Got another one of *those* calls. I remember peas saying they tell the guy *I have several computers, which one are you calling about?* So I played along and said I have 5 computers in the house, which one are you calling about? He didn't miss a beat. Said I could log on to anyone of them so he could fix the problem. That's when I let him have it about scamming people, yada yada. I was less than lady-like but he got the message. Last time I did that the guy called back 10 times in a row and kept hanging up. Poor DH had no idea what was going on until I told him and then blocked the number.

I haven't had the Microsoft call in a while, but I did get the IRS we're coming to get you if you don't pay us right now call yesterday. I really hate scammers. Sadly they bilk millions upon millions of dollars from unsuspecting people ~ usually the elderly. Makes my heart hurt for the people who are scammed. I would not be against public stoning of people caught scamming like this. But that's just me.

I was in the car today with DD and her GF and got a call from "Sean at PPS". As I answered through Bluetooth, the girls could obviously hear the call. I asked what PPS stood for - Personal Solvency Services. I proceeded to tell Sean I hadn't been solvent in years, and that I never will be again. He got all excited, but I interrupted him to say that nowadays I just sniff solvents, and they make me not care about insolvency, and what was his favourite solvent to sniff? After a couple of minutes of this, he strangely hung up on me... DD is used to me having fun with cold callers, but her GF was speechless!

I had quite a bit of fun with one of the MicroSoft Calling scammers.......
I pretended to play along - really concerned about what he was telling me about my computer, yes, I will help him etc.... We chatted away, so he really thought I was going to do what he said. When it came time to type into the Run box I "suddenly" found I couldn't quite understand his accent, and could he say it again more slowly etc. Eventually he said he would get his colleague to explain ti as he had less of an accent - I ended up speaking to to 3 different guys. At one point I said that I had heard of scammers and how did I know he was one of the good guys? So he tells me that if I do what he said, he will tell me what a special code is inside the computer and only we would know what it is. So I told him that I wouldn't need to go into the computer, I could just tell him the code because my DH made a handy notebook that lives next to the computer and has all our passwords and codes (actually DH is hopeless on the computer) etc etc.
Anyway, after about 20 minutes or so (hey, it was a wet afternoon, I was at a loose end and having fun) he eventually said that he thinks he loves me, and hung up. I really did have fun, and I guess tying up his time like that meant he didn't call someone else who may have truly been vulnerable.

I also sometimes use this website: CounterscriptIt is a script to use yourself with a junk caller - you start asking them questions that do sound quite legitimate, as if you are just being friendly - you even get to ask them what brand of toothpaste they recommend. It often works really well and you can get a long way down the script - that's because they are trained to go by their own script and really don't know how to cope when they are asked to respond to questions themselves. so many seem to instinctively answer and before they know it, they are on the receiving end. I particularly love the last line in the script: "Do you have a problem answering questions to a stranger on the telephone?"

They told me last time they had my IP address already. I just needed to confirm it.
I said "ok", so what is my IP and I'll let you know if you're correct. He didn't like that and hung up.

I just got that call too. I'm in IL. I had just hung up from talking to my step-dad (who lives about 5 blocks away) who was telling me about how the Microsoft scammers called their house like 5 times in a row. Probably 30 minutes after hanging up with him, I get the call! So funny. I just said "I know this is a scam. Never call me again!". They didn't call back (yet).

Haha, I love all your comebacks. I got the call a few months ago and since it was unavailable I knew it was some kind of marketing thing. It was from"microsoft" and started in on the spiel and really excitedly I said "oh no, that's horrible" to his statement that my computer was infected. Dang it, I must have been too excited he hung up right away. Then, last Friday I got the call on my cell at work. I listened to him for a minute then asked how he sleeps at night? He says sleep, no, I'm calling about your windows computer. I said how do you sleep at night trying to rip off people all day long. He said no, it's about your computer. I said I don't have a computer and again asked if he sleeps well. I got tired of asking that, so I said I'm glad you called because I have 21 computers on my desk. He said 21? I said yes, I'm an IT expert maybe you can help with the problem I'm working on. He actually laughed and said "you are a funny lady" I said I was a comedian at night. I got bored and hung up in the middle of him talking. Why I said I have 21 computers I have no idea.

I got that call two nights ago. I went on and on about how late they were calling and how rude she was for waking me up. She hung up on me. It was 9:45. I don't go to bed until 12:30 usually.

One of my friends likes to ask, "how's your Karma?" when the scammer is Indian. He actually got one guy to sigh and say, "Not very good..."

I've been popular lately. Microsoft has been calling me a bunch, I've won numerous cruises (I can not wait!) and if I don't call back in a couple of hours I'm going to jail for taxes. Ooops! Better hide, my time is way up! ETA One of the microsoft calls got fed up with me, cursed and said "because this is a scam" or "I'm trying to rip people off money" (something like that) when I let him go on and then called him on it and question him.

The last time I got one of those calls I interrupted him to say this call is being recorded for quality control purposes, he hung up before I could finish the rest.
I was shopping with my sister a few weeks ago and she started to give her SSN. I shot her a WTF look, she whispers it's the IRS. I grabbed her phone and hung it up, she told me he'd called her before and she'd given her birth date to him. I swear she lives under a rock.
She isn't stupid, I have no idea what she was thinking. So it's not just the elderly that can get scammed.

If you don't happen to be internet savvy (or on it all the time like me) or happen to miss the one news story a year on it, they don't always think about it. I teach a class that helps transition our kids from high school to after graduation. This is one topic I address. Unfortunately this is a special ed class, so it doesn't reach all of our students. I don't know if the other students get it in other classes. I'm glad you were there with your sister.

One of the best courses I took at LSU was a lower level economics class that taught all the *stuff* you need to survive in the outside world. That was almost 50 years ago. I'm sure an updated version would include Internet scams. but they need to teach a course like that to all high school students. Or make a video game with the info.

I got a call from "Microsoft 35" today. (What the heck is Microsoft 35?!?!) He said that the IP address of my computer was sending multiple viruses to their mainstream computer. He sounded quite irritated! I told him, "Hmmmm...that's strange because my computer isn't even plugged in."
For some odd reason, he hung up on me.

I played along a little with the Windows scam guy once. When I mentioned that I knew it was a scam, he said really horrible sexually degrading stuff to me. I'm not a delicate flower by any means but it was really awful! I won't do that again!

SO's uncle messed with an IRS scam caller. They called on Veteran's Day and he explained to them that the US Government isn't open on Veteran's Day, and asked why the scammer was making calls that day. The scammer didn't have a viable answer for that question. I loathe the scammers that go after the elderly grrr.. Save

I especially hate that elderly people are a main target. I always had to tell my grandma not to trust everyone she came across. I did legitimate telemarketing years ago. It was an interesting experience. I really love people so I was good at it but I hated it. I always felt awful when they said that person had died. With some of the stories I am shocked I didn't send THEM money!
I have started an MLM spiel if they try to mess with me. I tell them that I have an opportunity for them to make money. It's kind of funny since I don't do MLMs so talking to them about the shake that can save their lives is hilarious.
