He took 4 AP tests this year. APUSH, Chem, Lang and Music Theory. He got a 4 in APUSH, Chem and Lang. Great...I'm thrilled. Those are 3 of the 4 AP courses he took this past school year. He got a 5 in Music Theory. He didn't even take the course. Feel free to brag on your AP exam takers too. (FYI...he took AP Spanish Lang this year...he chose to NOT take the exam because he felt he actually lost knowledge this year in Spanish...his teacher was horrible)

well done - you must be very proud Mine only took one AP test this year - she got a 4 on World History. She got a 4 last year on Geography also.
This coming year she'll have four AP classes - USHistory, Euro Hist, Lang/composition, and Physics

The senior boy got 5's on his AP Calculus and Psychology exams, but only a 3 on his Physics exam. He said he knew going in that the class hadn't been comprehensive enough for him to do well on the test-that historically no one ever did well on the AP exam because the teacher just wasn't good enough to teach the class. He got an A in the class, so it does make you wonder about the disconnect between his class and the test.

I would think it would be difficult to teach kids smarter than you, meaning the teacher.
Congrats to your DS!

Congrats! My DD got a 4 on the US history and a 5 on her calculus! This bring her AP test total to three 5s and one 4! 3 more AP classes for her next year. She'll probably only take 2 of the tests unless they replace one of the teachers.

My dd took a dual credit pre-calc course (which she got an A in, so no AP score but still college credit) and she got a 4 in APUSH.
I'm really proud of her but her counselor really wants to see her take even more AP classes. She's adamant that she wants to limit her AP classes to two per year. She feels that's the right amount to keep a reasonable balance. It's hard to know sometimes whether to push her a little and try to get her to do what the counselor suggests or just leave her to figure it out. Ultimately I let her figure it out.

Even really great students struggle with this exam, so for him to get a 3 should not be too much of a disappointment. Please don't blame the teacher, necessarily. Did he take Mechanics or E&M? You just have to make sure that you find resources for them to challenge themselves, and you use them as a resource to help others! Learning is so social; getting kids like that to help lead is key. SaveSaveYou know, I don't know. This is my kid who is incredibly on the ball and very independent and I have been very hands off with him when it comes to school. I know only physics-makes me sound like a crappy mom, doesn't it? My guess would be which ever is the more common. His school is not very big so they tend to offer the most commonly requested classes. He took the test to see how he would do, our school pays for it for the students who have a passing grade so to him it was a no harm no foul kind of thing. As for the teacher, I asked the same thing when he said he knew he wouldn't do well on the test. He said that the teacher really wasn't very good. Since he tends to be the kid who does really well in school, I was operating under the assumption that he could tell good from bad-but you are right. A hard class with a hard exam might reflect more on the subject than the teacher.

Some brags and a bomb Senior DS had five AP courses this year, got 4's across the board (Calc, etc) except in Government, which he had in the fall, and he got a 2. He's embarrassed, because it's the "easy" one, and only one he reviewed out side of class since it was previous semester. A little humility can be a good thing.

Congratulations to your son on his achievements!
Also, congratulations to ALL students who worked hard during AP classes this year regardless their scores on the final test. The experience alone prepares you for the rigors of college classes, even if you did not receive credit for them; consider them an opportunity to boost your college GPA in a year or two!

Congrats to all!
DD got a 5 in psychology and 4s in calc and physics. Next year she'll have four APs and we're both concerned about the Gov/Econ tests since one class will be in the fall, like anonrefugee's son experienced.

I'm glad some universities are recognizing the difficulty of this test! When I was in high school a couple decades years ago, AP Physics was taught by the varsity baseball coach. All the concepts were presented in terms of baseball & billiards. I made a 3 on the AP exam, but UNC didn't accept the credit (uncertain about now, but the university only gave credit for scores of 4 or 5 on AP exams at the time). Hope your son's university recognizes the hard-earned 3!

I agree with your decision to allow the student to decide her course load. AP courses are difficult & demanding. I applaud your daughter's maturity in recognizing her limits & advocating for a healthy balance for herself. Hope she has a great year!

Those are hard classes! My daughter sets her own high school schedule also - she's one of those kids who want and need a challenge - her lowest grades have always been in the 'easier' classes because she gets bored and doesn't put the effort in. She's planning the 4 this year (her junior year) along with Honours Pre-calc, French 2 and Honours Humanities 2. Next year (senior year) she's planning AP Art History, AP Literature, AP Econ/AP Gov't (semester courses and like a previous poster - my son had trouble with the one taken earlier in the year come exam time), Honours Calculus (I suspect the school will encourage AP for this but she's not confident in maths and I'm fine with her not taking AP), French 3 and Creative Writing 2 - she's still deciding on the final class for senior year.
