DS is 16. I took him to Dr. today due to a severe sore throat, tonsils covered with white patches. Strep came back negative, bloodwork came back positive for mono.
My kids still go to the pediatrician, but it is a practice with about 8 doctors in it. He saw a newer one today that we've never seen before. She was kind of a bitch and very short with me while I was trying to ask questions. So, I thought I'd come to my pea friends who have experienced this themselves or had kids who have had mono.
I know it is spread through saliva (kissing - yikes -his poor girlfriend is doomed probably!, sharing food/drink, cups, silverware) but I'm wondering about sharing the same bathroom. DD and I use the same as him and he's been gargling and spitting in the sink.
We have now moved down to the other bathroom to share with DH.
I want to disinfect our toothbrushes. Will soaking them in listerine or hydrogen peroxide kill the virus?
Will the dishwasher kill the virus on anything he uses?
What can I use to clean the bathroom and kill the virus (I'm not coming up with anything concrete in my internet search)
I'm just being overly worried because I don't want it to spread through all of us because we have a trip to Disney planned in 2 months!
Any other tips or things to know? Thanks!!!

As far as I remember you couldn't pass it along unless you shared drinks, kissed or shared eating utensils. I'm sure someone will come and correct me if I'm wrong.
When I had mono I just slept all day long. It took about a month for me to feel better. I drank lots of fluids and are a lot of soup. I didn't even have energy to eat regular meals. My mom kept my utensils, drinking cups, and other things that came in contact with my mouth separate from everybody else and she sanitized them between use.

Rest, rest and then some rest. If he tries to do too much too quickly and pushes himself it'll come back to haunt him so take rest and sleep seriously.

My best friend's 10 year old had it last summer. There were restrictions on jumping into their inground pool due to spleen enlargement issues. Also no rough housing/rough sports. Rest Rest Rest! And best place for cheap toothbrushes - Dollar Tree. You can get a 4 pack for $1. Also plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.
Did they send out a strep test, not just the rapid one?
Enlargement of the spleen — The spleen is an organ in the left upper abdomen, just under the diaphragm (figure 1). It becomes enlarged in about half of people with mono. If the spleen becomes enlarged, doctors recommend avoiding contact sports or heavy lifting for a few weeks. This advice is given to avoid the rare complication of splenic rupture that can occur after trauma, but can also happen spontaneously. Symptoms of rupture include sudden, sharp pain in the abdomen. This is a potentially life-threatening complication that requires immediate medical treatment.

Eat very lean protein. Stay away from fatty foods.
Drink a lot of water/low cal poweraid.
Tub baths are nice, or a hot tub. Swimming/floating is wonderful. As long is there is a blanket to wrap up in.
Riding in a car is exhausting. Sleeping on the bathroom floor is nice except you haul yourself up to use the potty. A cot in the bathroom would be nice.
He is going to sleep. A LOT.
And get a new dr!

Rest is important...lots of it. I would just be extra vigilant with his dishes etc (give him a set just for him). Wash them separately too. You can use white vinegar to disinfect also. I'd ask for a follow up appointment too since she was not so nice to you.

Rest and no sports or rough-housing. My son had it when he was 5 and I was pregnant so I was extra vigilant. They think he got it from sitting through a cold parade with lots of snotty noses sitting really close together on a float for an hour. I'm sure there was all kinds of snot and spit flying on that thing. He ran a high fever and slept more than usual but didn't have any other symptoms. My OB just told me to not share drinks and to wash them on the hottest setting on the dishwasher. We replaced everyone's toothbrushes and washed everything we could just in case.

Rest, rest and more rest. My oldest daughter had it at 7 years old and neither of her brothers, nor my husband or I got it. Well.... I couldn't as I had it at 7 myself and that usually makes you immune in the future. My younger son had it at 12 and he is a germ freak so he never shares utensils, cups or anything else fort that matter. No idea where he contracted it. Again, my husband, youngest daughter and other son never caught it. You are probably fairly safe.
He will likely remain tired even fter he is feeling better or should I say he will tire faster. I think everyone reacts differently. My bf in college got it and ended up having to withdraw from that semester as he was that weak. If I recall, my son was up and about in less than 2 weeks. My daughter remained weak for longer and adefinitely slept more than my son ever did. BTW- toss the toothbrushes and buy new. They are cheap and no reason to risk anything.

