I'm so not about to paint the entire inside of my house. I got a recommendation from a friend of mine, who said she's hired a contractor who does great work and is very reliable.
I need to have my dining room, formal living room, two story foyer, upper hallway and bonus room (with 11' ceilings) painted. He quoted me $1400, and will patch holes and make sure the walls are perfect. He provides primer, tape, rollers, etc., and I'm buying the paint (since I already got some and it's not a big deal.)
Estranged DH, of course, thinks this is WAY too high. He thinks two days, 16 hours, $20 hour is more reasonable, which works out to $320. I think that's totally unrealistic and am fine with $1400. (One of the reasons we're estranged, we can never agree on things.)
What do you think (not about the state of my personal life, just about the cost)?

Last year I hired someone to paint my kitchen/dining room, foyer, guest bath, and a bedroom and it cost me $600, which I thought was a bargain. No way is $320 enough for that amount of work.

You might be able to get someone to do it for $320 but I wouldnt expect quality work.
$1400 is a bit high for my area - but it does depend on square feet. And I also think that 16 hours is not enough time to complete all of that work.
Unless you DH is a contractor and has a clue what painting goes for, hours, etc. I would tell him to pipe down.

The bonus room is 20x20, with high ceilings, and the upper hall has seven doors off of it. It's a lot of cutting in and less rolling, which to me makes it harder. Plus the foyer? Not even.

I think the price sounds about right. We have painters in at the moment, house is about 2600sq feet. Main room is two stories, no baseboards, trim or ceiling (but all closets) $3300CDN plus paint and about 10 days. I think they may be quicker as we are on day 3 and they should be done main floor and stairs tonight.

I think your quote is quite reasonable. I just had most of my interior painted, and that's about in line with our painter's rates, if not less.

I would jump on your quote. We paid way more than that to paint the inside of our 1500+ sq ft townhouse recently...

The part that is throwing the amount off, in my mind, is the amount of paint you will be furnishing. Paint gets pricey, depending on quality. Make sure you are factoring in how much that will cost as well.

We just paid $2500 to have MIL's just under 1000sf house painted to get it ready for market. That included Sherwin Wlliams paint, painting every wall and closet, all ceilings, stripping wallpaper in the kitchen and bathroom before painting, all moldings (windows, door frames, baseboards), and repainting all the exterior shutters (23 of them.) They also fixed some surface cracks in the ceiling. It was worth every penny. Actually, we gave the painter a few items from the estate that we were going to sell because we were so pleased with their work and how quickly they completed the job.
I wouldn't blink twice at your estimate for the specs you outlined.

Prices will vary per area, but I think the estimate is $$$.
When we moved to our current home I hired our painter who had previously painted for us. She painted part of the first floor (master bedroom/bath, foyer, living room, hallway and one of the upstairs bedrooms). She charged $790 which included all the supplies plus paint (Sherwin Williams). She never uses tape for trim, so most of her supplies are the drop-cloths, brushes, rollers & paint.
When we sold a rental home a few years ago she painted most rooms, including closets, plus included supplies & paint for about $800.
Do you have a realtor in your area? Call your realtor & your insurance agent (if local) and ask for referrals. Our painter was highly recommended by both our realtor & insurance agent. I would never hire anyone else! She is meticulous w/her work, never makes a mess or drips paint on my woodwork. Her quotes have always been the best, too.

Yeah well, there's people that think I should shoot their wedding for $20/hour too but that doesn't get to happen. (I'm at about $175/hr) You're paying for more than just labor, you're paying for equipment, insurance, advertising, skill and expertise. Not to mention the years it took for someone to get to that point in their career. CAN you get it cheaper? Sure.

Well that seems pretty cheap to me. Here in New Zealand I paid more than that just to have my sitting room painted! Admittedly it's a big room and I have 2 lots of trim and wooden doors/Windows which also needed doing but painting here is not cheap!

that sounds pretty reasonable for here, too-- I can't remember what we paid, but it involved scaffolding since one room was a volume room-- for all the trim and doorways? I'd pay that amount to make sure it was done to a good quality level. I agree with freebird 's post... "good work ain't cheap" your husband sounds like my BF when he makes some pronouncement like "a loaf of bread should cost 50 cents, not $3.99..." yeah, right! When was the last time you went to the grocery store-- 1958?? lol!! If your husband isn't a painter, then he really doesn't have any idea what it would cost other than some idea that 'in-his-head-it- should-be-cheaper' but he really doesn't KNOW.

