So in looking at our plans for the cabinets, the dimensions listed say 38 1/2 from the top to the bottom of our upper cabinets. We are supposed to be getting 42 in uppers. Is this a mistake in their plans or are we reading it wrong? It seems like we may be getting screwed out of 4 inches, but then I wonder if this is the tops and bottoms?

Is the 38.5 an interior dimension?

Is the 38.5 an interior dimension? That's what we wondered, but it doesn't seem so. This is one of the plans that they uploaded

You aren't reading it wrong.
My only question is if the 42 includes any molding at the top, like a top lip?

If you have 8' ceilings then a true 42" cabinet will not work. Adding up all the dimensions, you have approx 95 inches or just shy of 8'

The 3.5 is to account for the trim or moulding at the top. Best to ask your contractor to explain.

Ask the contractor why it's different than what you expect. It could be a simple mistake, someone didn't change standard dimensions to your options- not an attempt to screw you.
That's the reason everyone needs to review, the more eyes the better. It's great you're looking at details.
Since 42" cabinets won't reach the ceiling, look at that clearance dimension too. If you like to display a special object, or decoration, make sure it will fit.

Totally not what you are asking but just my observation from your plans. With the new refrigerators sometimes the cabinet doors above the frig can't open because of the hinges on the top of the fridge. In previous models the top of the fridge was smooth. In my dream kitchen I will probably put open shelving above the fridge so I don't have to deal with the hinges on the fridge. Clear as mud?

The cabinets above our fridge are top-hinged, so it opens up. We lucked out, standard side-hinges wouldn't have worked with our latest fridge.

Definitely don't assume one way or the other. Contact your contractor now and ask a lot of questions.