I had it when I was 16. Make sure they run the long test for strep as I had strep and Mono at the same time. I was so miserable. No one else in my house got Mono (or strep) and neither did my boyfriend. I don't think my mom did anything special besides just keeping everything clean.
Lots of rest, it will be a while before he feels better.

Sleep sleep and more sleep. Really just rest, taking it easy (no strenuous activities), fluids, etc. It takes a couple months to fully recover.

DD had it at 16. She was very sick. The nodules in her neck almost swelled closed. The DR had her breathe for him over the phone so he could hear how air was passing through her throat. She was down and out for about 6 weeks, had home bound teachers to keep up but was too tired to do homework, etc. Slept a lot.
DS had it too at 16. Very different case. No nodule swelling, but severe sore throat. He had a purplish red rash cover his back. It scared me and I had him in the ER quick. He recovered much quicker, about three weeks. He was very tired like DD and slept a lot.

Our DS had it at the same age. Just buy new toothbrushes. I always clean our bathrooms with Clorox wipes.
It's not spread that easily. Just avoid using the same glass or anything where you share saliva.
Rest and lots of fluids. If he doesn't show some improvement in the sore throat after about 3 days, I'd take him back in. It's not unusual to need more than one antibiotic.
No contact sports for at least a month. It's not uncommon to have an inflamed spleen with mono.

I had mono when my daughter was a baby. I was really worried I would expose her and my DH who also had never had it. The doctor (and my DD's pediatrician) said they were already exposed for probably two weeks by that point and there was little we could do about it. We Washed hands often and changed out toothbrushes but that was all. I didn't disinfect the whole house or anything. It was fine and no one else got sick including everyone who helped take care of me at that time.

My brother had it as a baby---as in less than a year old. I don't think we ever figured out how he got it. No one we knew had it and he didn't go to daycare or a babysitter or anything like that.

He had a purplish red rash cover his back. DD had that rash from head to toe - I hadn't known that it was a common symptom of Mono (Glandular Fever) and my mind jumped straight to Meningitis. Never seen a rash like it. |

I got it a couple of years ago for the first time at age 43. My fiance wanted to know who I was kissing. I have no clue where it came from or how I got it. I felt very sick for awhile but never got a sore throat or any of the usual side effects. It took a sharp med student to decide to run my bloodwork for it. I had 2 days where I was so tired I could even finish blow drying my hair but otherwise it wasn't too bad once I got over the initial part of feeling sick. They actually thought I had Hep A at first. My doctor told me to just Google what to do when I had a lot of questions. I did miss the first week of school where I'm a teacher. I went back the second week but was pretty much fine after that.

My DD had it when she was 16. Took her to the dr as she was feeling very run down and fatigued, I was expecting them to say she was anemic. Her sore throat did not come unti a week or 2 later. Just be careful and rest rest rest. I was actually sharing a bottle of water with my DD the day she was diagnosed and never got sick.

I had a 16 credit course load, meaning I had a LOT of classes. No one else around me became infected. I was sick as a dog. It took 5 weeks for tests to come back positive for mono and by that time, I couldn't keep food down. I had fevers at night and that fever cycle was how they diagnosed me before the tests came back. Glands swollen all over my body. No energy. Fun times. |

I had a big case of mono I just remember wanting to be asleep all the time. When my dad had it he passed out in his tomato soup. The point is that your poor ds is likely just going to need uber amounts of zzzzz's. Tmw I would call your advice nurse and ask for mono advice. Since that doctor was lacking in communication call and get proper advice.
You should always change your toothbrush when you're ill or exposed to an infectious disease. Once ds is recovered, change toothbrushes, again.
I'm really sorry this beast has been unleashed. It just has to run it's stupid course.
