I posted a couple of days ago, I am 99% sure I got a job. A GOOD job, benefits, etc. But crappy hours/schedule. I am very excited for the job, except that part of it.
WELLL meanwhile the place I am just working part time for (25 hours a week or so)... know I am looking and we discussed it and what if I did leave or can I still do some work for them on the side. I was talking to my boss on the phone today just going over some work I am doing from home and she says "Please don't accept the job until you talk to us"
AGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.... I want to stay there, but yeah no benefits..... and only working part time. BUT I know they are getting busier and they really need me or they will have to find someone else. So I am assuming they are going to make me an offer!!!! She wants to see what this new possible job is going to offer and I have a feeling they are going to try to match it.
Plus side is working from home (the majority of the time) is awesome and being able to take off when I need.... Downfall is that the new job is something I am really interested in and benefits are so good. But the hours are REALLY REALLY bad. And it will be harder to be there for my 8 year old.
Ya know for 2 flipping years I couldn't find ANYONE to hire me (well except for the school and that is gone).... Now I am struggling to figure out what to do.
I know I keep posting about this here and I am REALLY sorry.. it's just a place where I can get my thoughts out (I can't on FB because well my now 'boss' is my friend on there.) So please forgive me about all the job posts past and now and future. I just wish the answer will fall in my lap. I HATE to make the wrong decision.

Take tne new job.
If the old job is going to match the new one you know one of two things.. 1) they have been using you and shortchanging you all the time you've worked for them. 2) they may not be able to hold up to the promises if they base their promises on what the new position is offering. They might can match it for 3-6 months but then you may end up with them giving you a pay cut. They need to make their offer based on thier evaluation of your worth and what they can afford to pay.
eta: and if they wait to make thier offer based on the offer of the other company, IF the other company hires someone else does that mean your current company doesn't value you enough to increase your hours, give you a raise/benefits and make it worth your time to stop job hunting?

My husband says when an employee is looking for a new job they are all ready out the door, but that probably won't help you decided what to do.

The only way I would stay at the old job is if they gave u full time hours and if they paid you as much as it would take for you to purchase similar benefits-and get it in writing that they will continue to do so.

Unless the old job can match what the new job is offering, you should not stay. I hope the new job offers you a great salary and you finally are on solid ground with work again. I can imagine that this has been so stressful for you. Fingers crossed that you get an official offer soon!

Just a little FYI Your #1: No they haven't been using me. I know they haven't. They knew I was looking for another job while I took this to do part time. We all agreed on my salary and it is more than fair. They are people that I worked for in the past. They formed this new company this year and it is just now looking good. Neither of us know if they are going to be able to match the new job so if that is the case, they will either have to let me go or I work pt on the side. #2 If they promise they will hold up on their end. These guys are very straight and honest. I have known all 3 of them for 15 years plus, so it isn't like some people I don't know. If they say they can do it, they will be able to (They are all accountants and know their budget) This is why it is difficult.. I know these people and if I stay I know it will work out. But on the other hand the new job (working for the county) is all different. It's a totally different type of job. What if I can't handle that? Yikes. |

Schedule is 3 months nights, 3 months days, weekends and holidays. 12 hours shifts. (it wouldn't be forever though..if I work into another job with the county)

Exactly what voltagain said. I would be annoyed by the fact that they are doing this now, and not long ago. If they valued you long ago, you probably wouldn't be looking. |

My opinion would be go for the new job! If the old job is saying they can match the money why weren't you worth it to them before. If you do stay i think there might be resentment on both sides you because you should have been making more all along and from them becasue you forced their hand.

Well food for thought!! I think at the beginning we were both under the understanding that it would just be until I found a new job and now that it could happen they are thinking now they can't lose me and want to make that offer.

im trying to say this as gently as possible but you are putting the cart before the horse. There is no job offer on the table right now. Once you get an offer from the county and a counter offer from your current company then you can weigh the pros and cons.

