My gripe is I have a reusable grocery bag that is insulated. And I frequently bring an ice pack with me so the cold things stay cold (it is summer in Georgia!) You'd think I was asking for the world - can you please put the cold things in this bag? How hard is that? I never thought to use an insulated bag and I walk home with groceries all the time! lol Well I take that back, now that uber pool is super cheap like $3 I've decided to no longer carry heavy groceries home for the 30 min walk. I refuse to get a shopping basket. lol

Honestly, I would consider stopping at customer service to speak to the manager AND return the fruit each and every time it happened from here on out. This. I am one of those managers that you'd be talking to and we actually appreciate feed back like this. Usually we know who needs more coaching or discipline but if customers don't voice their concern upper management (aka my boss) doesn't get behind us to take our coaching further, as in having a formal talk to the cashier, and possible write up so that the bad behaviour stops. You certainly should not have to ask a cashier to do his/her job correctly.

I always scan my own groceries. This way I get it done the way I like it! Me too. I started doing that full time after the second time I got home from Smiths (I love Smiths usually!) and the cashier hadn't bagged something I had purchased. Ticked me off that I had to go back to the store, see someone in customer service to get a replacement item, when it should have been simple to make sure the item made it into my bags after I placed it on the belt.
Now I can bag things how I please, in the way that makes the most sense for how I keep my pantry and household items.

I had a cashier lean over from the next line, grab my bag of apples to scan for her customer and then toss the bag back on the belt where I was checking out! I told my cashier I didn't want them and he offered to go get another bag for me. Seriously, who does that? So rude. How were your apples contaminated? It would have been easier for her to just ask the cashier for the code on the apples which I see them leaning over to each other to do. It wasn't that my apples were "contaminated", it was the tossing them back from an aisle away that irritated me. I don't know why she didn't ask for the code, but she didn't ask anything.

I have never had a cashier/bagger toss my fruits and vegetables, or anything else. That is bizarre!

Good for you, and if it happens again you should definitely say something to management there. Now for something completely off topic….. the OP and others on this thread mentioned that the cashier “copped an attitude”. It seems that the phrase is used differently there to how it is used here. At first I thought that the OP gave the cashier some attitude. Here I would say that I copped an attitude from the cashier. To “cop” something means to get something. A couple of examples: I copped an attitude from the cashier (the cashier gave me attitude) My team copped a flogging on the weekend (my team got beaten) I’m going to cop it from my parents when I get home (I’m going to get into trouble) Don’t you love slang?

Me too! Usually the cashiers are overly cautious with my food and I have to convince them to put more than one or two things in a bag.

You'd think I was asking for the world - can you please put the cold things in this bag? How hard is that? This has happened to me so many times that I finally complained online (Wegmans). It was good for awhile and now almost every time I have to tell them even when the insulated bag is with the cold items.

This is exactly why I use the self service checkouts when available. I hate taking jobs away from people by doing this but what I hate even more is my food being damaged and causing me unnecessary frustration and/or wasting my money because I'm throwing it away. The last time my daughter went to the store for me to get groceries I had the foil tops of some yogurt containers poked open because of the items that were packaged in the same sack as the yogurt. It's much less stressful to just ring things up and bag them up myself. I'm right there with you on that bench. I'm kind of particular about how I want my stuff handled and bagged, and I have ZERO patience for people throwing my stuff around or bagging it carelessly using no common sense. I always use the self checkouts at the regular grocery store. I have serious respect for the cashiers at Costco though. Now those people know how to stack stuff in a cart like master Tetris players! We load the stuff into our own bags (some insulated, some not) once we get to the car.

We buy our fruit at a stand in the summer and there's a huge sign in front of the peaches: PLEASE DON'T SQUEEZE THE FRUIT. They would never throw the Precious!

I hate when they put freshly sliced deli cheese under stuff so it's smushed back together. The worst one was once around Easter I was getting a ham and my other groceries and some eggs and the cashier scans my eggs then does the 8lb ham and puts it on top of the eggs. I didn't even say anything but I opened the bag and removed the ham and checked that the eggs weren't broken and the cashier started yelling at me that if I had a problem I could just bag my own groceries. Yea, I don't shop there any more oh heck no. I would have come unglued!

I was over tired, had two small children and I just moved the ham and left. Stopped shopping there.

I've never said anything to a cashier who didn't handle my produce carefully, but I remember who they are and never go through their line again. I did have someone try to direct me into her line and said "Nope, I don't let Ursula handle my stuff". When asked why I said "She throws everything and puts canned goods on top of fruit". She disappeared shortly thereafter.

I'd like to think I'd have had the calm to stop right there and request a manager at that moment, but I doubt I would.

Me too! Also, I dislike when they bag each item in a separate bag. I appreciate the cleanser going in separately from my fruit. But 10 items needn't require 10 bags

I but a lot of avocados and I want them treated like a bag of chips!! I say something and always put them last on the belt so I can keep my eye on them . Honestly, sometimes the clerks seems surprised like they didn't know that avocados were easy to squish or that most people do not want their raw chicken in a bag with their lettuce!!
