Firstly, does anyone know of any message boards for TMJ people? The ones I'm finding in google search are either for people who aren't in surgery mode or are so old no one's posted in 5 years or so?
Second: As of July 1, a local health care system now has instituted that a general practitioner, pediatrician, family doctor, nurse practiononer - basically any one you see at your clinic, can only prescribe enough narcotic pain meds for 7 days. After 7 days the patient can come back for more, but multiple prescriptions are frowned upon and will be reviewed by administrators. If multiple prescriptions are needed, the GP should be referring to a specialist.
Luckily, I finally have a surgery plan for my TMJ issues and because of that my GP is now willing to manage my chronic pain until I have surgery. And I'm not in the above health system.

I had bad TMJ and what worked for me is getting my teeth built up (like 12 new teeth) where I had ground them down. I don't get nearly the pain in my jaw that I used to. It's quite remarkable. I went from tons of pain meds (narcotic) and Celebrex to next to none. I am not saying that will work for you. So far I have noticed it worked wonders for me.

I'm at the point where I need joint replacements. I've tried the rest of the things that may help others, but because of past surgeries, joint replacement is needed.
Thanks!

Good luck with the joint replacements. I had that surgery almost 20 years ago.

I saw an oral surgeon and tried to get him to operate and he wouldn't. I did Botox shots in the jaw as well. That also didn't work. Celebrex works but I can't take it very often. Luckily now I don't need it like I used to. I hope the surgery helps. I have had this pain for years. I dislocated it once, too. OMG that hurt and it had to be set. I really hope it helps. TMJ pain is awful!

shevy: I'm trying to remember where you live....... We discussed the chronic pain and meds on the other page. I've been dealing with having to go to a pain management doctor for about 2 years or so. My general practitioner said that my Rx was "flagged" and she couldn't renew it, which was STUPID since I see her every 3 months and she knew about my health the most! So, I had to pay $40 each time I saw my pain doctor (who didn't know nearly as much as she knew). It's annoying!
I hope that the surgery brings you some relief. Best wishes to you!

Shevy- I'm so very happy you are on the right track now, with a Doctor willing to help. I so hope the surgery goes well & you are naturally pain free soon.
