I should find out soon what is going on, but I'm worried. A relative, age 17 was life flighted to a children's hospital. After weight lifting practice for football, he wasn't feeling his arms or legs and was walking funny. The local hospital didn't find anything with numerous tests. He has not started practice where they are tackling each other. He's had 2 other siblings life flighted because of a car accident in the past. That is too much! Any ideas? He is a tough kid, there is something going on!

I could not tell for sure from your post, but it sounds like he wS walking. That is very good. If so, I bet he has pinched or injured a nerve in his neck.
Please keep us updated.

What makes me nervous is I was told quite a few tests were run at the smaller hospital. They also said he had to have oxygen for a while.

ooh, I hope you get some good news soon!! Perhaps if he did pinch a nerve it was one of the main ones that would go through his torso to help work his diaphragm, as well?? (don't remember much of my anatomy, but I seem to recall that there are a number of MAIN nerves closer in, and they branch out farther out your extremities.
prayers and positive thoughts... (((hugs)))

Hopefully it is a pinched nerve and he'll be back to 100% health very soon! Scary though. I hope he is ok!

Was he recently vaccinated? Did it start suddenly or gradually move up his legs?

My son plays hockey and football. Last year his toes and fingers would go numb and then he'd lose feeling. This mainly happened after weightlifting with the football team. They are forced to lift to maxes... so much weight for 15-18 year olds. Like his leg press is almost 700 lb... and he's 16. We (son, dh and I) decided for him not to continue in football this year. The competition to lift as much weight as possible was putting too much stress on his body. He was constantly exhausted, sore, grumpy. And when the numbness started and after consulting a doctor, we decided to turn his focus elsewhere. He's back to normal with no issues.
Prayers for your relative... that is really scary.

When my son was 16, he had a very sudden illness come on that freaked him and his body and lead to a panic attack during which he could not feel his arms or legs, walk, and turned cold and gray. It scared the heck out of me, and I was sure something was very wrong.
My uncle is an ER doc at a big teaching hospital and he told me it is very common for teens to suffer panic attacks when they are injured or suddenly become ill. Hopefully, it was something like that - my son, who is normally a very relaxed, has never had a recurrence.

I hope that is the problem. He's not a kid with a bulky body and has had concussions in the past. I hope he doesn't continue with football.

The latest update is he has been seen by a neurologist and she is going to talk to the doctor over her to make sure he doesn't need anymore tests. He's off oxygen and his legs are still really weak. They are thinking just physical therapy, but don't know the cause.

Guillain-Barrè syndrome springs to mind, he has some of the same symptoms:
They don't really know the cause but current thinking it is the way some bodies react to a recent bacterial or viral illness:
Someone I worked with a few years ago had it happen to her daughter, her daughter was 18 and came into the room to ask her mother something and my colleague at first thought she was kidding around because she was walking funny, then she thought she might be drunk, after she ruled out those two options she rushed her to ED and her daughter was in ICU and ventilated within 24 hrs. Her recovery took about a year, but the last time I saw her (a few years ago now) she was back to normal. It comes on suddenly and often progresses rapidly.

I hope they figure it out soon.
My sister-in-law has Guillain-Barrè, she got it after a bout with mono that had food poisoning on top of it. She has fully recovered.

Rhabdomyolosis is the first thing that came to my mind. It's when the muscle cells break down and can be caused by strenuous exercise. I've seen it in crossfit exercisers as well as young men who lift a lot of weights to get buff, people who were otherwise very healthy. It causes swelling and weakness and can cause major kidney damage if not treated in time.
Sounds like he is getting good care. I hope he recovers soon.

When I was in basic training my legs went numb one evening. I could walk but couldn't feel touch on my legs. Scared the shit out of me. When I woke up the next morning everything was back to normal. I always assumed it was a pinched nerve from all the PT and never ending walking and marching. Never experienced it again.
