to have a decent amount of land and the interior of the house completely updated. IF it was in a desirable area with urban sprawl, I can see it going for $300,000. I would NOT want to live in that area in Ogden, UT.
