I live in Northern California and $300,000 won't buy a condo for that amount let along a house My DD and her DH just sold their condo and are buying a house Appalling what they have to spend to buy a house

I'm in TX. $300,000 would get you a 5 bedroom/5 bath brand new build on a large lot in a very nice gated community. Source: my sister just bought a house and that's what she got. Haha! Not in the part of Texas I live in. That would be 400k and up here.

I have a hard time with generalities by state for home pricing. In most states there is huge variation.
When I was in graduate school a classmate asked our accounting professor where he lived and he answered, "we used to live in {name of town in one of the top high school districts in the country}, but after my youngest finished high school we moved $500,000 west." It was not that big of a move - he went from a 10 minute commute to work to a 20 minute commute.

I live in los angeles. in my zip code alone, no single family home for $300K. a one bed/one bath condo in the crummiest part of the zip code is $299K and it only has a little over 600 sq ft. the cheapest single family home in foreclosure is $739K. the cheapest regular one for sale--$849K.
go into the Valley or Inland areas and you can get easily something for $300K. but then again it's the Valley or the Inland area.

We have 3 bedrooms, 1 bath, about the same amount of sq footage and our house cost a fraction of that.

I think you also need to look at the area...just because the house is $300K doesn't mean it's in a part of the state you would want to move to. In my area of WA you can't find a house in that price range. On my side that is a very very basic house. On a postage stamp lot. And if you find something in that price range, inspect the hell out if it.

I work in Real Estate so I know exactly what it would buy where I live. Having said that, a state is a lot of territory. Comparing Portland, OR to Brookings or Roseburg is apples to oranges

Our next-door neighbors are selling their house, just waiting for the inspection. House is over 2600 s.f., not counting the basement level. 4 bedrooms, 4 baths, 2-car garage, brick front, nicely landscaped, .27 acre lot, built 15 years ago, but newer roof and well maintained. Listing price is $320,000. Kicker is that we are in Illinois, land of super-high property taxes: almost $9000 for a house in this price range.

Nothing decent. Thishouse was listed at 365K so I'm guessing they'd take 340ish for it and they will get it too. I wouldn't want to live anywhere in my town in a house worth under 350K. This is NZ dollars, so 300K NZ is 216K US at the current exchange rate. So glad we bought three years ago. We'd be in the hood now.

In my area of Virginia, it really depends on the town. Compared to a lot of the Peas, it looks like you can get quite a bit of house around here for $300,000. 350k 4 beds 3 full baths 3,760 sq ft 0.48 acres lot 329k5 beds 4 full baths 3,346 sq ft 279k5 beds 3 full baths 2,783 sq ft 1.38 acres lot 300k5 beds 3 full baths 3,380 sq ft 1.91 acres lot

Ugh. This is a big problem in my city at the moment. No one can buy anything for 300,000 in my city. I live in Vancouver BC, the current most expensive city in the world to be in. I could move to the most expensive part of LA or New York and get more for my money at the moment. You need at least 1.8 million to buy a starter home in Vancouver proper at the moment. My parents home, that they bought for 600,000 30 years ago is now worth close to 4 million dollars. I'm not bragging. They don't live in a mansion. DH and I feel lucky to own a home here right now. But off shore buyers have inflated our market so much that we feel sad that our children probably won't ever be able to buy a home close to us. Here, property is so hard to get that people bid on renting properties and the price just goes higher and higher. Our neighbors house just sold for 500,000 above asking price and they negotiated in 18 months rent back for free! I feel like my city is changing. While I like the cosmopolitan vibe here it is changing beyond anyone's control. Our gov't just announced today the go ahead to tax vacant homes as the houses are being bought, aren't being lived in, and entire neighbourhoods that used to be vibrant are changing - schools are closing, professionals are moving to less expensive areas so it is hard to find a doctor, a dentist or even a good teacher. It is really sad . I wish we didn't have to pay so much for property. It doesn't really matter if your house is worth a lot because unless you're moving cities you have to live somewhere here and everything is inflated. For the last 15 years they've been waiting for the bubble to burst. Now they say it will slow but not pop. My 7 year old talks about what kind of job she'll need to live in Vancouver one day but is there really a job that pays that much! Our friends just put their gorgeous and big house (probably 6,000 sq ft) on the market for 8.2 million. Wtf? Who can afford that. It is all offshore money (and many say laundered money but I don't know about that). Sorry - vent over. It just makes me sad .

We're paying just under $200,000 for a two bedroom 1 1/2 bath townhouse about 20 miles north of Boston. Total of 1544 square feet including a garage. How far north? Â We lived just west of Boston and when we moved there in 2009, we had a hard time finding a house to rent in the town we wanted. Â We paid over $3,000 in rent and another $800 in utilities in the winter months. Â But the schools were fabulous! We live in northern VA. Â $300,000 would buy you a house in the iffy part of town, but definitely not the worst part. We're buying on the Lowell/Billerica line.

$300,000 will only get you a teeny older home in some of the Phoenix suburbs, but would get you practically a mansion in some of the other parts of the state.

Of course the one in Colorado shows a mountain tiny house... you can't buy crap in the mountains for the most part... maybe a condo, an old condo....
Colorado is another depends where you live... Downtown is CRAZY expensive.. probably a million for something old, 3 bedrooms, renovated in the 80s.. maybe that is too high but houses are like that downtown...
I live out in the burbs where we are less expensive than other towns surrounding Denver... My friends sold their house in my neighborhood for $305,000. About 3,000 sq. feet., 3 baths, 4 bedrooms. It was a little upgraded with granite countertops, but otherwise pretty much standard. They moved to TX and paid $70,000 cash for their house, even though older, it is nice and no house payment.

I'm on the MD/PA line and 300k would get you a 4br 2.5 bath 3000 sq ft home with a finished yard (deck, pool, etc)

I'm in central Ohio, just outside Columbus. $300k will buy a very nice home in these parts. Our house is 4BR, 2.5BA, 2400sq. ft., and we paid $175k. The cost of living is very reasonable here.

In NC there are plenty of decent sized homes 2500+ sq feet with lots of upgrades available in many cities (Raleigh, Charlotte, etc) for around $300K.

$300,000 would buy a small (1 or 2 bedroom) flat or unit in a less desirable or outer suburb, or a small older house in a country town, or a 1 bedroom apartment in the city. You could also buy a block of land in one of the new outer suburbs.

It totally depends on where you are. In my town it will buy you either an older home on 10 acres or a large new home in the nicest subdivision in town. In Sun Valley, it will buy you 2 bed/2 bath condo. In Boise it will buy you a nice subdivision home around 2800 square feet. Small lot, but will have granite counter tops. Unless you want to live in the North End. Then you get a shack that needs remodeled.

In my part of NC, $300k would probably get you a very nice 4 bedroom on a lot in a nice neighborhood. Or a little smaller home with a lot of land outside of a city.
I'd like to live on Hilton Head Island but that amount would only buy me a decent 1, maybe 2 bedroom condo depending on how far it was from the beach. Off island you can get a house for that in the low country of SC.