The quote price seems reasonable.
And, that said - I learned the value of getting 3 quotes when we had our house fully repainted. I ended up being able to go with the company I trusted the most at the price of the lowest quote. I only got quotes from companies I'd pre-vetted and actually would consider using, didn't want to waste their time, but I was blown away at the variation in pricing. And the other 2 came down to within a few percent of the lowest bid - one cutting his price in almost half. Plus I learned things to watch for and ask the other guys about each time I met with someone.
Maybe getting a couple other quotes would put your mind at ease and end any debate about what a fair price is.

For my area, that might be reasonable if it included the paint. I think that varies widely based on where you live, so you will get a wide range of prices here. We had 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, the entryway and the stairwell painted by a friend who is a painter, and I think we paid $600, which was very, very inexpensive.

For my area - Twin Cities - that is a very reasonable quote.
We were pretty sticker shocked by our quote, but it was a remodel with a lot of work, including scraping ceilings.

I don't what is essentially 5 spaces can be painted in 2 days. And it sounds like the painter will need scaffolding or a ladder to paint some areas, which adds more time to the painting.
I do my own painting and it takes longer than you think. (Military and have repainted rooms more time than I can count.) DH and I have a standing joke that "you just slap some paint on it and you're done." It's never that easy. I wouldn't expect a professional painter to use a lot of tape--just if an area is complicated. I can remember using it in one area of our Boston house where the molding was intricate and it was a tight space. I did tape that just to make the cutting easier.
I saw an ad on TV where Angie's List is now free. I know I paid $6-7 the last time I used them for some powerwashing quotes. I'd get a few more estimates so that you have some basis for comparison.

I just had a lot of my interior painted. It included the foyer, living room, kitchen, dinette, hallways, one door, two small ceiling areas, and three vaulted walls. It cost me $1200.
That quote was by far the cheapest. The next cheapest was $1600.
So the idea of $320 is, frankly, idiotic.

We had our family room, living room, dining room and hallways (about 1500 square feet) painted about five years ago. We supplied the paint. We do have some very high (about 18 feet) vaulted ceilings but the house is one story. He charged us $1800. I figured it was $1 per square foot plus 20% because they were vaulted ceilings. All the furniture and flooring was out as we were getting new flooring so they did not have to worry about splashing paint on the floor.
I go into Homewyse.com to get a ballpark amount and every time it has been much cheaper than the "low price" estimator. It's a place to start to get an estimate.

I think it sounds like a good quote - I would happily pay that.
We had our single storey house painted throughout 4 beds, lounge/dining, family, kitchen, two bathrooms, and garage walls. Walls, ceilings and all doors and window surrounds. This included all materials and paint. Cost us $6800.

We live in NC, have a 2-story foyer with (I think) 20 foot ceilings and were quoted around $350 just for that one room (he supplies the paint)! When we had 6 shutters painted on our 2-story home a few months ago it was $120 (including paint). Maybe we got ripped off, but we didn't feel it was worth the risk of getting on an extension ladder. My husband did the foyer a few years ago (and I'm so thankful he didn't fall off the ladder) but we don't want him to do that again. I think your price is very fair.
ETA: We're planning to repaint our entire house soon and looking at some of these prices, I guess my DH will be saving us tons of money by doing the rest of it (besides the foyer).

Although cost varies by location, we received quotes six times yours from three different companies for interior walls (no trim) in ~5000 sq ft with 10-12 ft ceilings using Sherwin Williams Cashmere paint. Note only one room was quoted less than your husband's estimated total cost (ie small powder room at $300)! Therefore, IMHO your $1400 quote for labor & supplies (eg drop cloths, brushes) seems reasonable, given the number of rooms & time. Best wishes with this project...
