First of all, holy heck. If you wanna see a bunch of super buff men and women, go watch a triathlon! My friend competed in her second one this morning. I am now totally in awe of her and so proud of her! We've been Tuesday morning cardio buddies for about 6 years, but man...she has inspired me to do MORE! Have you ever competed in one? Were you incredibly proud of yourself when you finished or what?!? And could you barely walk afterwards?

She does! I can't even imagine doing it... I'm in awe. I'm thinking I should send her a congratulatory bouquet of flowers tomorrow...

Very impressive and motivating!
My husband used to run marathons and do really long distance bike rides and has now switched his focus to triathlons. He hasn't done any recently, but has completed some of the shorter distance races, his goal is now an Ironman.
And I agree with you, the people that participate are amazing! Going to the conventions before the races makes me feel like a turtle, everyone is so fit.
eta: DH is very tired after the endurance races. I will always remember after his 2nd full marathon we were in Chicago and wanted to go out and celebrate with him. He chose the restaurant and when we got there they led us over to a complete flight of stairs to take us to our table. His face was priceless!

That's cool - I love watching triathlons. Do you know what distance it was? (There are sprint, Olympic, half iron and ironman)

I started my fitness journey a year ago. Since then, some friends have started doing mini tris, 1/4 tris and 1/2 tris. Not sure if this link works, but here is a short video I made of some friends doing a Sprint tri. It's inspirational to watch everyone being the best version of themselves for sure. link

I did a half ironman two weeks ago. Today I watched three friends do a very challenging half ironman...only one of the three made it to the finish.

Was it in NYC? There was one here today. They cut the running portion short because the heat index was so high - but I think they cut it from 8k to 6k or something - not very much shorter, if you ask me!
After spending half the day working in un-air-conditioned churches, I felt faint standing at the bus stop in full sun. I can't even imagine what those athletes felt like. I hope everyone was safe.

I started doing triathlons 7 years ago - after wanting to try it for many years before that and not having the courage. I have done sprint, Olympic and half ironman distance events. The feeling of accomplishment is amazing and is what keeps me going. I also like staying healthy by working out with an end goal in mind - I would rather train to finish an event than go spend mindless time in the gym. The problem for me, living in Canada, is that the season is so short!

I did my first sprint tri last month. I started running just last year and took swim lessons earlier this year. It was not easy (especially the swim) but I finished. Right now, I'm training for my 2nd half marathon but after that, I'll get back to training for another tri. I don't think I'll ever go beyond the sprint distance because I'm not a strong swimmer and I don't have that much love for swimming. This was something I had been interested in, and a training opportunity came my way so I went for it It was a women's only triathlon training program (age range of participants: 20s - 60s). Many of us were training for our first tri and we had a great time together. It was awesome to have group members cheering for me at the finish.

That's amazing! I'm working up to a half marathon (hopefully next year) but completing a tri is no where on my radar. I'm in awe at people who do them.
