Maybe that is the only time they can jog? Maybe they like the heat? Maybe they are trying to lose extra weight? Yeah, I see it too and think how dumb!

I see it too and don't understand it. All I think is that must be the only time to go. I also don't understand people who run on bright, ugly streets when there are beautiful trails near by. But figure they have their reasons....

Some people feel they MUST run/jog everyday - that time could be the only time that works for their schedule. It is not very smart to be doing that but I'm sure they have their reasons.

But figure they have their reasons.... Speaking from a person who was an avid runner for many years....having to get in a car, drive to the trail only to have to get back in the car and drive home after my run was a PITA. I much prefer to just begin my run out of my front door and go. I used to go to the trail regularly, but found it started to make me not want to run...it was only when I decided to just begin my run out my front door that I enjoyed my run. The best was when I moved to my current neighborhood that is only 1 mile from the trail...the best of both worlds now. I can run right out of my front door to the trail & home again with no getting in the car and driving.

Why oh WHY would someone be jogging at 3:00 in the afternoon in the blazing sun (not a cloud in sight) when the temperature is 99 and the "feels like" is 109?? Honestly, I try not to judge people about their personal choices that don't impact me in any way... But, Code Red, so hot you can hardly breathe when out in it, advisories all over the tv and paper, camps forbidden from sending kids out to play, etc. Is jogging THAT important? On my way to the grocery store I saw two people logging, and one walking a dog! I felt like stopping right then and snatching that dog into the coolness of my air conditioned car. Poor thing, I felt sorry for him because he didn't choose to be out there. The people on the other hand, well I think they're just kind of dumb. I used to be one of these dumb people when I was younger....now I just look at them and think they are going to literally become on fire it's been so hot. I took up swimming laps as a form of exercise recently as a result.

I asked someone this the other day. He told me he was going to be running a race in a warmer climate and felt this would help him prepare.
For what it's worth, I don't run on trails or in parks because they scare me. I run alone and feel safer where people can see me.

And it is currently 89 degrees, feels like 97, with 60% humidity here. I plan on running late tonight. Like 8:30-9:00ish. It will still be hot, but so hot.

I used to jog during my lunch break in summer but not on the hottest of hottest days, but I agree with you. I do raise an eyebrow when I see a woman jogging at 10pm at night with headphones on.

Hubby runs 6 miles a day at Noon. He did it in TX for 14 years year round even when it was over 100. He does it here too in the blazing heat (97 today). He does not like running indoors on treadmills no matter what. So, outside on his lunch break it is. He is 53 BTW.

But see at least at that time of night you're out of the sun! 12-3 is still considered the hottest part of the day, but by 9:00 it will have cooled off even a teeny bit with no sun. I'm just always surprised at what I see people doing in the heat. I don't mean people who HAVE to be out there...like the poor guys doing road repair or road construction or delivering mail. I mean those who are doing their activities totally by choice. Dd and I were out the other day down by the river to watch airplanes and catch Pokemon (Gravelly Point, for you locals). This is a spot that is flat with only a few trees by the river. I couldn't believe that there was a day camp full of kids playing soccer or something, right in the field. I hope those counselors were pushing the water.

My neighbor is an ultra marathoner. He was just training for the Badwater Ultra (I think it's 135 miles). It goes through Death Valley. In July, the hottest month of the year. Some of his training was spending lots of time sitting in a sauna.
People choose crazy things! I don't run anywhere near as long or as demanding, but I don't mind running in the heat at all. I won't do more than 3 miles in weather like we're having now though. It was already oppressive at 6:00 this morning.
Now, taking a dog out in this pisses me all kinds of off.

I run when I can. Today it was 5.30am (dark until 7ish here). A woman got killed in broad daylight in Remuera which is arguably the most expensive suburb in New Zealand. I refuse to be fearful. Technically, anything could happen anywhere. I run with headphones. It makes the time go faster to have music. There a million reasons why I run. I use to be an obese zombie. I was on depression and anxiety meds. I run to burn off my crazy. I run to be the best version of myself. I've run in the snow, sleet and blistering sun. It is good for my mental health. If it's hot, I drink more. If it's cold, I wear more. My coach says there is no such thing as bad weather, only soft people.

Well the "hard people" need to leave their dog at home. Or run barefoot on the asphalt and with a full length fur coat. To be fair.

Some people don't get overheated as easily as others. Before my hyst, I could do that, but I'm about 8000 degrees internally now and can't run in that anymore. I can walk it though, with one of those cooling towels.
DH would be one of those puzzling weirdos out running in 99 degree weather, he never seems to get overheated.

My son runs 2 miles every other day. He tries to stay on a schedule and often does it in the afternoon no matter the temp. He isn't trying to lose weight... He is trying to bulk up and lifts the other days usually in the afternoon.,

While I agree about the poor dog, some people really like/prefer to run in the heat of the day. I had a friend who chose to between 3 and 4. He preferred it.

I too think it is crazy- but I always assume they must be training for a race/marathon.It gets hot and humid here and if you know the race you are going to participate in has a high chance of being hot and humid- it is probably a good idea ( !!!!) to do some of your training in similar conditions. I don't run so I don't know- just giving the benefit of the doubt- especially if they look like a runner.

My DH says some student athletes train in the heat to train their bodies to function well in adverse conditions. Competitive advantage.

I wonder does running in extreme heat make you lose more weight? I know you would lose more water but that would have to be replaced but does it use more calories.
