Help!
I have two 4x6 photos, one vertical and one horizontal, that I want to lay out on a 12 x 12.
Do you have an idea that you like? Would you mind posting a link to a sketch or a LO for me?
Seems like this should be easy, but it's making me nuts.
Thanks!

Check out the 2 peas Gallery. I just saw LisaDV 's page last night. HERE it is. audreykit 's page HERE has smaller photos but could be adapted to two 4x6's quite nicely. Will look for a few more in some different places.

Could you place the photos in an L formation and then maybe put a title above the horizontal photo. If the title was good size it could almost create a large box shape which you could then design around more easily. Sorry I don't have a sketch this is just an idea that came to me when you asked for ideas...

Thanks, both of you.
I like the L idea, and seeing it made me think that an off center cross might work too.
The part I'm having trouble with, is what to do with the empty space so that the composition will feel balanced. I know the title will help, but I'm always unsure about what to do with the extra space. I usually scrap 3 to 5 photos to a page, so this is a challenge for me. I like the banners on the second page, grammadee.
I'd love to see/hear more ideas if anyone else has some!

While not all photos in these sketches on this Pinterest board are of the orientation of yours, several are. I have attached a page I did a couple of years ago with the photos overlapped a bit. Have fun, and please show us what you come up with! Attachments:

Thanks! There were two on the Pinterest board that jumped right out at me.
One had both photos in a big circle/flower shape. And the other had both photos contained in a smaller frame, offset by a large title, effectively two large rectangular blocks.
Thanks for the inspiration!
ETA: I like how you used the extra space in your own LO, grammadee. I didn't see the attachment the first time I saw your reply.

This sketch could be easily converted. The circle could be stitched or buttons or.....

I like to overlap (or crop) the two vertical photos and put them next to each other. You can even angle them both to get the overlapping to work with what's in your pics. And then put the horizontal pic directly underneath. You can center this design or put it off to one side. Title can go above, below or to one of the sides of the photos aren't centered.
Im looking in my photo bucket acct to see if I had an example to show you of one I've done ...

Ok this isn't what I was talking about above, but would this work? Look at the right page. Two verticals stacked & sub a horizontal on he bottom?

I seem to end up with the same photo combo often...either as a single page or when I do a two page spread and only have 4-5 photos. I like to use the L shape or crop both photos to 4x4 and place them side by side. Often I layer or create borders to size down the open space on the layout. Here are some examples. Ignore how crooked some of these look when photographed...they are straight in real life! Two cropped and side by side Cropped...one smaller and one larger L Shaped L Shaped...obviously 3 pictures, but the same idea would work with 2 This went on to be a two page spread...but you could easily just contain the title into the space above the horizontal photo

That can be an awkward combination. If it's possible I will trim the vertical picture down to 4x4. If not I'll try something like impearia suggested like this. Or the third layout from the top here. You could fill in the top area with embellishments or a title.

Thanks everyone! I'm really learning a lot looking at all your examples! The common thread I'm seeing in a lot of these designs is having a third element on the page, like a big title or a big attention getting embellishment, so that it ends up with a triangle shape that takes your eye around the page and fills in some of that awkward empty space. Another thing I'm seeing used a lot is either a frame of some type or a strong horizontal line on the bottom part of the page, and they seem to ground those 3 main elements well (the 2 pics and the title.) I've bookmarked Citrus Twist and Sketch Savvy for ideas and inspiration. Great suggestions! Pam, #88 was a really good one too! Alissa, your baby is so cute! Is he the little boy in your avatar now? Or does that cutie have a little brother now? Thanks again all

msliz, thank you! Same little boy I had those photos of his baby album on my photobucket account so it made it easy to pull some examples. Also, I misread your request as two vertical and one horizontal photo! Sorry! My examples are probably not very helpful. Oops.

Is this the sketch you saw on Pinterest? I use this design all of the time. I've used this one, too. The smaller square can be patterned paper or photos.

I like sketches, but it is often the way they are developed on a page that really inspires me! And thanks, natlhol for those versatile sketches!

elaynef, I like the examples you posted. They're like off kilter 4-squares. I can handle that. And natlhol, no those two weren't the ones that I saw, but I like them a lot. Great easy designs! I'm glad others are finding this thread helpful too. Thanks everyone!
