In the thread about hats, many mentioned wearing wide brim hats out in the sun. We go to the beach for a few weeks every summer, and I can't find a good wide brim hat to wear. They usually blow right off my head! I haven't found any with a "tie". My husband and daughters wear baseball hats, but I want one with a wider brim as I am out in the sun longer than they are. Does anyone have suggestions on where to buy a wide brim hat with a tie?

This is the one I have. I've worn it to Israel, and Colorado, and at several beaches. I've had it for years and it never seems to look old. REI Sun Hat

Not the most attractive option, but a fishing or sporting goods store should have some with ties. I ordered one from Coolibar and have been very happy with it. I cannot find the one I ordered, it must be sold out, but this is very similar - in fact, I might like it better! sun hat with ties

I found a floppy wide brim straw hat that I liked, then threaded a "cowboy" hat ribbon -- around the brim, then under for a chin strap with a slide bead. Not a good explanation - but think of a kid's cowboy hat with the slide for the under chin adjustment -- that is what I did. It has worked great -- it totally folds for travel, the ribbon is long enough to keep the hat attached to my body if I pull it off my head

I bought this one HAT from Costco back in the sping for $12.99. I have a small head and most hats do not fit me, but this one adjusts on the inside band. I only wear it around the our house/pool. I don't like a stampede string so I usually tuck it into the crown. I figure if it's windy enough for a stampede string, I'm not going to be outside. ETA: It's supposed to be SPF 50 and packable.

Wide brimmed hat with cordI have a sun hat that I love that has a wide brim but not tie. It fits well on my head but has blown off a few times. It is a washable and packable. I love that about it because prior to that I would take a hat with me on a beach vacation and it was like carrying a cake the whole time to keep it from being smashed or ruined. The one above has a tie and some good reviews but isn't the one I have.

My Costco still has a selection of sun hats in stock.

You could just add a tie yourself. You could get a longer scarf or a wide ribbon and just make holes on either side and put it around the front of the hat (like a hatband) and then cut some holes and string it through so you can tie it on. If your saying OCEAN beach then I'd find something that is pretty sturdy in the brim area. It's SO windy (well east coast beach) that brim would be flipped up all the time.

Thank you for this link. Even though I have zillions of baseball caps, and I wear them every single day, I need something to cover my neck. I just ordered two hats. Can't wait to try them!

I hope you really like them. I almost got one with a neck skirt, but right now I have the Highlander and love it. Save

I have a hard time with hats because of my hair <------ But finally broke down and bought THIS HAT FROM TILLEY several years ago. I like it because it comes in sizes, which is great as I need room for the hair. The brim flips up and down, and it packs well. I only wear it when I'm going to be out for hours and hours. It's made its way to Morocco, Cuba, and Spain (as well as local get aways) with me thus far and still looks and wears great! It's a little pricey but I see it holding up for a long time.... Oh and it also has a chin strap which came in handy during a sandstorm in the Western Sahara!

I just spent time at the beach and wore This wide brimmed hat by Sloggers and it worked great! It stayed on my head even without the cord fastened, it was comfortable and breathed well, and I think it looked nice too. I even wore it in the water, it got a little wet when a larger wave came in, but it held up really well.

I also have one their "Palm Springs" hats. The neck tie is really convenient, and if I don't feel need it i just either tuck it up in the crown of the hat, or I leave it out under my hair at the back of my neck. They are really nice hats.

I like this one. And love the price. I am super pale and have to wear a hat when out in the sun.

I agree - you can always add a tie yourself if you find a good hat. That's what I've done a couple of times.

DD got me a cut wide brimmed hat for a trip and the only way I could keep it on my head was to use a couple of hat pins (actually just corsage pins). My hair is too thick and poofy for hats to stay on without help.

I bought the same hat and love it. It goes with me to the beach and Disneyland. Can fold it up and put in a back pack. The stampede string helps me keep it on if I don't feel like wearing it, hangs on my back.

I mostly wear visors if I want to wear a hat in the sun. I just got back from the beach and wore a visor the entire time but sometimes when I feel like I have been in the sun too much I wear an old school fishing hat similar to the hats with the neck coverage like the ones on that website. Mine has a clip on the back so it doesn't fly off on the boat, but I think if you are looking for something that gives you good coverage on your neck and ears, you are going to be really happy with those hats. The double bonus is that they are often a lot lighter weight materials than the average baseball cap so your head doesn't get as hot.
