I need advice...I've never used UBER. I got the app...I'm ready to use it, but just have a question...once you "order" a driver...does it take a long time for the driver to show up? Sorry to be so lame...I just wondered if you can expect to wait and should call as soon as you can...or just how that might work. Thanks in advance!

I use it regularly. Depending on the part of town is usually how long it takes. I live centrally and I've never waited longer than 6 minutes.
In other words, make sure you're ready to go before you order.

Niiice...thanks. We are flying to Fort Lauderdale and parking for a rental car was $30 per night! We won't use the rental car each day, so...better to go with UBER.

I got an uber home from work one day when my car was in for maintenance. I live in a small city on the outskirts of a big city. I had a car in less than five minutes.

I use it at least once a week and have never waited more than 5 minutes for a driver. I actually put off requesting a driver until I'm absolutely ready to leave my house or else they come before I'm ready!

We use Uber when we travel. Have you stuff ready to go before you order it. It can be anywhere to 5-10 minutes before they get there but you really have no way of knowing! And the Uber guy isn't going to want to wait for you.

When you open the app you can see cars around you that are in service and ready for fares. Then, when your car is accepted you can see how far they are away from you and follow them on gps until they arrive.
Uber is awesome but both Uber & Lyft were ran out of town here in Austin because of some background check regulations. Bummer too because it was so useful!

You can see in the app's map how close cars are to you and how many there are. That can give you an idea of how long it will take. In San Francisco I can get one in under a minute, usually.

We used uber in Ft Lauderdale when we went on a cruise. I'd say we waited about 5 min for the first guy and more like 15 for the second one. But we were at the cruise terminal which can be hard to navigate.

I live in Los Angeles (not downtown, though) and use Uber about 1-2 times a month, mostly to meet DH somewhere for dinner or a school function, and we drive home together. Occasionally I'll Uber to and from a party if DH isn't with me.
My MIL uses uber when she's in town to go from BIL's house to ours, as she doesn't have a car here.
I think the longest I've waited for an Uber is 9 minutes.

I love Uber. I use it way more when we travel than I do at home but have never had a bad experience.
Several parents if my acquaintance will use Uber to get their kids to/from evening and weekend events. I'm not quite ready to do that with my teens!

Does Uber have seating restrictions? Like, could a family of 4 get an Uber ride?
Do any of you have security concerns about Uber? In planning a vacation earlier this year, I wanted to use Uber to get from a hotel to a touristy destination. My dh was opposed because he had heard things that gave him pause.

Bummer too because it was so useful! nicole2112, my dd is using a different rider app in Austin this summer. She was bummed about no Uber and especially bummed about Lyft because she still had some credit left from signing up with them that she wasn't able to use before she left her last city. It's called Fasten. She's used it a few times and has been happy so far, especially because they don't use the surge pricing that Uber uses which makes the expense of a ride more predictable for a starving artist!

I travel with 3 girlfriends and the 4 of us Uber regularly without a problem. I've never had a bad Uber experience and our drivers have ranged from college students to an 80 year old woman in Palm Springs who doesn't drive after dark or 7 PM, whichever comes first. She was a hoot!

4 people can use uber, but 3 of you might have to share the backseat, depending on what the driver drives. You can request Uber XL if you want to be guaranteed a minivan or larger SUV. If you use code ubertjwinaz, you'll get credit on your first ride

UberX vehicles are required to seat 4 passengers although I've gotten in some pretty tiny cars (Nissan Versa is one that comes to mind). If you are worried, you can order an UberXL but those can take longer sometimes.

You can request an SUV if you have a larger group.

longest we waited was in NYC off broadway and there was a lot of traffic. Maybe it took 12 minutes? you can call the driver to see where they are, or see it on a map.

Yes and I use Lyft also. It has never been more 10 mins and is typically more like 6-8. But I check it in advance to get a gauge of how many drivers are available in the area we need. That can vary greatly. My mom and I were using it at 4AM on a weekday a few weeks back. I have never checked it that early. I checked it and their was a driver close and luckily he picked us up. I know a few people that had driven for Uber or Lyft and felt pretty confident we wouldn't have a hard time securing a driver that early. Because being late wasn't a great option we padded in some extra time.
When we go to the airport we always go through the work of parking, shuttle and all that. I wasn't willing to do that with my mom for a short trip. Our rides were about $23-$25 each way. Totally worth it! Curbside service, not having to arrive extra early or take the time and hassle with the shuttle. I am hoping my dh is on board with doing it when we go as a family. It is cheaper than parking. We have paid around $100 easily for parking and that isn't even the most expensive lot.

My DS lives in Philadelphia and uses Uber all of the time. He likes it so much that he thought about becoming a driver with them. Last December, he bought a huge tv and realized it wouldn't fit in his tiny car. He had his roommate with him, so he ordered an Uber XL and when the car arrived, he asked if he could put his tv in with the roommate. The driver laughed and said sure and DS just followed them home in his car. Cheaper than a delivery fee.

I have used Uber and Lyft as a customer quiet a few times. It saved my neck when I couldn't get DS from school last year. Now he has a car and I've become a driver for Lyft. So far, it's a pretty cool gig. Not sure on the profitability yet, but I enjoy meeting people.

I've used Uber in Phoenix and LA. I haven't used it here at home. When you look at the app, you can see how far away the nearest drivers are, so you can look early to judge when you need to request a car. By no means is this scientific, but it will help you gauge the time. secondlife had a great idea about using Uber when your car is out for maintenance - I've been putting off a repair due to transportation.

another Uber user here. And Lyft but not as much. I'm just north of Chicago and it is typically about 2-3 minutes of a wait. But in the city it's more like 10-15 because of traffic.
The regular Uber is good for 4 people. The XL is good for 6. We had a family of 5 with us and with the 3 of us we needed 2 cars. It was still cheaper than the parking downtown!!

The time for a car is going to depend entirely on the number of available drivers logged in. I usually log on 20-30 minutes before I want to leave to see the ETA but then I wait until I'm ready to request the ride.
If you request and you aren't ready (or the ETA is sooner than you'd prefer) you have 5 minutes to cancel before you're charged.
I'm in Chicago and I've never waited more than 5 minutes for a car. The app usually tells me the driver is approaching about a minute after requesting.