Not necessarily....they are still willing to make an offer in either case because they know I can't work pt forever. This was an agreement when we started that I was actively looking for full time. So I have worked pt, and doing more than probably what they thought I was going to be doing and now are realizing they will have to make an offer for me to stay cause now they need me or they will have to train someone new. IF the county doesn't make an offer we are still talking about me going full time but I think they want to see what the county is offering so they know what I am considering. BUT yes I realize that the county may not offer a thing and then I will go back and say, okay, you want me full time? Here's what I want and see what they say. And if it doesn't work out, I go and start applying again knowing they won't keep me. |

What can your current job do about benefits? I agree that you are putting an offer on the table a bit early, but if offers show up you need to weigh salary, schedule and benefits. If your current pt job cannot offer medical and retirement funding, then you need to leave.
I guess you should question your own priorities for both current and future needs.

At this point, as a mom, I would put that as a pro/con on what you want to do and consider strongly how each job will work with that. I don't know if you have a strong spouse/partner and whether that person will step up to the plate. If not, your stress level might greatly increase with the shifting schedule (nights/days/etc)
Plus there really is something to be said about knowing the people that you with and for and liking them versus moving to a totally new environment. But then I've only had two main "career" jobs in 25 years (with a SAHM break in the middle)

He would be able to get her from school, etc. in an emergency if I can't. But this is what goes through in my head: If I had no kids to consider, I would probably change jobs, just to do something different and maybe exciting. Nothing to lose, right? But with an 8 year old dd, is really really whats holding me back. I'm scared I will be working so many hours and what if I am not there when she needs me.. She is close to being really independent, but we would probably have to get before and/or after school care , she is still to little to walk home alone and stay by herself.. that is still a few years away...(my 20 year old is at home but she works and is in school)... So old job is 'perfect' in this case. I can leave if I am at the office. I can take days off for field trips or sickness (cause I do work at home 80% of the time), even full time I will still have those options. (My boss has a dd 8 years old as well, so she gets it and she works like I do, at home, etc.)..... But then I think of the opportunity. I know I just need to wait and see until they show me an offer (or if they don't)..... like I said this is all consuming me right now. |

Having the flexibility now to go on the field trips or be able to drop work at a moment's notice if your DD gets sick at school is a pretty big deal. I would love to have that! If I were in your shoes, I'd be thinking that the timing of the other job just wasn't right. If DD was say, 12 instead of 8, it might be a different story. |

No I haven't moved.. in years and years... not even on the horizon by any means... I'll probably die in this house.. lol
UPDATE
I got the offer!!! It's called a conditional offer. I have to pass TWO more freaking tests... both on my health. One is a physical, which shouldn't be a problem. The other is another psych test and have no idea why it is on my health.. Maybe I misunderstood. But in any case, I am set up to do those in the next two weeks.
I haven't been told yet, the actual pay or benefits, but he told me HR will be contacting me to get all that information.
I am 90% sure I am taking the job. I just can't see how I can turn down the offer if is is what I expect it to be. I mean 2 years of messing around looking for something and to get this job has been one obstacle after another, I am pretty sure I was meant to take it.

I think if the current job can match the pay and benefits I would stay. Your child is only going to be 8 for a short time. Before you know it they will be off to college and you can focus on your career then. Now, having said all that...it's the path I chose, and some days I regret it. I put my career on hold, and now, at 43, I'm finding it hard to find a step-up job,

DH used to. He also had a rotating schedule so every 3 weeks he got 8 days in a row off. He worked nights, so one of his days off was spent sleeping, but he had time to do things he needed. The way their holidays worked was you worked 1 summer and 1 winter holiday and it went in a rotation. One year Thanksgiving, next Christmas, then New Years', then Thanksgiving... |

I have a flexible p-t job and while I could probably use a new challenge, I am staying because I can adjust my schedule for school schedules, work from home if kids are sick, etc. Save |
