Eat very lean protein. Stay away from fatty foods. Drink a lot of water/low cal poweraid. Tub baths are nice, or a hot tub. Swimming/floating is wonderful. As long is there is a blanket to wrap up in. Riding in a car is exhausting. Sleeping on the bathroom floor is nice except you haul yourself up to use the potty. A cot in the bathroom would be nice. He is going to sleep. A LOT. And get a new dr! Why a cot in the bathroom? And why the bathroom floor? And why the lean food?

Why a cot in the bathroom? And why the bathroom floor? And why the lean food? The digestive system just doesn't work right when you have mono. It is best to ease up on fatty foods. I lost almost thirty pounds and turned a specular shade of orange.

Rest, rest and then some rest. If he tries to do too much too quickly and pushes himself it'll come back to haunt him so take rest and sleep seriously. Yep totally agree. I had mono as a teen. If you don't rest, you can end up much worse off.

My rule of thumb for toothbrushes: get a new one every 3 months no matter what. If you are sick, get a new one 24 hours after starting antibiotics and then again when the antibiotic course is completed. If just plain sick without antibiotics, I get new toothbrushes. We store our toothbrushes separately in their own container (travel thingy) and we each have our own tube of toothpaste so that isn't shared at all. I know that sounds extreme, but, we learned this when my father was dying of cancer and was immuno suppressed because of chemo.
My DD had mono her Senior year. She was away at school and flew home for Christmas, arriving home really sick. She was down and out for the entire Christmas break, but, went back to school after the break and was okay. My DD thought that she had more strength than she did and a couple of times would start an activity (movie, Christmas Eve family party) only to have to leave and go back home to rest. She didn't participate in any after school activities for a couple of weeks - school and homework were about all she had energy for.
Be aggressive with the antibiotics for the first 24 hours, a lot of fluids, and rest, rest, rest is about all you can do.
Oh, I also wash linens, especially bed linens and pjs, when first diagnosed and then 24-48 hours after starting antibiotics.

My dad spent four days in the hospital with mono .... Luckily no orange! She recovered quickly. When I had it, I also recovered quickly....starting a summer job only a week or so later... And no orange for me, either!

Your poor son, I hope he feels better soon. I don't have any advice other than to say I'd be buying new toothbrushes. They're so cheap, I don't really see the point in going to the trouble of disinfecting them.
Slightly off topic..... After years and years of reading threads here and on the old board about "Mono" I finally decided to google what it actually is. Turns out it's what we call it Glandular Fever in Australia - I never realised that Mono is the same thing. You learn something new every day!
(My dad's best mate has the nickname Mono and I always had a chuckle to myself when people here were using his name to describe some icky illness!)

I can't believe we actually i used those things! Of course, we also had to be careful in the basement of the chem lab. Chemical drains were open and ran down the middle of the Galway in the basement!

I googled it eventually a while ago, because I kept thinking "they can't really have different illnesses in USA?" Duh!
